Because back then, we actually had leaders which weren't puppets of the USA or Britain. Our leaders back then stood up for Australia's interests instead of those of the USA and Britain.

Ever since the Cold War, the USA has had a tight grip on Australia's politics, and as such, we now have no chance of becoming as strong as what we could have been.

When it comes down to it, we are allies, nothing wrong with a bit of freindly fire here and there.. Unfortunelty if the US goes, because of our alliance, we will most likely be going with them..
