It's sex. There are plenty of ways to dominate or control somebody that don't involve sex, but rapists choose to commit a SEXUAL crime. Why? Has any serial rapist ever turned out to be a successful man who gets plenty of (you know what) in his personal life? Not that I have ever heard. Why not offer sexually deprived men a legal and safe avenue for their appetites?

No I wasn't being sarcastic. I was being offensive. Improving the quality of the pussy being bought so that it can be taxed for more profit deeply offends me as your main concern about this whole issue. Transferring pimp-profit to the tax-collector isn't something I'm fond of as an idea and it is only in the spirit of minimizing harm that I entertain the idea at all.

There are a number of reasons for rape, and I don't disagree that sometimes it is sex. Not always, but it certainly is a large component of it. Yes there are serial rapists and murderers who have been plenty capable of getting laid regularly. Ted Bundy, Paul Bernardo, are two that come to mind off the top of my head. Rapists are not primarily motivated by being unable to get some. They are being motivated by wanting THAT one.

Whoever is selling you this idea that rape occurs primarily because a guy can't secure himself some vagina is lying to you.

I want to address this ongoing mythology that men of the past were beating women into sex regularly.

There is no evidence of this. There is evidence in the last 4000 years of the harsh lives of women living in slave/sub-human castes. Forensic archaeology.

I see this story in these discussions all the time. I have yet to ever see any evidence to suggest that men of the past did this on some sort of regular basis like this piece of fiction suggests. Our closest animal relatives in their tribes (Pan - chimps) do not do this.

Great civil discourse going on here on this topic, stars a-plenty.

I have plenty to say on the morality of prostitution, but some of you have really covered the bases for me.
I'm in the libertarian camp on this one for sure.

Besides people's rights and freedoms, there are so many other reasons it could and should be legal.
I imagine that if it were to suddenly become universally legal there would be communities all over the world which would fight, or otherwise attempt to opt-out of the program, preferring it remain illegal. Rightly so, in my opinion, as I believe communities should have more control and autonomy within their realities.
Anyway, this would create a fractured and spotty map of legal prostitution. As a card carrying medical cannabis patient, I imagine the prostitution movement playing out VERY similarly to the medical cannabis model.
In the following I could substitute 'prostitute' for 'marijuana user/grower/industry professional', and suddenly it's easy to see how this could work.

So what happens is suddenly prostitution is massively decentralized. Everyone is suddenly getting in the game. Average contributors to society are taking up prostitution as a side job or hobby. Some people go big and do what they can to make prostitution their bread and butter or better yet their dream of success. Prostitution is suddenly fresh, local, convenient, honest and productive, and especially in the early years untaxable.

And this kind of hands-off grassroots model seems to also work for things such as local agriculture including raw milk, fresh eggs, produce, meat. It seems to work better for trade workers, landscapers and handymen. Maybe even things like childcare (co-ops), healthcare (doulas, herbalists etc.) and politics (local involvement). It's all more responsible and sustainable

Basically just leave people alone and they'll do it better, more efficiently, with less waste, fraud and abuse.

Spot on.

Sad, that people cannot grasp it though.

Here's an interesting article in regards to WWII and prostitution in Hawaii:
shs.westport.k12.ct.us...
One of the things the paper discusses is how prostitution was illegal in Hawaii, but that didn't stop the soldiers from lining up at the brothels. It also discusses a strike that the prostitutes started. It's an interesting read and I have yet to read the entire paper myself. It takes seconds to download.

Then, there's this article that came out today speaking about how Honolulu is going to be one of the places where the next pandemic is going to originate from.
www.guardian.co.uk...
Is there a link between these two topics? One thing to remember is that war and prostitution have always been bedfellows.

We can roll our eyes all we want about sexual disease, but it exists. As I mentioned earlier, STDs are becoming drug resistent. Just as we're reading about scientists discovering a "cure" or preventative for HIV/AIDS, other sexual diseases are becoming stronger and more deadly.

Most everyone has several chances in their life to get laid, but only one body. Choose wisely and always protect yourself -- from both diseases and those who couldn't care less about you and your health.

If radical feminists were for truly for a "woman's right to choose" they would want prostitution to be legal. They are really a bunch of bull#. Legal prostitution would give the woman full control over her own body.

Wrong. Its just a cheep way of selling your body, at the sake saying its empowering. Its a cheep blindfold. Sex is cheep thrill. Again, Buying a womens "silence", by spreading her legs, for a few dollars, doesnt show me, humanity is moving in the right direction.

I'm a registered Republican, but these days I believe very little in the party. I'm also a spiritual man, but I've abandoned Christianity because so much of it just doesn't make any sense.

There are monogamous species in the world, like Penguins or Eagles, but those species do not have laws, or religions, or morals dictating they are the way they are, they are instinctively that way. Humans are not.

Why do we create restrictions that set us up for failure? Why do we enter into agreements that are almost impossible to abide by, and often lead to destructive ends? Is it Disney movies fault? Religion's fault? Even the Priests can't stick to their vows, and they end up ruining lives because they failed at something they should never have promised in the first place.

Surely we can agree that it would be much healthier for a priest to hire a prostitute instead of molesting an altar boy?

I just don't understand the whole concept of repressing our sexual desires to the point that we will rape and kill over them?

How about a society that punishes people for their crimes? Your solution of offering a legal prostitute to a priest solves absolutely nothing when he LIKES TO HAVE SEX WITH LITTLE BOYS. In fact, your arguments could be used to justify legalising any and all sexual activity regardless of age, species or gender. Those who run the world believe that you are lower than brute beasts, and if they continue teaching you to think of humanity as not capable of any higher thought, you will certainly start to act like one. Sexual perversion and the acceptance of it is a sign of the end of a civilisation. Both secular and Biblical studies will confirm it.

One more thing. Answer the Questions.

Why do you respect the LEGAL Prostitute, and not the Illegal one ?

Do you really think, Men respect the woman, with the title, or without one ?

Sorry am I missing something here ??

Who gives a flying fig tree what the UN wants the world to make legal ? Did I miss something ?

And for all you sex deprived teens , you can still get a prostitute with or with out the UN's world wide law you know .

I say screw UN world issued law on such matters and let the people of there respective countries chose there own laws .

On a side note , governments have a hard time organizing garbage pick up and here we want them to regulate prostitution

Awesome news.

They should legalize all prostituion world wide. Who are you, or anybody for that matter to tell me that I can't have sex for money?

Besides, the human trafficking, drug prostitution and all of that nasty underground crap would cease to exist in most cases because women and men could work out of their own homes, safely and without fear of being thrown in jail.

So all of those stating that sex traffickers would be happy, they would not be. This is the sort of thing that kills their business. No need to deal with criminals when you can just do it legally.

~Tenth

Precisely.

1) We own our bodies, not the Government.
2) Legitimizing the industry destroys the underground economy.

Now think about this in terms of drugs. The Government tries to tell me what I can and cannot do in terms of what chemicals I put into my body, as if they own my body. Legitimizing the drug industry would destroy the underground economy and make all drugs high grade and much safer. I'm allowed to harm my body via the use of alcohol, you don't see hardly any underground alcohol producers, and you don't see people trying to ban alcohol whilst screaming "think of the children". Yet many people do scream that when it comes to other drugs, even drugs which are several times safer than alcohol. Proof the Government consists of totally hypocritical morons.

Obviously it has nothing to do with the subject of the UN, I'm just talking about the subject and logic of legalizing prostitution.

But as for the UN trying to dictate global law, that is completely ridiculous and insane obviously.

I totally hear you and wasn't by any means trying to point you out or pick on you , nor put any words in your mouth.

Personally speaking , and not directed to anyone , but when ever we hear of reports of the wise UN making statements of what they would like to see made law in " your "country , I am of the opinion that they need to be told to bugger off .

Great...legalization of drugs and prostitution are VERY important issues...

Government should not be legislating morality, and telling people what they can and can't do with their own bodies...

Those who speak of the 'detrimental' effects of legalizing drugs and prostitution have clearly never really put any time into actually thinking about the issue...when these things are made illegal, all the very bad things associated with them, beyond one's personal moral opinion about its merit, are massively increased. It goes underground, violence is increased and cannot be curbed because of the inherently illegal nature of the activity, diseases begin to spread, children get involved, etc...the actually BAD things, objectively, are increased, in the name of stopping some subjectively 'immoral' activity...

It's a great idea. We all know what happens when you prohibit certain activities.

People endeavor to do them anyway and the ramifications are huge.
No regulation leads to disease
Courts and prisons become crowded
Local governments lose revenue
These are only a few of the results of underground or black market sales of outlawed product.
Prohibition failed
The war on drugs is an epic failure, and illegal prostitution is a failure.
While prostitution is a disgusting idea to me, it shouldn't matter what my opinion is. The fact is that sex sells and people are going to pay for it no matter what we do. Wouldn't it make more sense to regulate it and at least receive revenues from it? It's a billion dollar industry like Marijuana or alcohol & tobacco.
The more activities we make illegal, the more those activities flourish for private criminals. Remove the criminal element and apply saftey regulations and you have a winner.

Yes, but who do you think is at the top of some of these criminal organizations? I mean, there has to be SOME reason they are turning down all of that taxable revenue... Maybe because they are making tax free profits by running such enterprises. They certainly have the means, motivation and opportunity.

Great for legalizing prostitution as an idea, but NO to the U.N. haven't ANY say-so whatsoever in the matter. The UN should keep its mouth shut about what other countries choose to make legal or not. If you allow them to start forcing legalization of this or that, the next thing they'll be doing is TAKING AWAY things from you. You know what I mean.

and decriminalize the voluntary use of illegal injection drugs in order to combat the HIV epidemic

I've been waiting for the day I could legally inject drugs and hire prostitutes without being called a menace to society . . wait that's not right. I've been waiting for the day I can smoke a joint in peace without the fear of being labeled a junkie.

Don't worry , when the UN takes the right to bare arms away from the US citizen they will want us all to be good and distracted

And what better a distraction then drugs and hookers ?

Plain and simple screw the UN .

To tell the truth I do not think this will solve nothing or much of anything.

It would make it less shadowy and that's about it, and given a few generations it could even be something that is not looked at in a bad light at all. But all in all there are people who would jump at this because that's what they want, and there will be people who will have not choice but to prostitute themselves because of mostly financial reasons. And off-course there will be the pimps, this will only probably just make them change there names to something less conspicuous sounding, and more easier sounding on the ears and acceptable, even something more politically correct.

All in all its a business and it seems females are jumping at the porn and prostitution industry/trade because over all it still is a big money maker. And contrary to popular believe in general women like sex and money, and well a lot of them are exactly about that, and the only thing that is missing out of that is the control. The rest is just dressings, and wording, and in fact I have seen and I am sure many people can see as its not that hard to witness that there are plenty of females who really there is nothing more to them other then control, money, and sex, and there are plenty of dudes who there really is nothing more to them other then sex, and really there in all walks of life and in all social classes.

And it's also a myth that females don't like the dudes who get it on with lots of women even prostitutes, I'v seen enough to know that most of them look for that and even crave that, and get off that. In fact the whole thing seems to be nothing more then a direct exchange of $ for a product...So all in all, it will be pretty much the same old thing...Only the wording will change.

All in all some people just need to realize that they have been living in a illusion the whole time, and that there are plenty of people out there both men and definitely women who paying for sex or prostituting themselves without bothering there conscious at all, and a lot of them it's not about paying for sex or selling themselves for sex that bothers them. But the fact that they have little control in the whole deal, or none at all, in all I think its a control issue and a power issue, that is if they can sell it for there asking price and wont have to deal with the whole criminal element, or the abusing element, basically sell it on there terms. Then they will without a question, and without hesitation.

So again in the end it wont solve much, and it will only lead to other things, and humans being humans it is just a monkey see monkey do thing, letting it become to acceptable will only make it exactly that acceptable. But mostly the more things change the more they will stay the same, and you can not change humans or human nature that easily, but you can change the labels and how they are looked at pretty dam easily.
