Something doesn't make sense to me about this.

Looking on the NOAA sat images of this thing, it is brushing Florida right now, looking up the current weather for Florida says it's got 20mph winds?

How is that possible, if the edge of the storm is hitting it?

I would have expected a lot more weather in the Florida region.

The Sky News video in the breaking news article says the Bahamas has been hit with up to 120mph winds

Irene, a category three storm with winds of up to 120mph (195km) has already caused damage in the Bahamas. Those who choose to ignore the mandatory evacuation order have been asked to place an ID card in their left shoe so they may be identified if necessary.

***Mayor Bloomberg of NYC is live on the weather channel live right now and is requesting people to go find safety and get out of town. they are mulling over a MANDATORY evaq for NYC and will have a decision by tomorrow morning at 8 AM.

Very odd.

Here's the link to Florida's weather page: www.timeanddate.com...

And the NOAA sat page: www.weather.gov...

What will leaving your ID in a pair of shoes in your apartment solve?

Breaking news... Bloomberg evacuating ``zone A`` of NYC... Which is about 270 000 people...

And so the evacuation begins.

Update : Shelters opening by 4PM tomorrow...

Bloomberg asking residents to evacuate now because roads, bridges, and mass transit CANNOT SUPPORT a full scale evacuation.

Transit authority says mass transit cannot run in sustained winds over 39 mph...
Damn... what a weak transit system.

Broad Channel, Midland Beach, and Battery Park City, Conney Island and Manhattan Beach affected for now.

I guess even if someone "calls wolf" on something like this, you can't afford to ignore it.

If I was there - I would be packing my bags and securing everything

Can anyone explain why Florida is experiencing normal weather being brushed by a cat 3 tropical storm?

They're not even predicting much in the way of rain (less than 1mm) over the next few days, yet according to the NOAA satellite images and Irene's predicted path of N/NW, it will entirely cover Florida...i would have though an estimated cat 3 storm would result in higher winds than an expected 31mph and 0.4mm of rain..

I don't get it.

this doesn't make any sense now. there is no indication this storm is or will be powerful enough to cause all this ruckus.

I'm sorry, unless I'm reading it wrong, the potential track area doesn't cover florida.

Not only that, but Florida forecast for the next couple of days is normal weather, yet the NOAA say Irene will be moving N/NW..right over Florida?!

This is why there are little effects in Florida.

And this is where it is heading, note that the red area ,the center of it is the projected path, but it could go to one edge of that or the other. It is big.

It COULD... and that is why they are doing this.

We'll see in the morning what happens... if the hurricane gets weaker or stronger, depending if the eye of the hurricane consolidate or doesn't.

If it does, NYC could be hit by a Cat. 4+ if it doesn't it could be hit by a Cat. 2...

But a Cat.2 hitting NYC is not the same as a Cat.2 hitting Florida... the way NYC is built, a Cat.2 in Florida is like a Cat.3 in NYC...

Anyway, we shall see.

Or let's take the insane conspiracy scenario... and say they are doing this because they are about to hit the Canary Islands with HAARP... which will create a tsunami that will hit the east coast... Yeah that must be it...
