Why...you think a religious leader should say something simply doesn't exist and be nieve about it?

I was in my adolescence in the mid 70s and would have been in Canada at the time.

I really never heard or saw any of this child pornography, I'm kind of floored.

Gross~

I don't even know what to say... What goes around Iguess. So many people look up to him... It's a shame the church couldn't think more of the children.

Asking how abuse exploded within the Church, the Pontiff called on senior clerics “to repair as much as possible the injustices that occurred” and to help victims heal through a better presentation of the Christian message. “We cannot remain silent about the context of these times in which these events have come to light,” he said, citing the growth of child pornography “that seems in some way to be considered more and more normal by society” he said.

Lol @ the people who didn't even read the whole thing, took it out of context and started using it as an excuse to whinge about the Church. So much for denying ignorance.

Pope's child porn 'normal' claim sparks outrage among victims

www.belfasttelegr aph.co.uk

In his traditional Christmas address yesterday to cardinals and officials working in Rome, Pope Benedict XVI also claimed that child pornography was increasingly considered “normal” by society.

“In the 1970s, paedophilia was theorised as something fully in conformity with man and even with children,” the Pope said.

I hate the pope and all he stands for..however and even as recovering victim of this crime, even I can get the context of this post!

Please dont add to the logic distortion dilema by taking it out of context..be angry sure..but for the RIGHT reasons.

He is saying here that SOCETY is effectly regarding it as 'normal' and it IS or has been - through its acceptance of abuse and punishment of victims...though its lack of ACTION on abuse, the sheer prevelence of abuse and more - ITS SILENCE on the issue!

AND THAT is what you need to be angry about.l.that he is shifting the blame to YOU.

The TRUTH is that it was HIS organisation that enforced and allowed that silence and inaction via intimdation and religous programming, it was HIS organisation who stood silent and harboured offenders..and HIS people who did the most harm to the most children all over the world.

He can hardly blame SOCIETY when he is the leader of a large part of that society and his own people have engineered this 'problem' and have been prooven to be the largest offender group than any other group IN society!!

So call him what you will..but be angry for the RIGHT reason - that he is a pot..calling the kettle black..and this post is just more evidence of ANOTHER offender, leader of a group of offenders who are AGAIN twisting the Truth to suit themselves in order to escape ACCOUNTABILITY!

What an ass...no..donkeys are useful..this guy is a lying forked tongued snake.

All the Pope has been doing lately is attempt to give the Catholic church some kind of legitimacy. I grew up a Catholic, was an alter boy and went to Catholic school...frankly the Catholic Church has always been a sham. They are the opposite of Christ's teachings in every way possible, they have not kept his one law, nor any of the Laws of Moses. They have perpetually ransacked other cultures burned books, destroyed art and history, and murdered countless hundreds of thousands, millions really of people throughout the ages. They are possibly the richest organization in the world contrary entirely to Christs teaching. The Pope has no power, does not represent God on earth and frankly is the cause(the office) of more hate and destruction then any other person, or movement in known history. Nothing the pope says makes any impression on me other then counting the days till this charade topples and perhaps all their ridiculous wealth goes to the needy. The biggest example of hypocrisy in history.

Right, because you personally know every single Catholic... Deny ignorance, something which you're obviously overflowing with.

Back on topic:
I'm a Catholic. Or at least one point in time I was considered one. I do know a few, very good priests out there who'd give their lives to help out those in need. But as a Catholic, I feel they're the few and not the norm. So it's pretty disgusting to hear people like "buddha" come out with the ignorant generalizations which quite a few people are too keen on throwing out.

Notice how I said at one point in time, I was considered a Catholic. I doubt people would call me that today. The Catholic church doesn't stand for what I thought it did. It pains me to say it, but the Catholic system is ruined. From the inside out.

The Pope should be making examples of the priests which practice pedophilia. NOT making excuses for them. He should be spreading the wealth the Catholic church has amassed to the poor. I haven't been to church in ages, not because of all of this but because of my own reasons. But this is just making me want to turn my back on Catholicism. I'll never turn my back on my Christian faith, but the church? Another story entirely.

It pains me to say it, it really does. And if any of those good priests which I've mentioned are reading this, I'm sorry. But you're the few, not the many.

Here is a link to the Vatican website that has the Pope's actual speech to the Bishops. Please judge for yourself if what he said was any different than what is reported by this thread. Merry Christmas.

...Well if its a misquote, then the Pope didn't say that child abuse was okay, so what you just said makes no sense..

To be fair if you have a leader of your church condoning certain actions then you either go along with his/her leadership or you admit they are wrong, if they are wrong then what is your 'church' built on? Would GOD allow his/her representative on this planet to condone actions that he/she himself/herself are opposed to? YOu are either a Catholic or your not there isn't a grey area...

Sadie: hi Im a catholic
Dave: so what about your Pope condoning child abuse?
Sadie: Ah well I dont believe that bit!
Dave: Oh so you can pick and chose which bits the Pope says that you believe or agree with?
Sadie: yes he's my GOD
Dave: Is the Pope speaking GOD's word?
Sadie: Not all the time, he's human
Dave: so how do we know what is the word of god and what is the pope's humanity?
Sadie: You know GOD inside you
Dave: So its a personal decision?
Sadie: yes
Dave So Why have a pope?

So the BEST MOST PIOUS MAN in the Catholic Church condones child abuse and we are expected to believe the rest are ok?

please tell me what the difference is?
A child is a child
abuse is abuse
sex is sex

you can couch it in what ever terms you like a child should not be sexually active, if they are something is wrong somewhere along the lines, even two 11yr olds having sex is indicative of child abuse somewhere along the line.

According to Bill Clinton, oral sex is Not having sex. Since he is the Cum all and be all for the democratic party,
this too will soon be learned in schools.
However, in actuality, the Pope states that pedophilia is a perversion. Here is the link.

Well, uh, duh, so I also read it in the same light that you did...but did anyone object to the Khomeini's descriptions of sex with children and animals as vociferously as writers are reacting to a misinterpreation of the pope's statements. Granted, he has difficulty in communication but the reactions here are nothing short of ridiculous!

I am opposed to child sexual abuse as well as physical abuse, abuse through negligence, etc. but the point is that all the changes must come through education, through courts of law, and through law enforcement.

Most child abuse starts at home, with mom, or pop,or uncle,or cousin, etc. and then throughout the neighborhood, to finally strangers...It mustSTOP Immediately but let us face facts, just as none of can fix the world's woes by writing it out in anger as we do here, all we can do is to look for signs and report cases to authorities if we know of it and can prove it. I once did ask two children about it...won't go into details, but that seemed to have opened the can of worms, so I am glad I asked...Don't be afraid to let a child know that you can be there for him as a friend to talk to if he is in need. Children need to know that adults care and will help.

That is just not the least bit true and it confounds me how people just make up things and post them on ATS as if they were facts. I had consentual sex at a very young age with another person of a very young age because sex is a natural thing and humans are drawn towards it. Apparently you never got to play doctor as a kid but many many many many kids do.

Very unusual for a man who measures very carefully his every word.

Never liked this Pope, the last one was ok, but this Emperor Palpatine lookalike gives me the heebie jeebies, in some ways reminding me of a very smart version of the conjoined Cheney-Bush, I realize that sounds very steroetypical and absurd, but that's the best I can desribe it at the moment.
