Battles between Syrian rebels and government troops have reportedly forced the closure of the main road leading to Damascus International Airport.

The news came as the Dubai-based Emirates airline suspended flights to the Syrian capital on Thursday.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said there was heavy fighting "along all the areas along the road" to the airport, southeast of the city.

The activist group said clashes were particularly intense in Babbila, a suburb bordering the rebel stronghold of Tadamoun.

Here is a video from the UN on the developing situation in Syria

Lakhdar Brahimi, Joint Special Representative of the United Nations and the League of Arab States on Syria - Security Council Media Stakeout (29 November 2012)
29 Nov 2012 - Informal comments to the media by Lakhdar Brahimi, Joint Special Representative of the UN and the League of Arab States on the Syrian crisis.
[English and Arabic]

Cant imbed video but here is the VIDEO LINK

Mr Brahimi seems to support the idea that the Syrian people are demanding change and are entitled to it. However he calls for leniency with respect to essential federal institutions that help run the country.

I am not sure if he is aware of the developing conflict with the internet being cut out

AP sources: US close to shift on Syrian opposition

The Obama administration is preparing to recognize Syria's new opposition council as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people in the coming weeks, paving the way for greater U.S. support for groups seeking to oust President Bashar Assad's regime, officials said Thursday.

Announcement of the move — which has already been taken by several U.S. allies — is planned on or around a conference of more than 70 nations in Marrakesh, Morocco, on Dec. 12. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is planning to attend the latest so-called Friends of Syria gathering.

Here is a couple things:

One of the opposition groups is acknowledging terrorists/mercenaries in Syria:

en.rian.ru...

A key member of the unrecognized Syrian opposition accused Turkey on Wednesday of allowing Saudi mercenaries to enter through its border with Syria.
“These people are destroying Syria,” Haytham Manna, spokesman for the National Coordination Committee for Democratic Change, told the Voice of Russia. “Unfortunately, there are political players such as Turkey who allow them to invade Syria.”

Most of the opposition groups, except for the ones the UN/NATO etc want to recognize, DO NOT want foreign intervention, they want reform.

also, a few tweets/fb msgs:

@syriancommando
Terrorist's attempt to attack #Damascus civilian airport has failed. Note that #UAE canceled its flights today -- foreknowledge... #Syria

-"This is not happening from Syria's end guys, state media is also down"

-"Syrian state media is also down, the internet shut down is not from Syria's side."

-"When our spokesman for the foreign ministry can't even #ing make a tweet you think the government would do that? its not ISP blocks there's ZERO communication even at the top level sana doesn't work that's on a seperate network"

And a new article up at LandDestroyer:

Makes sense that Syria won't cut their own throat in their desperate hour. Someone else agrees with you, here.

"Terrorists" cut Syria's Internet - minister of information

Syria's minister of information said that "terrorists", not the state, were responsible for a countrywide Internet outage on Thursday, a pro-government TV station said.

"It is not true that the state cut the Internet. The terrorists targeted the Internet lines, resulting in some regions being cut off," he was quoted by al-Ikhbariya as saying.

State TV quoted the telecommunications minister as saying that engineers were working to repair what he said was a fault in the main communications and Internet cable.

Thank you, Zaphod... Did you see the transition from ground and pound to air war in the last week? Gee we wonder why...

Definite game changer. Maybe you have already brought this (it is a week old). Any thing you can tell us about the items here would be very enlightening. Remember Afghanistan after the Stingers were first introduced? Within days helos and jets began to plummet to earth and then the Soviet pilots refused to fly...

Game Over.

I wonder whose picking up the names for them the CIA?

No going back in battle for Damascus: rebels
