Please try to find out more and let us know.

I am in Utah, and I did hear some odd sounds out of the sky a while ago.

He is listening to "Ground Zero" the radio show and I am too now.
There are several people calling in from all over the country, Utah, Georgia, etc, saying they are seeing fireballs in the sky.

....again, take it for what it's worth and don't break out the baby oil and tissues just yet, the doom porn hasn't started just yet.

Wow! Those dash cam videos were scary! It looked like the meteor or whatever was coming RIGHT at the car in some of them! I was expecting to hear a lot of Russian curse words and a sudden slamming of the breaks.

This is the most interesting thing I've seen online in quite a while. I wish I didn't have a headache right now because I really want to follow the development of this one.

I have watched meteors burn up in the atmosphere before. In the first video, you see it start out burning blue, then into green, then into yellow...this effect is caused by the various minerals/metals that are being vaporized in the atmosphere, very similar to the way fireworks are colored using various types of metals.
Obviously a meteor, and it split into at least 2 pieces as it burned through the atmosphere.
Nice find, OP, S&F.

Oh, and one of my favorite pieces of trivia is:
In outer space, outside of Earth's atmosphere, it is a meteroid.
Inside of Earth's atmosphere, it is a meteor.
If it reaches the ground intact, then it is a meteorite.

This is not an asteroid. If it were, this would be a MUCH bigger deal, and we would all know it first hand.

Nothing to show this is from the same event but if it is then...

This is what I got from a local

"Город эвакуировать не будут. Сказали всем сидеть дома и закрыть окна. Запасаться водой. На счет завода: там полцеха разнесло, да"

Roughly translates to

Evacuate the city will not. Told everyone to stay at home and close the window. Storing water. On account of the plant: it poltseha blown, yes

He is referring to the factory that was apparently hit

edit on 15-2-2013 by thePharaoh because: (no reason given)

You can watch it pass live if you want.

Info On DA-14 live pass

DA-14 will be closest February 15th2013, at 2:25PM EST, 11AM PST, 19:00 UTC.

DA-14 hasn't made it's closest pass yet. It's close, but not the closest, won't be for another 12 or so hours.

Hey Thanks!

Im trying to find the link to the real time observatories to watch Ison/DA14 with the kids tomorrow and cant find what I had on the previous laptop before it croaked. You have any idea? Ive asked 3 people now and no one happens to have a link they can or will share.
I found Griffith Observatory... but I cant recall the names of the others to look them up!

Here's Griffiths in case anyone wants it:

DA-14 isn't a comet, is estimated at 46ish meters...

The TUNGUSKA event, was caused by an object disputed to be around 100meters+. Twice the size of DA-14, and those are the low estimates for the Tunguska object.

What was impressive about the Tunguska event? Sure it knocked down a bunch of forest, so what? No body 1 person died, no body got hurt. Houses weren't decimated. IT struck in the middle of no where, in 1908. Blew up and caused a bit of fright. Just like this little show here in Russia. Enjoy gods fireworks.

It is quite possible you are right about the size although there is alternating stories of discrepancy
towards the recorded size matter - however, your statement about the impressiveness of the
Tunguska Event is remarkably wrong.
en.wikipedia.org...
Just become s you claim, no human lives were lost does not make it unimpressive.

It is listed as Earth's largest impact in recorded history that wiped out 770 square miles of forest;
but you are right - no HUMAN lives were accounted for; as if that's ALL that mattered!!!

I've spent lots of time reading about Tunguska, I'm not trying to be a know it all or claim to be right so I apologize for coming off that way. Tunguska was impressive, and it's size is disputed but the general consensus was around 100m, I've read articles that estimate double that size and up as well. As far as I read there was 1 reported death for that event. It did leave a large area of forest knocked over for sure. It is a pretty significant recorded impact site, but as far as impacts on earth go it's actually pretty small. There is know official crater for the tunguska event. Lots of proposed sites but no, known craters. There are plenty of famous craters we know of that make the tunguska event look like a mighty might.

DA-14 even if it did hit, would not produce the same results as the Tunguska event. That's all I'm trying to say. Sorry for coming off as an ass.

The bright flashes are probably ice superheating like what happens with thermite and ice.

The objects are moving far too fast for a missile to launch and intercept. There is absolutely no way a missile could chase one. Most of the meteors are composed of large amounts of ice. The earth gains water each year because of them but most are to small to see.

Looks like there were some leading comets to DA14. I wonder if there will be trailing debris following the asteroid. This is interesting nonetheless. S&F for you.

That particular flaming crater has nothing to do with this event.

It is a natural gas well that has been burning for years. Not a meteorite crater.

I almost jumped out of my seat with the noise from this one. I had to lower my volume fast.

Really close up footage, you can even hear the cracking, booming, pounding, and popping sounds.
