So I ask you the same question I asked Onslaught2996, do you think that Maher should have shown some respect to those vets and just left it alone?

Michele Bachmann, photo ops, the shutdown etc are side issues. The main issue is that Maher was very disrespectful and offensive. Would you call WWII vets stupid or do you respect them?

The man is a attention whore who insulted men who answered the call.

Yes they answered the call and it was called a draft. If you didn't show up you went to jail. Some call.

Yet they still went.

Bachman is worse than Bill. But the Vets should be left out of it.

Some/many folks don't. Others seem to think he is a progressive messiah and fawn over everything he says. I don't agree with his show getting axed when he called Bush Jr on his BS. Just wish he would do the same with some of the new administration based BS as well.

ETA - Clearly that's never going to happen.

Bill is a progressive piece of filth. He is weak in every way and form. He is the kinda man that would offer up his pride and everything else if the SHTF. His is the definition of a paper rear end.

I usually add the saying I am sure his father is proud but I bet the mans parents are just as weak and pathetic as he is. Apples do not fall far from the tree. It is time middle of the road liberals take back there party from these progressive Nazi scum.

I bet this scum bag if he had lived during ww2 would be making jokes and helping out the enemy. He is a traitor in a very real way............Progressive filth.

Actually, I'm a big fan of Mauer....but I have to say this was not his finest moment.

It may seem silly to a man that hasn't fought in war, but it means a lot to those that have. We should honor that as they have honored us with their lives.

Believe it or nor so am/was I. He has a laser wit and is brutal when debating issues. Also really liked his movie "Religulous."

But as you say, not his finest moment.

My grandfather was a WWII vet and this comment makes my blood boil.

I wish he would spew his vitriol at the people who really deserve it - the folks responsible for the shutdown who are being ridiculously stupid and petty here.

“And then I love this — they posed for pictures with Michele Bachmann, who showed up.
Michele Bachmann — one of the people most responsible for shutting the f^^king thing down.

If that true, then it sounds like he's actually right.

Might not be politically correct to say it though... but thats truth for ya.

You might want to check your facts... Or were you speaking from emotion ?
When the war started, not everyone was eager to serve. Many had to be drafted. And others objected to war in any form. Some of these objectors came to their beliefs on their own; others were members of several Christian denominations that are known as the historic peace churches. These include the Quakers, Mennonites, Church of the Brethren and Seventh Day Adventists. In York County, Nebraska, Henderson is a predominantly Mennonite community.

The question was what to do with these objectors when the country was fighting for its future survival. During the Civil War, Quakers pressured Congress to allow members of the peace churches to perform alternate service, usually acting as medics who would care for wounded soldiers but not fight themselves.

The World War I draft law recognized the peace churches, but prosecuted anyone else who objected on the basis of their own beliefs. Five hundred objectors were court-martialed – 17 received death sentences for refusing to fight. Although none of death sentences was carried out, almost 150 objectors were jailed for life, and others were harassed and beaten.

Finally, in World War II, the draft law exempted from military service those who "by reason of religious training and belief" opposed war. The objectors still served. They were assigned to "work of national importance." This service fell into two types:

Some C.O.s served in the military in "noncombatant" roles. They were medics who were in the Army but didn't carry a gun.

Some who objected to being connected to the military in anyway served on the home front. Several 10s of thousands were trained and fought forest fires, built conservation projects in rural areas, or took care of the mentally ill in hospitals.

There were C.O.s who refused to even register for the draft, believing that the draft itself was supporting the killing. About 6,000 of those men did go to jail. They went to jail because they refused to register....

Due to the efforts of many C.O.s who worked in mental health hospitals started a reform movement which sprang up to improve the hospitals and develop community-based alternatives to the horrible conditions they saw.. I actually knew a preacher who was a C.O. during WWll and he worked during the war.

My father was in Patton's Army until the end and Joe the C.O. served in his own way.... and never went to jail except the jail he created in his own mind in his later life. WWll was not an easy gig to be a C.O. because of pier pressure... for there were many who believed that Germany and Hitler was an honest threat to the rest of the world and sooner or later America; so fight them over there or in your back yard later..

When these vets choose to take political actions like they did forcing their way onto the site then they are open to criticism. Just because these people did something in the past doesn't give them a free pass.

Well he is right. The greed of the baby boomers ....

Well he is wrong. And so are you.
Those who fought in WWII ... 'the Greatest Generation' ... are NOT BABY BOOMERS.
Those born after WWII and before 1965 are 'BABY BOOMERS'.
Born between 1946 and 1964.

The guy is just a jerk. A well paid, famous, jerk.

I was talking about draft dodgers not people who didn't sign up. Not conscientious objectors.

All colorful language aside the thread was basically calling Bill Mayer to task for an obsene statement. That it is also a method of the propaganda media arm of the government is also true.

FWIW I don't recall anything coming out of his blathering even way back except it was GW Bush / Republicans fault almost exclusively with some generic shots at the pols once and a while. And that's fine. He can be a political hack if he want's it's a (somewhat) free country. This last statement he made was over the line though.

he's on 1 hour a week on a pay cable channel, and he's a comedian, who criticizes both sides, but mostly the right. rush Limbaugh is on thousands of radio stations all over the country for 3 hours each day, 5 days a week, bashing anything that is democrat, liberal, or Obama. when you take that idiot Limbaugh off the air, I might listen to what you say, otherwise all I hear is..."liberals are bad, blah, blah, blah"...

It is obvious to most outside America that..........

There are more Fanatical self-indulging nut-jobs 'inside' America than there are in the Middle East, Africa, etc etc........ Most of them wear Republican or Tea party bb caps and put their trust in god although many believe the Earth is only a couple of thousand years old.......?

Anyone insulting the wartime generation is at best dumb and at worst morally corrupt and with regard to the baby boomer generation....... They are the biggest parasites of global history so far......

Right, I feel better now that's off my chest....

Cheers

I already hated this douche bag....Now I guess I loath him.

The most ridiculous thing about him is that he thinks he is funny....

Pompous privileged deputant.....Like he has a freaking clue as to what "everyday " life is like.

And so his audience is the very people he supposedly mocks in his little routine ....the power elite.

So we have a millionaire playboy scum bag preaching to his friends that he doesn't even like about how dumb the common people are.

As if being a "progressive " ..ahem...fascist ....was a golden ticket to walk the fence between asshole and scumbag with a sense of humor.

please.

I can't say that there are too many groups that should be off limits when it comes to comedy, in fact none should be at all, but common sense and common decency should tell anyone that WWII vets are off limits, especially when it involves a war memorial.

Very poor show indeed.

Limbaugh really isn't the topic of the thread here, it's Bill Maher and his latest eruption of vitriol. If Limbaugh were to give the exact same speech as Maher I'd call him out as well. But then we both know Limbaugh wouldn't have disrespected them like this.

People really need to end this hero worship of soldiers...past or present.

I can respect the acts they did, doesn't mean I have to respect the person themselves or every single decision they make.

Many soldiers, past and present, are just complete idiots and are illogical, as displayed by these WWII vets posing for pictures with those responsible for closing the memorial.

You fought in a war, I respect that, but that doesn't mean I have to worship you and give you a pass on everything idiotic thing you do. Vet or not, if you do something stupid, you should be called on it.
