If you fill all the empty space in your freezer with plastic bottles 3/4 full of water, your freezer will run more efficiently, and can keep everything frozen for days, in case the power goes out.

I feel compelled to point out that tanstaafl and others who are using mortality rates from papers around the world are getting bad data.

We all agree the numbers from CCP are totally wrong.

Therefore the mortality rates based on those numbers are wrong.

Why would you assume the mortality rates are correct while the infected and death counts are all agreed to be wrong?

Personally going to assume it’s straight up 15% across the board including healthy
people and act accordingly for my family.

I heard or read somewhere (likely here) that the US military bases in South Korea were preparing to go on lockdown. They may be thinking hard about that in Japan too.

Cant attach pictures for some reason but someone on Twitter believes Nancy Messonier of the CDC sent these texts 2 weeks ago saying

"....It's worse than whats being said on social media and nationwide news. We're trying to prevent panic as that will only make things worse. Please keep that between us. There have already been over 1000 cases in the US. Although on the news....."

Maybe check the Twitter link and see the supposed text for yourselves to get true context. Quite sad but not unexpected if true. I thought she was actually giving good information to the public as opposed to those at WHO. But like with everything else, who knows what is fact from fiction these days.

ETA: Perhaps she was giving as much information as she was technically allowed to in the briefings /statements she made. Some of her words hint at getting us prepared. Obviously not 2 weeks ago if these texts are true but something in my gut telling me she is warning us now. Without coming out and ACTUALLY warning us. IYGWIM

Not an update, just my thoughts.

The CCP has been lying throughout, of that, I have no doubt. As this scenario has unfolded I'm convinced that the WHO and Public Health England have been lying, downplaying and delaying. The media has been selectively reporting as and when under the direction of the powers that be as required (D notices etc).

Is this virus going to kill us all, no, is it going to kill me? Possibly. But because we are not being told the whole truth I have no idea what to truly expect should I get it. I personally believe that it is the disruption that will be caused by so many people becoming ill all roughly at the same time in a ripple effect that will be the issue. Swamping the medical authorities and NHS. Truth is no country has the health care infrastructure to care for the large numbers who will fall ill and those who will need specialist help in addition to the ongoing medical issues seen every day. That's what will cause the breakdown, such as it is.

So with that in mind it's prudent to be prepared. Enough rations for 3 months, water backup should the water cease, means of cooking, heat and a means to defend yourself from desperate people should you have to. We also have a plan should one of us become ill and or we have to self isolate. Will all this come about and will I have to use it? Lets hope not, but if it does happen I am ready. We have a saying in the army, 'Prior preparation and planning prevents piss poor performance'.

I'm optimistic but expect this virus to spread and roll over us as a community, country, and world. It's out there and mixing already. We can't stop it, we cant defend ourselves against it by living like a hermit forever. It's now part of our world. So being prepared it no bad thing. It requires a shift in mindset.

I'm prepared as well as we can be. I'm in the UK military and have made plans for my family to be able to carry on, should they have to.

Worried? No, because I'm prepared, Concerned? Yes but optimistic.

As I mentioned before. It would make military sense to give priority to emergency/first responders (police, medical, fire etc), military, food/water production, medical supplies, power and distribution. Now personnel such as military and police would get priority because they will maintain order and keep everything secure in order to function. Difficult decisions would be made and depending on the situation various powers enacted. But make no mistake, the military and police are expendable and expected to make sacrifice for the greater good if needs be. Medical/health professionals and their facilities would be protected very well, we need those brave people to win. Power, if the power goes off its for one of two reasons, 1. It is being prioritised (for any amount of reasons) 2. We are losing and we are #ed. Food/water production speaks for itself, agriculture, food manufacture, livestock and farming. Any manufacture connected to medicine/med chain. Then the means of and main supply routes for distribution as well as the assets to do it. That would be what is needed as a miminum. Everyone else depends on the system, for everything, to varying degrees as the situation gets better or worse.

I'd imagine rural areas where food is produced would be protected, power facilities, water plants, distribution routes protected. You could only do this with planning, which would involve curfews, containment, cordoning off of areas or areas at certain times. This would be a huge undertaking. Essentially placing the nation on a war footing, closing the country down ecomonically. All that matters is food, water, medicine, power and order whilst the fight for a cure rages on, it burns out or the power goes off and we descend into a Hollywood movie scenario. By which time I'd have buggered off along time ago with enough rounds and rations to get to somewhere far far away in the highlands. By which time it's bollocks to orders I'm my own chain of command.

Well, the 111 services are being used. As for mass deployment, I have seen zero preparedness of any kind nor heard anything from any other location. So I am beginning to have less faith in the system and believe the intention is to allow the virus to roll over us and deal with it that way. But anything could happen. Meanwhile, I go to work as normal, finish my day and go home and there is nothing happening on camp.

Brazil's Health Ministry said a man has tested positive for the coronavirus on in initial test. If it's confirmed in a second test, it will be the first case in South America.

And...

There’s a rumor floating around that an Iranian official who met with the Ayatollah a few days ago has tested positive for the virus.

We assume that based on the idea that there are far more cases that were mild that no one knows about. They presumably survived and there were/are for more of them that cases that got tested out.

Again, since the testing capability is limited, the only ones being tested are those who show up at the hospital for treatment where they need to know what it is. They're already severe cases. Anyone less sick than that is not showing up and hasn't been tested.

I’m sorry, I didn’t see your question. We’re going out of my comfort zone in knowledge. A bunch of this is from a research paper I found.

It looks like it is possible, I don’t think we are there yet technology wise. A bioweapon should have genetic markers that show it was modified, apparently in the future this may not be the case. The soviets had bioweapons that would combine genetic material before being released so it would not be deadly until used.

You could create a bioweapon that could insert genes into a host and modify genetics. We use it in gene therapy treatments. With the best technology you could make a stealth type virus that would be dormant until activated, we should be decades away from that though because we would need to be masters of DNA and able to essentially build a synthetic virus that appeared normal.

With our current genetic technology we should be able to identify a bioweapon very quickly, we did it with the anthrax scare in 2001 and ruled it out as a bioweapon.

The concept of a stealth virus is a cryptic viral infection that covertly enters human cells (genomes) and then remains dormant for an extended time. However, a signal by an external stimulus could later trigger the virus to activate and cause disease. This mechanism, in fact, occurs fairly commonly in nature. For example, many humans carry herpes virus which can activate to cause oral or genital lesions. Similarly, varicella virus will sometimes reactivate in the form of herpes zoster (shingles) in some people who had chicken pox earlier in life. However, the vast majority of viruses do not cause disease. As a biological weapon, a stealth virus could clandestinely infect the genome of a population. Later, the virus could be activated in the targeted population, or a threat of activation could be used as blackmail. Oncogenes are segments of DNA that, when switched on, can initiate wild cellular growth and misbehavior—the hallmarks of cancer. Some viruses have segments of DNA that can mimic oncogenes and directly, or perhaps through bioregulators or host genes, cause cancer. These changes may take years for clinical effect, but the concept may still be considered.

Keep in mind this is a research paper published originally on .gov sites related to the air force, he does have citations and seems to have a good background.

It’s a cool paper, I think people here would like it. I have to check the citations to see how accurate it is but he had a great background. Other great books are anything by Richard Preston or Ken Alibek.

I will look on our university site and PM or post any relevant peer reviewed articles I find about bioweapon genetic markers and those last 3 theorized weapons he mentioned. There are 6 he talked about that are interesting.

I can't seem to find anything specific specific about imports that would effect our food supplies. Mostly talks about electronics and cars and things we don't NEED. Any idea what day-to-day items we may experience shortages of? I've heard of vitamin supplements. What about paper products? What other items?
