It seems there is a lot of activity under the volcanoes near the quakes. Volcanoes with recent nearby earthquakes:
Aso - Tsurumi - Kuju.

Kumamoto, Kyushu M6.1 and M6.7 a/s 14-16 Apr 2016 - Preliminary
Phew that was a mission. Had to recenter the map, and have split out the 6.7 (7.0Mww IRIS) to have it's own Bing 200 maps so we can follow that separately.
It is a bit like the Canterbury 2011 series, each new big shock has its own aftershocks, it is impossible to split out which ones are residual from the 6.1 because they overlap by location, all you can do is use Time.
1590 Total so far. Scheeech! by the time I got that done (and some other stuff around home) its time to go back to NIED and grab another 2-300 lines ............
Then to complicate things the Reviewed data will start coming out soon.
I think I will keep it going as Preliminary, I have to go away next week on a trip and probably won't have much Internet time.

from that linked page

Nearby recent earthquakes (within 30km radius):

yeah there are a few volcanoes along the Median Tectonic Line in Kyushu.
looks like they are getting a Feed from NIED, but the magnitudes are quite high i.e. above M2
there are thousands more than that showing

how long is a piece of string?
the Aftershock Timeline graph for both big quakes shows the same decline, although the whole level of the 6.7 (7.0 IRIS) is higher as might be expected.
It may duplicate again and blow a 7.5 or bigger,
or maybe just fade away over the next 6 months .......
there is definitely no "increase" in aftershock magnitudes which may indicate another big quake coming
but then again there wasn't for the 6.1 before the 6.7 either .............

BTW this series has already passed the total number of aftershocks that the M7.1 SW of Kyushu Nov 2015 had over 4 months
in just 51 and a half hours!

Edit 1: Just downloaded the first of the Reviewed data from NIED.
only 2:32:01 (h:mm:ss) worth (as the first quake was at the ed of the day JST on the 14th.)
Will have to wait another day for more data.
During that 2:32hr period Reviewed data is showing 255 events, compared to 137 in the Preliminary data, almost double !!
so if you extend that ratio out, it is possible there have been 5000 aftershocks in the 53 hour period so far, not 2431
Anyway,
The first quake is officially 6.5ML (up from 6.1ML on the Preliminary data)
looking at some of the bigger aftershocks;
14/04/2016 12:42:24 UTC - 4.9 (downgraded from 5.1)
14/04/2016 13:07:35 UTC - 5.8 (upgraded from 5.6)
14/04/2016 13:38:44 UTC - 5.0 (downgraded from 5.1)
14/04/2016 14:43:41 UTC - 5.1 (downgraded from 5.3)
thats all there is to compare at this stage
so odds are there will be more quakes on review, but the overall energy released may be down.
edit on 0400000010610616 by muzzy because: ha! I got back and added info (edited) within the 4 hour (really only 2 hrs or sometimes less) editing window. wooohoo a win for muz

edit 2: from the page I get the data downloads from NIED

Hypocenter lists on Apr 15, 2016 are not available.

By default it opens with the last updated data, so should be the 15th JTS
they must be struggling with the volume of the aftershocks!

I already had the 14th JST from yesterday but I went back over it and found that there was another 33 events been added, so updated the 13th UTC

Man that one was a surprise.

There is no Buoy warning going off. But if you look at the data. It seems like a six foot surge in wave movement.

Strong Ecuador quake kills at least 28!

This just keeps getting worse!

At least 28 people were killed when a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Ecuador, knocking down buildings in the country's largest city Guayaquil and cutting power in the capital Quito. Vice President Jorge Glas said that a state of emergency had been declared across the Andean nation. "We have 16 people dead in the city of Portoviejo, 10 in Manta and two in the province of Guayas," in the west of the country, Glas told a news conference. Police, the military and emergency services "are in a state of maximum alert to protect the lives of citizens." The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center also issued warning for the nearby Pacific coastline.

In my very humble opinion the earlier quake was a foreshock, despite the fact that people seem to be calling the 7 an aftershock. Again in my humble opinion I do not believe there will be a larger even to follow now. As regards a piece of string it is twice as long as half its length.

How soon do we forget?

Click the image to enlarge

The graph is the energy release of the past year for earthquakes of magnitude 4.5+

As you can see the release of the past days is not the highest in the past year.

I am not trying to make light of recent events and feel for those injured or who have lost family.

The September spike was of course Chile with several aftershocks. Between the 18th of Nov and the 7th Dec there were 5 x M7+ and the March spike is the 7.8 off Sumatra.

Shaking now it may be. Quiet again soon it will be.

I think I need to stop checking RSOE, there's a hell of a lot going on right now and it's actually starting to look a little bizarre, as if someone just turned on a load of new sensors or something.

Just seen more happening in New Zealand, Alaska and Greenland.
I have to admit that I check in there occasionally when something happens, and I don't think I have ever seen this many quakes on their map.

Thankfully most of them are between 2 and 5.

If anyone has the time, some graphs showing EQ activity over the last month or so would be interesting to see
