I'm ashamed that I don't speak Spanish better (espcially since my Mom spoke 4 languages fluently and my daughter three).

Seems like that's not your only source of shame.

Why do you so strongly believe that law-abiding American citizens deserve less consideration than illegal immigrants?

Nothing personal, just trying to understand your perspective.

Considering that this nation is unlike any other in that it was designed to welcome people of all colors, religions and languages, I find it hilarious when people complain about having to "push 1 for English", or have to read a sign that has two or more languages.

The point is that it was never necessary as all our immigrants learned and spoke the language of the land. It wasn't until many years of ILLEGAL immigrants coming here by the millions things were changed. I would never go to a foreign Country and expect them to change for me and other people like me. How very rude and disrespectful and arrogant that would be! All others came here, learned and spoke English because it was the language of the land and that includes our legal Hispanics. It is one group being catered to.

So yeah, go ahead and laugh and try making another Country change just for you and your group and see how well that goes over. You really think they will respect you for that?

California itself is a lost state. There isn't much that can be done about it either.

I was advice you to move from that part of the U.S. and move to the Northwest.

I had to respond to this because it pissed me off.

I'm sorry but I disagree that expecting someone that immigrates to your country to learn the native language is rascist.

In fact, I think it's really #ty for any person to be so selfish that they expect an entire culture to adapt to them.

If I moved to another country should I suddently expect the natural born inhabitents of that country to cater to me because I'm suddenly there? How #ing selfish can a person be that they expect that?

Naw, I think it would be a lot more polite and considerate to the naturalized population if I learned their language.

That's exactly how I would treat it if I moved to another country too. I would learn THEIR language. I wouldn't expect them to learn mine.

If I moved to Mexico, I'd learn spanish.

If I moved to Japan; I'd learn Japanese. That's not really that hard to grasp is it?
I don't see why that thought process could be considered rascist.

I've agreed with you on a previous post, but just to be fair I want to point out that the medical staff at LA County are people that deserve our admiration. They work crazy hours for relatively low money. They do it because they genuinely want to help! There is a moving documentary about it. I watched it when it came out and can highly recommend it.

I don't know how an economy can survive like this. And with the latest actions on Illegal Immigration I think now is the final tipping point. As an L.A. Native born and raised, I barely recognize this city, this State. I only wish I had the funds to document it and make a film but I'm too busy with my own survival.

Will the last AMERICAN to leave california please not forget the flag?

My opinion as to why there is an abundant negative sentiment (specifically) with the hispanic population is, as a culture, they are unwilling to conform to American way of life. Now, this is very very thin ice because of the constitutional protections of free speech, religion, etc.

I identify myself as a constitutional libertarian, so I say this heavily, that, regardless of the constitution, there is a standard set by us as a society. Standards such as, English speaking. In your specific case (OP) you brought up a very good point that you could have easily been misdiagnosed due to the language barrier.

My biggest problem I have with the urban dwelling hispanic population is the destruction of communities, how they treat the environment and animals. and the complete disregard for American law.

Point overall, the same complaints you hear day in and day out about hispanics, you would never hear (for example) being said about Asians or Indians. Because when they immigrate from their countries, they practice their religious and cultural beliefs while still assimilating into American culture and adhering to American Law.

I know I am stereotyping but I am from, born and raised, Phoenix, Arizona. Hispanics and their culture are simply a way of life. However, I will end with, most hispanics that are my friends or I have worked with, would probably agree with me overall.

I fear what will happen is if their is a continuation of complete disregard for our laws and abuse of the system (such as) healthcare, it will bankrupt this country and everyone (even the hispanic demographic) will suffer.

Edit: Nevermind. Removed my entire post.

I've realised some people here still have an optimistic and healthy view regarding this world lol.

Despite myself feeling I know the truth of the situation at hand, and the history/motives behind it - it is sometimes better to not taint people's take on things and just let them be.

Hell, If you have not seen the 'chess moves' by now, I doubt my words will change your mind. Some perceptions of reality are tough to shake.

But not one of us can stop what is happening behind the scenes, so what does it matter? Ignorance is bliss.

For those who seek an answer, always ask yourself: who benefits?

Anyone who uses or sells drugs has a disregard for the law and not even close to half of that population is hispanic.

That is not true. People with different languages have always been coming to this country without knowing how to speak English. Asians, Mexicans, Italians, Africans, Bosnians.....etc.

We have always been flexible to help people assimilate in to our country. Over time, many of those groups did so quite well. The current up and coming generation of Mexicans are doing the same. They know the english language and are doing just fine.

It wasn't until many years of ILLEGAL immigrants coming here by the millions things were changed.

What has been changed? Are you not able to do all the things you need to do without having to speak spanish? Are you offended that there is a "spanish" option when you use a telephone automated system? Are you offended that signage may be posted in more than just english?

I would never go to a foreign Country and expect them to change for me and other people like me.

America is not like other countries. Are we not a country of many colors, religions, languages and cultural practices? Isn't that what sets us apart from any other nation?

And we're doing just fine, correct? Everyone is this country can still live their life around people that speak different languages and we all seem to get by, do we not?

It is one group being catered to.

No. We are simply providing needed services based on demand. There are many Mexican people in this country and we make sure we provide what is needed so that we can communicate. We do that same thing for areas that are heavily populated with certain groups.

In my town, we have a section that is almost all Vietnamese. Most of the signage includes English and Vietnamese. Another section of town is mostly Mexican and it is the same way there. I used to deal cards at a casino and all of the signage was in english AND Mandarin (I believe) because the Asians in this area love to gamble.

Supply and Demand. My area is quite diverse and there are many languages spoken.....but we still work and live together without any issues.

The real problem with immigration is that there is a big group of people that simply cannot stand the fact that America is an ever-evolving nation. They think America should be what it always has been and should conform to their idea of what it should be. These people tend to be xenophobic and not very welcoming to people that do not fit their ideal notion of what an American should be.

But they tend to forget that it is that diversity this nation was founded upon. People from many different countries and languages came to this country and built it together.....not all of them spoke English.

So yeah, go ahead and pull out the ever irrelevant "try that in any other country" argument. It just shows that you do not know what separates America from the rest of the world. You cannot compare the US to any other nation because we are supposed to welcome people to contribute to our society, not whine and cry because they are not just like you or I.

Oh really? Then why are factories and other jobs that have nothing to do with speaking a foreign language require that we speak Spanish in order to get that job?

We have plenty of Africans and Asians around here as well. I don't see them being catered to.

We have had plenty of Mexican and other Spanish speakers here for a very long time and never had to press one to hear English.

This is just a guess here, but possibly because a majority of the workers primarily speak Spanish and being able to speak it as well would greatly increase your ability to work with your peers. I don't recall it being illegal for a business to have language restrictions in its job hiring process even if the job doesn't call for it.

Affirmative action ring a bell?

Well seeing as how touch tone telephones have only been in existence since 1963 and weren't proliferated throughout the country until the 70's and 80's I wager there wasn't much time where what you said was the case anyways.

When one group came in such uncontrolled numbers illegally, then we were forced to change. Why do you think it is that we never had these problems before?

They are doing so well with English that we have to press one to hear our own language for important phone calls. They are doing so well that WE have to speak THEIR language to get a job to provide for our families in many areas. They are doing so well that a citizen of this Country could have lost his life in a hospital in his own Country. They are doing so well that WE have to order in Spanish in some restaurants in a Country where English is the language of the land. No, they are not doing fine. Even when some of them know the language they refuse to speak it. That is not doing well at all. Not when we don't have any problems with any other foreign language speaker, and we have over 200 languages spoken here. Others didn't force a change on the Country.

Let me ask you something...Would you move to another Country and expect their citizens to speak YOUR language because you and a bunch of your English speaking buddies happen to work their? That is unbelievable! Do you think the citizens of that Country that have to work with you would respect you for that? It is not up to the damned citizens of that Country to cater to you. It is up to you to respect the Country you chose to move to!

It doesn't matter if it is legal or not for a business to force such a policy of speaking a foreign language to get a damned job there, it is wrong, unfair, a slap in the face, rude, ignorant and a hell of an insult to its citizens.

A business is not representative of the will of the country. A business owner implements the policies that it feels makes the business run smoother. In this case, the owners felt like since they were getting many Spanish only speaking applicants, that they should go ahead and make it mandatory that everyone speaks Spanish there. It's their business, they can run it how they want. Or do you advocate making it illegal for businesses to do that?

Oh? I wasn't aware that businesses were in the business of being fair.
