Not another thread that implies America is the root of all evil in the world. Nevermind the fact that we keep the world afloat economically. Nevermind that without us, the world language of choice would be German. Nevermind that we've been adamantly protecting freedom and individual liberties for over 225 years. We must be stopped. Damn us and our imperialism. Damn us and our police state government. Nevermind the fact that no one can seem to point out a single thing we can't do today that we could do 25 years ago that our government has taken away from us. We're turning into a police state because some random guy on a conspiracy website said so!

On a side note, there really is a lot of support for Russia in this forum. I find it disturbing that so many Americans trust the Russian government over their own. When you start trusting the enemy, all hope is lost. You may as well just lay down and die. I mean, it's not like the Russians have a history of lying, right? They've always been a pretty honest government historically, right?

Considering the category of this particular forum, my opinion is that the OP is an Orson Wells style shocker! Good fun. Took some imagination and creativity and ultimately freaked this # out of the people who read it including myself.

I don't think Russia and the West are that close to armed conflict. What you're seeing is the reassertion of the Russian sphere of influence. More a return to "Cold War" than anything else as each side works to feel each other out.
The West stirred this pot with granting Kosovo independence and redrawing maps. While I side predominantly with the Russians because of this as far as Ossetia and Abkhazia is concerned, there is no question in my mind that the military intervention into what is still a sovereign neighbor was foolhardy at worst or counterproductive at best.
I suspect Russia will slowly remove forces from Georgia completely on their own time table. They will thumb their nose at the international community the entire time, because that is at its purest what this is about. In the end, when the withdrawal does come and go, they will most likely get what they want because the West isn't willing to come to blows over Georgia, rightly or wrongly.
This isn't about Georgia, however: they sent a clear message to Poland, Ukraine, Lithuania, etc that the US is not willing to back their goodwill with anything other than words -- they can invade one of the US satellites and Europe and the US are unable/unwilling to do anything about it. It's a major balance of power shift back towards Russia simply because the West has done nothing but blow wind. This is about Russia reasserting itself as a major world power. As such, it's been an unqualified success for them.
