a couple hundred years ago, it was completely normal for 13 year old girls to be married and have children. Today thats considered pedophilia.

It was NOT.

Go look at records about marriages. Anywhere, for the last thousand years that you can dig up.

The ages of marriage for females is consistently over 16, and closer to 21. Males tend to be consistently over 21 to 30 for first marriages.

I know that this "fact" is very popular right now - however, it isn't a fact at all.
Jerry Lee Lewis married his 13yr old cousin in the USA 1/2 way through last century. He was a famous example. I'm sure there were plenty of ordinary folk doing similar we never heard about. Apparently that was legal in his state.

In reality, there were no laws against sex with children in what we now know as "the west" until around the turn of the 19th to 20th century. Paedophilia &, what we now call, child sex abuse (which can be 2 very different things) have been with humanity for ever. Many societies saw nothing wrong with it & some still dont.
There's a whole can of worms in this subject which I honestly dont believe we can discuss without this thread getting locked. Its b/c paedophilia has become the acceptable outlet for unreasoning hatred & there's so much that people are pissed off about that venting spleen is a need. Ho hum.

*Puts on NBC suit to await the inevitable toxic barrage of strawman, ad hom, reductio ad absurdam & false dichotomy arguments*

I can't find it, but somewhere I read that in the early 1800s in South Carolina, laws permitted the marriage of 12 year olds with the consent of the parents. Now these, if I remember correctly, were children as young as 12 years old. The frontier life was harsh and the life expectancy of a commoner was in their 30s or 40s. Remember, these 12 year olds stayed with the parents to help out until they were old enough to make it own their own.

I wish I could find the law that states this.

In Canada a couple of years ago, the law for consent was moved up to the age of 16 from the age of 14. This law has been on the books since 1892. More about it here.

In Islam, a Muslim man can marry a 1 year-old!
Bare Naked Islam

While the most part of Western society considers sexual relations with adolescent and pre-pubescent gilrs or boys taboo, there exists groups of people in thwe world that readily accets this behavior.

What's funny, and I don't mean comical, is that the groups that accept this behavior rejects the Wests way of life.

I am not easily offended after 11 years in the Royal Navy. However, your remark disgusts me. I am a Catholic (although not as good a Catholic as I should be) and I am not a child-molester I assure you.

As the other respondent to your repugnant comment has said "Take your opinion and shove it!"

I hate this Papal Ba****d, the Vatican is full of Paedo's. Good and descent Catholic people (of which i am sure there are many) have had their religion twisted and perverted at every turn. The Catholic religion according to this gang of Paedo's is not what Jesus was teaching. It is now a worship of the Sun........

AlI can say is if anyone supports the Catholic church they are enabling & condoning this person to make such horrendous & and despicable comments. If this was some pleb in the church well then you could say it is not representative of the Church, but this is the leader!

Either leave the church or make it known to the top brass (and shout it out publicly) that this is not acceptable & demand he resign his post otherwise you support this!. you can't sit on your hands on this!. Do what is right & remove this man because he is bringing the catholic church down! He is the leader!

Wow, did anyone bother reading the article?

He's condemning it, by saying the world has become more accepting of it and they, the Church, can no longer be silent while the world continues to get worse.

I'm not remotely Catholic and I can understand what he's talking about.

Thank God. I though I was the only one who got that message.

*Edit: I missed a point and stand corrected.* However, with that being said, the Pope was talking about a theological debate and pointing out its error not its truth or validity as is claimed by limiting the quote of his speech to just that. I would love to see it sourced and correlated to actual Catholic Theology (i.e. Catechism of the Catholic Church etc.). I have never heard Catholic theology say that and if it was said the 'quote' is severely out of context from a limited scope and being applied in a general sense.

It reminds me of the "thing" I found in the constellation Cetus. I have a thread going on this: Here's my point:

I remember some book that had interpreted the Bible awhile back.

The author surmised that the second coming of Christ would occur through Orion's Belt; so you may be onto something here. S&F.

So, I've been saving this for an appropriate time. And it's time:

Cetus The Sea Monster
When Cassiopeia, wife of King Cepheus of Ethiopia, boasted that she was more beautiful than the sea nymphs called the Nereids she set in motion one of the most celebrated stories in mythology, whose characters are commemorated in the sky. In retribution for the insult to the Nereids, the sea god Poseidon sent a monster to ravage the coast of Cepheus’s territory. That monster is represented by the constellation Cetus.

lol this is interesting the pope feels this way about "abuse". The whole semi discourse on "good and evil" he tried nonchalantly slip by was reminiscent of Nazism. Wow that he blatantly says what is in this article, the man who speaks for the church which claims for GOD, and reveals the church's and GOD'S stance on pedophilia, is amazing. WOW especially after the eclipse. Sounds like the 6th seal to me lol.

Wow once again amazing

This is seriously wrong. As quite a few posters have already stated either people have not read the article, they do not comprehend what they are reading or they are being bigots.

What the Pope is saying is that child porn is becoming more prevalent. When something is more prevalent, it becomes accepted and is the 'normal'. The Pope is calling the Church to arms against this.

When we have entire police departments (federal and local) with units formed to combat just this problem, how can we say it is not becoming more prevalent?

Unless the Pope is covering what he really means?

Anyone noticed the small tiny detail of precisely NO PROSECUTIONS of ANYONE from the Catholic church for child abuse?

The church ARE above the law! Whilst that is true they will continue to do this.

By not calling publicly for prosecutions, and in fact protecting those who committed these acts, the Pope is condoning their behavior by default.

The quote is misplaced and again he is refering to a theological debate/discussion that started in the 1970's. You are right, I stand corrected and jumped that quote but he is referencing it as an error not as the truth. The point is he says that is an error of that thinking and that theology.

Harper changed it when he came into office.

Although Canada is a federation, the criminal law (including the definition of the age of consent) is in the exclusive jurisdiction of the federal government, so the age of consent is uniform throughout Canada. Section 151 of the Criminal Code of Canada makes it a crime to touch, for a sexual purpose, any person under the age of 16 years. Section 153 then goes on to prohibit the sexual touching of a person under 18 by a person in three circumstances: if he or she is in a "position of trust or authority" towards the youth, if the youth is in a "relationship of dependency" with him or her, or if the relationship is "exploitative". The term "position of trust or authority" is not defined in the Code but the courts have ruled that parents, teachers, and medical professionals hold a position of trust or authority towards youth they care for or teach. For determining whether or not a relationship is "exploitative", s. 153 (1.2) of the Code provides that a judge can consider how old the youth is, the difference in ages between the partners, how the relationship evolved, and the degree of control or influence that the older partner has over the youth.

I fully understand the context of what he was saying and still think he was wrong.

The Pope has blamed atheists, society...blah blah blah...for the child molestations that Catholic priests have committed. What he has NOT done, is assist in the arrest and conviction of those priests.

I don't care how many times he speaks about how bad society is and how it caused molestations...he is protecting the molesters. That makes him part of the problem, and it makes his words about society merely a game to change the blame over from those who are actually guilty.
