I think that would be an interesting Guess Who's Coming To Dinner sequel. Personally I think if there were aliens then it would be similar to the Mass Effect universe: other species do not have an amino acid based cellular structure like we do, so eating our food would kill them. The chances for romance aren't good when just kissing someone could lead to anaphylactic shock for either individual .

I was raised in Asia; Japan, and China. and I am a girl, except I was born in 82 so I'm not a girl as much as I am a woman who thinks like a girl. I am a friendly person though because I lived in some very much population places, and not looking very Asian at all I felt I was included in friendships more because I did not like arguing or picking on others like some people seem to do a lot in some places I've been. The last time I went home I noticed people smelled like fish, garlic, and misso. I was a little put off by this and wondered if when I first came to the U.S.A. I smelled like that. I bathe often but everyone just about does in Japan, I was not very used to the Fragrances women wear here, but when I returned from home I began wearing perfumes almost every day because I noticed here different people also have strange smells. I'm not being racist or anything but have you noticed some people seem to really smell as though they have had a bathroom accident? There are a lot of people who smell like that. I have an automobile here. In Japan there are trains and people bicycle a lot, traffic is bad except in rural places, and just about everybody rides a motorcycle or a moped every now and then, it isn't as hard to find a place to park them either, and they are easy to pay to use for a short time. I like American food! I probably smell like a hamburger in a pizza shoppe on top of a pile of patchouli outside a steak house. I love beef, it is very affordable here, and there are pork products I have yet to try, but so far it has been good...I don't want to smell like a piggie, so maybe I shouldn't eat too much pork. I like leather shoes too, they smell different here and are made stronger, depending on where you shop. Little stores are not very common here, they are everywhere in Japan, and sell many different things that American people probably wouldn't like. Visitors to Japan make funny faces when trying new foods. My nose isn't realy big even though I smell a lot of new things here and new things there when I've been here. Nobody bows here and I've learned not to make the usual respectful bowing of the head and shoulders all the time, nobody bows deeply here at all! And people you don't know interupt private conversations with questions about am I some kind of vietnam person or something when I speak with my father in Japanese. I like to look at them blankly and act like I do not understand english, it makes them not bother us with stupid things. My fatherhas been in Asia so long he has forgotten how to talk in american english, and so we converse in Japanese most of the time. oh no. I'm too chatty this evening.

btw welcome to the site. if you are perceiving a popularity contest here i would say this site has it's fair share of ego strokers but as a whole it is a nice place with plently of opinions.
the information you supplied regarding the droppa stones was quite a read. i am sure others as well as myself would like to read more from you.

Probably not. How many people do you know who can make friends with others (humans!) that are radically different from themselves? (I know some, but very few)

How many people do you know who can be friends with people that are handicapped or otherwise weird, like those with strange nervous ticks, or people who stutter or have Tourette's Syndrome.

Add to that a whole set of biological needs and communication means and we are talking about something closer to "can a man be friends with an extremely intelligent and benevolent flying squid that smells weird all the time and has a total lack of respect for human notions of personal space"

Since this is a possibility for what an alien might be like, then my answer is probably not.

I can see how some people just could not handle being friends with something [someone] so different. it would be a lot to gather in.

I have thought before that EBEs might seem 'evil' by human standard in that it's possible [if they exist] that their agenda is somewhat uncaring of or even contrary to our own present-condition survival. I think of how we tag animals to study their migration, habitat and patterns, and we believe we're doing things for the good of the creature .... but I'm sure it scares the crap out of them. These tagged/darted/tranquilized animals probably consider us to be adverse.

I believe EBEs exist.......... I wonder also if they might be from our own planet -- hidden either geographically (seabed, interior of planet) or temporaly.

That pretty much outlines my trepidations regarding ET/EBEs, plus the notion that if they were really caring or in tune with our psychology, they wouldn't abduct any time, let alone in the wee hours of the night. Any human that needs to sneak up on me isn't my friend.

I went into this whole harangue to explain that it would depend upon how the ET approached me. An offer of friendship while I'm secured to an exam table is no friendship at all. Approached on semi-equal terms and allowing for my very limited intelligence compared to theirs......... sure, I think I'd like that very much. Think of how you might approach a wild animal -- cautiously, soothingly. It's possible that we humans are a physical threat to them, so I wouldn't blame them for having protective technology.

I've put myself mentally in this place many times, and even wished for an encounter. This aspect of my life is concerning to my Bride; she is right -- few people seem to benefit from the stress and drama of an alien encounter.

Short answer: Assuming it wasn't a forced contact, but a true mutual relationship, then a resounding YES! I think I could easily be friends with an exterrestrial being. I would consider it a high-point of my life (nextToOurWeddingDay,Dear)

I'm not sure I can mentally handle being friends with some of the humans I know - but we're still friends :-)
