This is what happens when your government doesnt take adequate measures to prevent companies ignoring thier civic responsibility . Firms should not be allowed to discriminate against people who are not already happily employed elsewhere.

We don't need more big government intervention on this. Why should a firm hire someone who's been out of touch with their profession for months or years, versus someone who's kept themselves up to date and either employed or volunteered their services while unemployed?

What you do with your time while on unemployment is a HUGE reflection of what sort of person you are.

This is not about a company's civic responsibility - it's about an individual's civic responsibility and great opportunity to get involved with their community rather than sitting on their behind while the rest of us pay their bills with our tax dollars. If they don't take advantage of lending their skills to a worthy cause, then why should an employer consider them?

We need LESS government regulation, not more.

Well done for this comment. About time someone else said the truth. If your out of work for months and years then you are not worth much to a company. companies have the right to pick and choose and why would they pick someone no-one else wants.

Keep GOVERNMENT out of the job making decisions. I am perfectly happy with the way it is. I also do not want to work beside some second rate employee. I want to work next to someone who is a challenge to my job, who can bring out the best in me. Someone like myself would be best. And that means someone who has been constantly employed in a decent industry. There are too many people who value themselves far too high and apply for job they think they are worthy of.

My attitude my be a bit harsh but I do not care. Nice people dont just come last they are unemployed.

What about those who raised a family and have not worked, so closed minded that's why I if I ever become HR for any company, the only applicants I will consider will be female mothers wiith LONG gaps between their working because they were raising their families' children!!! Everyone else will go into the garbage bin along with your attitude!!!!

Let me go into more detail on this I worked all the time off and on, My eldest child, my son has ADHD and I couldn't keep a decent sitter cause he'd drive them nuts, family watched them until they moved out of state, leaving me bouncing them around from sitter to sitter who would quit cause they could not handle him, the girls were fine, but he was off the wall and meds made it worse. No Job would only give me hours during schooltime only, therefore I had to work off the books when money was needed for anything that I could find. Then in 2006 that same son had two seizures, one at the school then one at the doorstep of the ER when we took him to the ER after picking him up from school, he was diagnosed with Epilepsy, the job I was working at, whom I might add had more illegal workers than legal ones, expected me to work past five just a week after my son's diagnoses and with the people around here you cannot expect them to care for an ADHD child with epilepsy, I wouldn't trust them with my dog...and the reason that we had to work past five to begin with is these women illegals were in the homeowner's kitchen sitting on their fat A*** and eating while I finished four rooms of the house and they did nothing, I quit, who wouldn't my family comes first!!!! Now it's been years and my son is number 1) 16 and number 2) hasn't had another episode praise the LORD but according to your logic, I am lazy and out of practice? It isn't frikking brain surgery bagging and scanning items or cleaning homes, you're an idiot!!!!!

[edit on 5-6-2010 by ldyserenity]

"If i ever become HR in company" , you will always be saying if "I" cos it will never happen. Your attitude is wrong not babybunnies. Companies need to only employ the best "man" for the job and the best "fit" for the company.

No one else matter...if we take the time to consider ever persons sob story where would we be? No where.....! So employing just stay at home mums is the wrong attitude. Only employ if they are right for the job above all other appicants. you attitude is the wrong one. Thats why you probably have a crap job if one at all. No one wants a do gooder. They are bad for the bottom line. Next you will be giving money away.

That's okay, I just think I'll start my own business in IT and I will:
one.) Hire only mothers/fathers whom have taken off work to raise children, can't leave out single fathers, you know.
two) Only the unemployed as those will be the ones who are most loyal and hard working to keep their job because those people choosing to search for work elsewhere while employed are untrustworthy in my opinion, they will do the same to the next company that hires them.
and
three) Everyone else's wil get tossed in the trash bin period.

Oh and I'll have no sympathy for ex-corporate a wipes, look to another corporation, my small business will not hire you because
1.) you'll be high maintenance.
2.) you'll want too much money
and
3.) You'll be considered untrustworthy!!!!!!

All ifs...you dont have this business and it will never happen. You are one of those dreamers who thinks the world owes you something. Your story is just that...a story. Employers my look at you while you are spinning your yarn and nod their heads knowingly but they do not care. Its the real world love. Life is but one big game...either play it or die trying.

Employing just stay at home people will collapse your business. NO bank is going to look at your business plan and willing give you money. I would rather give that money to a dead hamster. There would be more of it left for repayments 2 years down the line. With you it would be stupidity to give you money with that hiring attitude on your busniess model. No wonder you are talking in "if i had" sense. cos it will never transfer into the "I have'.

Executive officer, I have seen them come and leave whilst their arrogance and money is gambled in casinos every weekend. But you see I still stand by my point. Your six figure will have no chance of competition against companies such as, Microsoft and Google who values employer job satisfaction. And need I mention, the amount of money that they throw into charities.

How did you reach your six figure salary, let me guess, penny salaries and slave labor and complete employer dissatisfaction. Unfortunately, your days are numbered in this volatile financial market. You too, one day may be faced with debt after losing your six figure salary when your company hits the roof. Be not surprised, negativity and arrogance such as yours is a recipe for unemployment.

At the moment, you are just a pawn and a minority like every one else.

Have you actually read anything about google. They ONLY except people with first class or upper second class degrees. So that cuts half of these jobless people straight off the pile. Secondly...you must "FIT" in with the companies philosophy...again most of the jobless on here are out of luck there.

Cant wait to see how the reverse of trickle down economics works out for America. Trickle up economics...burn it to the ground WINNERS

Eventually those unemployed low-lifers will begin hitting corporations far worse than they are now and I'm not talking about tax payer dollars welfare state either.

I don't want to spoil it for the fat cats in CEO-CFO-PRESIDENTE-VP and upper management positions so I wont explain...

Get a load of this! Now they discriminate against non married, and openly admit about ethnic discrimination.

I am guessing that if the applicant is not married and does not have children, you believe that he will not stay long term. Wow, our society makes me sick.

Surely you aren't serious! Spend money on nice outfit + travel to go around offering to work for free? Why, to assure potential employers that you are in fact the droid they are looking for?

Better to start your own business, be it something so small as a cafepress shop or hot dog stand to get off the ground, than to offer yourself for FREE.

Wow your not very bright, wealth is the primary goal jobs are secondary. You might as well say building parking lots is the goal since it goes hand in hand with hiring more people.

WEALTH IS THE GOAL!, THE REST IS A CONSEQUENCE!

This why all you ever see on here is a bunch of whiners about the big bad companies, you don't understand they are doing what they are suppose to do, MAKE MONEY!

That works both ways, Mr. MBA Yacht.

Those in crap jobs or out of work, take note! Honesty, qualifications, work ethic... all secondary. Making money to continue eating and feeding your family is primary! Lie, cheat, steal, do what you have to do. Just don't get caught!
Learn from the pros, don't sit there and whine about them.

Well I was actually just making a point to the person who had no job for 15 years but claimed they tried. They never tried.

They were just lazy and of no use to anyone thats why they couldnt even get a job burger flipping. I would imagine that this person is either purely lazy or completely useless. Got a job in wal-mart now....why could she get one before.....her associates degree? That is the joke. Offering that useless piece of paper round like its a badge of honor or something.

So now she is shelf stacking or stock control or something but its better than sponging of the gov for 15 years i suppose.

She needed to understand what some people are going through n order to get a job. I actually offered a job to someone who offered their services for free to prove to me that they were the person for the job.

Dont forget your tax dollars are going to towards people like this to live for free. Free loaders are worse than stupid people!

I had to apply to over 50 places before I got my first job. Now I'm sure it's even harder to get a job. I've never done this, but it seems like it's easy to get pizza delivery jobs. Work there for a while delivering pizzas, and then get a better job. Best time to get a job is when you have a job. You've just gotta pay your dues.

As for those of you talking down to the unemployed, you should spend your time giving good advice, rather than putting people down. Putting people down does nothing to help you. All it does is keep the unemployed in their current state. This is no way to motivate them. They've heard it all before. Give them your best advice on how to overcome their situation. Sometimes people just need a little nudge.

In my first "real" job, I volunteered on off days so I could learn new skills.

What else can someone do but fill out job applications?? As I said before, I filled out job applications. The only jobs available required you to work nights and weekends. I was a single mother with no one to watch my daughter. I did not get a job until my daughter was old enough to stay home alone. The daycare centers were only open M-F 6:30am-6pm.

I don't have just an associate's degree now. I have a bachelor's degree as well and almost finished with a master's degree. But when I moved to KY I just had the associate's degree and every fast food place said I was "overqualified" to work there.

I applied everywhere and did not get hired. You can't force someone to hire you.

I graduated with honors. I was in student sentate for two years. I was definitely not lazy. I was able to keep my grades up in school even though my husband was stalking me and I was in court at least twice a week trying to get a restraining order against him. My husband was a government employee on first name basis with cops, magistrates, etc and they let him do whatever he wanted to me. Bet you never had to deal with that.

All you can do is fill out the job applications. You cannot force someone to hire you. Filling out applications and going to the handful of interviews = trying. Unless of course you propose I take a gun to the employer's head and force them to hire me that way or something? The job still wouldn't last long.

I suffer from neurological damage from the beatings. I pressed charges against him and his cop buddies destroyed the evidence and he walked. The judge said my injuries were not sufficient enough for it to have been assault and battery. I had to have help getting to the witness box, but it was not severe enough for the judge. I have other physical disabilities too that I was born with. I do what I can with the body I was given.

Now you mention all your "problems". OK the disability thing if noticable by employers will definitely be a put off. Unfortunately that is how 99% of employers are whether they admit it or not...just plain discriminating. Its the way life is and its bad for some. It happens far to often for anyone to really give a damn. Which is very bad for people in the position of having disabilities. But those that do not and are in a position of power do not care....again its the bottom line that matters and the fit for the company.

But your probs with your husband.....well that could be true or not but it seems everyone is against you! Im not saying you are to blame as i dont know the details but Ill tell you what i have heard on a weekly basis for 12 years or so. Peoples private sob stories. If you genuinely have neurological damage attributed to beatings then your Doctor and the hospital can confirm this....! Its not something that can be destroyed unless they got to them too. In which case i think you are making it up. Put your best foot forward at every opp instead of feeling sorry for yourself and how everyone is conspiring against you. If you have this husband who has beaten you and no one believes you then you need to file this report with higher authorities than your local police. Get the advise froma battered womans charity as most will have legal help free within the organisation. Get the backing of your local preist or what ever as i noticed in one of your posts you said thank god. with the backing of doctors, a proper charity and local preist or clergy plus photos you could of taken of yourself..this would be able to be filed with higher powers. Either way its always down to you...your life your responsibility! But good luck!!

Offering that useless piece of paper round like its a badge of honor or something.

It may be a useless piece of paper to you, but it very well may be a badge of honor to her. There are many people that are the first in their family to attend college, and to them an associates degree is something to be very proud of. Who are you to say she shouldn't be proud of her accomplishments, no matter how insignificant they may be to you. An associates degree should at least show an employer that the person put forth an effort to further their education. It's sad that you feel the need to badmouth another person and paint them and their accomplishments as being insignificant to make yourself feel more important.

Applying for a job or working in an industry is one thing. However, the problem lies with the job fitting. You may be the best skilled individual in the world, but if you can not fit with the company and people, than your career is at risk. It is a sad perception, yet it is a reality.

A more diversified job placement needs to be implemented in the western society, a system where HR job could easily be automated. I know, this is a far fetched from reality at the moment, but I believe that day will come.

Companies also discriminate against you if you are over 45-50, unless you're a seasoned CEO or CFO.

Their not suppose to but they do and there is nothing you can do about it.

Companies own America and the law is bent in their favor because they own DC.

Many posts I have read on ATS say, well if someone won't work that is their fault. Most people are not empathetic until the brown stuff hits their house.

My job is being outsourced to India (our clients are being kept in the dark / lied to) about this.

I'm 58 and lucky my husband at 66 makes enough to cover our monthly expenses when my job does go to some Indian in Mumbai.

It's happening all over America and those of you reading this and are smuggly thinking, well this won't affect me - think again.

Your next.

As stated before most people even here on ATS are not empathetic until they have walked a couple miles in your shoes.

You can only fill out applications, try to get someone to talk with you (good luck) and keep your chin up. You are right - you cannot force someone to hire you.

Out of curiousity how old are you?

Jobs are getting really scarce, especially ones that pay a half way decent salary.

The people out there poo pooing you just haven't been there and done that. They have no comprehension how tight the job market is now. Whats more, most don't care until they end up unemployed.

Like cattle, the majority just don't see the stun gun coming.

Also, besides education, age and looks do enter into it.

And I know I'm going to get flamed on this but I am just giving my opinion, as to what I have witnessed over my 40+ years in the work force.

If and when you do get that magical all important interview, as you walk up to the HR Person's desk, and they are looking at you within about two minutes just by looking at you they have formed opinions about you and if you look like you will fit in with the company.

For those people who want to say I'm wrong on this (very taboo) subject, case in point: In South America many people get plastic surgery to look "better" in order to get employed.

The people that actually do the hiring are just that, people and they come with prejudices and emotional baggage just like everyone else.

I've been working since 10 - yes 10 (milked cows, cleaned out barns, fed cows and chickens, did dishes, vacuumed, scrubbed floors, cooked and dusted)

I've always pulled my own weight and been "productive". I'm smart, hard working, honest and loyal to the hand that feeds me.

After 15 years my company is handing my job over "off shore". For the first time in my 36 married years I will not be bringing home a paycheck. I want to work but my job is being given away to someone in a foreign country.

I feel my country, the government that is suppose to be working for me, is not looking out for me, Ms. Common Midwesterner - my country, my government is allowing the company I have served for over 15 years to hand my job over to some cluck in India. Why? Our government serves the corporations and not the people.

The American Government has a mistress, many mistresses as a matter of fact, some of them are named, Monsanto, McDonalds, WalMart, Dupont, AIG, IBM, J.P. Morgan Chase Co., etc

Our government hasn't been by the people and for the people in a very long time - you are just now seeing how this is going to affect all of us.

The middle class is being systematically dismantled. Within 50 years there will be two classes in America, rich / poor.

Think your job won't be outsourced, or getting a job now is easy - think again.

Think that everyone that isn't working is a lazy slob, think again - many want to work, deserve to work but there aren't enough jobs out there and why should someone have to flip burgers making diddly squat not enough to put food on their table and a roof over their head and some, like Beyounce are worth hundreds of millions.

This planet is not being run logically.

The insane asylum is being run by the inmates.

Not everyone can be a rocket scientist.

Should we throw away people with only an average IQ and below?

Everyone that wants to work and be productive should be allowed to work and be productive.

Too many people born during the 80's and later are Service To Selfers and that my friend is what is screwing up the entire planet right now.

Not everyone is born with your 130+ IQ.

Would you want to throw these people away like trash?

I work a soup kitchen and many homeless people would like to work but could not get hired. Many are mentally challenged. But, and its a big but, they are still our fellow human beings.

I am so tired of small minded selfish people who think they made it all on their own.

Most times, they the lucky ones were that lucky.

They were born into the right family & enviroment and had the advantage of having "superior" genes, resulting in being a little bit smarter.

It's just that - luck the draw of the dice. “There but for the grace of God go I” ~ Proverbs

Watch Gatica a movie made in 1997 starring Uma Thurman. We're coming close to this futuristic society right now, I can see this coming.

I was raised to believe that those who are able to stand have a responsibility to help those who can't and not to trample over those who can't stand.

It's called being human.

We are all interconnected to each other, what affects one of us affects all of us.

While i agree with what people are saying, keep in mind that often people who have no job are that way for a reason.

I was layed off from a gig running a call center when the site closed. i didn't want to move until my son graduated high school. so i took a low paying job just to be employed while i looked for something in my pay bracket.

Perhaps the idea is to show that you have work ethic?
