The other side of all this that strikes me is the splendour of the Vatican City itself. Of course, it is entirely appropriate that the 'centre' of a
worldwide movement is in grand surroundings. However, I can't help feeling that it verges on Idolatry.
As I say, I'm not religious myself, but I respect values such as love, forgiveness, charity and so on. I don't spend much of my time overly
considering things like the Catholic Church, but I can't help thinking when they're in the news that Jesus himself (if you accept the traditional
interpretation) would be rather taken back by all this splendour. Not least as many Catholics live in poverty within communities direly in need of
