Town halls gone wild

news.yahoo.com

Screaming constituents, protesters dragged out by the cops, congressmen fearful for their safety — welcome to the new town-hall-style meeting, the once-staid forum that is rapidly turning into a house of horrors for members of Congress.

On the eve of the August recess, members are reporting meetings that have gone terribly awry, marked by angry, sign-carrying mobs and disruptive behavior. In at least one case, a congressman has stopped holding town hall events because the situation has spir

Its seems that the revolt against the government is starting. Congressmen are affraid to meet with the very people they claim to represent.

“I had felt they would be pointless,” Rep. Tim Bishop (D-N.Y.) told POLITICO, referring to his recent decision to suspend the events in his Long Island district. “There is no point in meeting with my constituents and [to] listen to them and have them listen to you if what is basically an unruly mob prevents you from having an intelligent conversation.”

In Bishop’s case, his decision came on the heels of a June 22 event he held in Setauket, N.Y., in which protesters dominated the meeting by shouting criticisms at the congressman for his positions on energy policy, health care and the bailout of the auto industry.

Within an hour of the disruption, police were called in to escort the 59-year-old Democrat — who has held more than 100 town hall meetings since he was elected in 2002 — to his car safely.

Important to note, this is happening to the democrats - the "people's party." I seems that the backlash for big government, the coming higher taxes, the various bailouts is starting to come to a boiling point.

Can you see Marshal Law on the horizon? If these popularly elected politicians are literally affraid for their safety, why wouldn't they agree to impose Marshal Law.

"With all these blessings, what more is necessary to make us a happy and prosperous people? Still one thing more, fellow citizens -- a wise and frugal government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, which shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government, and this is necessary to close the circle of our felicities."
-- Thomas Jefferson

"Suppose your were an idiot and suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself."
-- Mark Twain

Lets see where this takes us. I think it is going to get ugly -- and quick.

s/f great post

Nice to see that not everyone buys the government line and bends over to every whim and fancy the government imposes.

Rookies, they are doing it wrong! The proper way to hold a town meeting is to pre-screen everyone to make sure you only get the ones who agree with you. Just look at how the President does it. Works great for him

More than 400 protesters marched down College Avenue on Wednesday afternoon with one message for Congress: Keep government's hands out of the health-care system.

Carrying banners assailing President Barack Obama's health-care plan and chanting "'Nobama,' no way," the marchers rallied on the east side of College Avenue, then marched through Old Town to confront Democratic Rep. Betsy Markey's staff about her views on a health-care reform bill being debated in Congress.

Honestly, 400 people is nothing!
There were way more people morning Michael Jackson's death
There will be way more people wanting to see meagon fox's new horror movie
There will be way more people going to see the new G.I. Joe movie

Thinking of it that way, 400 is absolutely nothing!

You might think that it is not much, but there are millions that protest with their vote.

It's interesting to me that this is happening in a Democrat district. Something is underway in America despite the mainstream media's lack of reporting it. The American people aren't stupid and I think that come November 2010, Pelosi, Frank, Obama, and the gang are going to be very, very, unpleasently surprised.

That's too passive to be considered a protest
People need to be educated, maybe even go door to door

Too many only listen to the news and believe whatever they say

larger real active protesting needs to be done
but not with large signs, but going door to door

Great video! Look at these anarchists as the WAIVE THE FLAG and recite the PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE!!! Wow these are dangerous people, especially the elderly gentleman holding the flag. These are real yahoos!!!

I hope my sarcasm came through. Seriously though, these are regular Americans who are getting fed up. The Democratic Party has been hijacked by left wing communists. It’s a shame that the Republicans have right wing nut jobs too. There is no longer a political party that actually reflects the ideology of the vast majority of us. All these politicians have gone to the fringe - left or right.

This is going to make 2010 election something really interesting. I have a feeling that the faces on C-Span are going to be very different come 2011 and even more different in 2012! The sleeping masses are starting to understand what they are loosing and they ain't real happy about it. The 400 that showed up are the tip of the iceberg. Don't kid yourself. One hell of a lot more feel exactly the same way and will make their voices heard in the voting booth!

Well this will add more fuel to the fire, and the happy bill passing congress will be pushing more anti home grown terrorist bills on the American citizens.

Remember people by homeland definition we are the enemy.

I think its bait to get all the "real" freedom fighters to rise up, then with the NLE 09 still taking place you could round up all those potential "terrorists" coming out to stand against their tyrannical government.

I could be wrong though and maybe people are starting to get it so is this our chance for real change?

Marshall law got promoted. He also married and took his wifes name: It's General Opression now.

I know, i am the last one who should throw stones in this respect, but this is one you see so often and it also makes me chuckle every time I do

If they would stop hiding what they are doing and actually have an "intelligent conversation" with the people's they represent, they wouldn't be showing up and protesting now would they.

I think someone needs to fill them in on exactly who they represent and if they are fearful of those they represent; well then maybe there is a reason for that! Not holding a town hall because a bunch of people have gathered to force you to listen to them isn't going to change anything. Well other than making people more angry because they aren't being listened to even when they YELL.

The persons in congress need to get back to listening to the people they represent and not the ones who can pay them the most money for their so called campaigns. They where elected to listen to the people and when they don't well we have all seen what happens. They get madder and madder and soon enough they are protesting. It should be a wake up call and not a cowards call of grace out of the situation. Simply sitting down and "listening" to what they have to say would go allot farther than shutting them out! But hey that looks to be the flavor of the decade now doesn't it.

If Obama can sit down with people and have a beer, surely a congress person can sit down at a decent lunch brunch or dinner and talk things out in a rational way. People just want to be heard and counted in the equation the way they used to be. It isn't a stretch to accept this and put the linens on the table for a nice meeting to hash things out.

Operation EMBARRASS YOUR CONGRESSMAN

www.operationembarrassyourcongressman.com...

Operation EMBARRASS YOUR CONGRESSMAN has officially started. The timing is perfect, coinciding with the August recess. This weekend, hundreds of Senators and Representatives will be slithering out of Washington, D.C., trying to sneak quietly back into their districts. They'll pretend they've been hard at work "doing the peoples' business" when in fact all they've been up to is destroying our way of life, piling up mountains of debt that will take generations to pay back, and enslaving the common man to his government.

If you've "had it up to here" and beyond, it's time for action. Be a part of Operation EMBARRASS YOUR CONGRESSMAN. The Mission: "To expose the arrogance, ignorance, and insolence of our elected representatives." We want to do this on a LARGE SCALE - NATIONWIDE! These arrogant, ignorant, and insolent people have embarrassed America, trampled the Constitution, and ignored their constituents for far too long.

Join the operation (it's free and costs nothing). How? Read the Mission, then The Battle Plan. Familiarize yourself with our (or your own) intelligent, issues-based questions and then go attend public events held or sponsored by your representatives. Follow the outlined procedures (boldly but respectfully) and roll tape! Send the video and audio here. We want this site to be a clearinghouse of examples of their arrogance, ignorance, and insolence. Spread the word! Expose these people and point your fellow citizen-voters to this site so they can view the posted examples of how badly we are being served by our elected representatives. It's not too late. We can make a difference!

I blame Bush for that. People got so fed up with his administration that they voted who ever was different from Bush - not republican - even if that person is a left wing looney (insert Obama here).
