So much discussion of aliens involves invasion, abductions, government cover ups, but what if you met a genuine ET and he was a good person. Would you be friends with him? Could you mentally handle being friends with a being from another planet?

Would you be a genuine friend or secretly wish to expose him for your own gains?

I suppose some people would be scared, but if he was genuine and didn’t want my brain for experiments, I would give a whirl. Would you?

As long as he didn't start cosying up to my wife, yeah absolutely!

I would, however, demand he takes me away from this cesspool of a planet. I had a spot all picked out on Mars, but his planet would be a lot better methinks....

If the Alien was a nice, erm, Alien then i don't see any reason why not.

But why would an Alien want to be friends with me? of all people?
If this Alien had mastered inter-stellar travel and all that goes along with it then i think there would be a pretty large intelligence gap, I think i'd have to buy the Alien a "I'm with stupid" tee-shirt

It would be nice to go for a trip off planet though, get away from it all for a while.
I'd have to come back though, can't leave you all behind to toil alone

I can only give you a short answer: Yes I would try to be friends.

Sure why not!

Terrestrial friends can sometimes be a let down.

Now if its a female then....well.....who knows!

Well, if I was in the position to be friends with an alien, I think some trust would already be there, so I would. I see it as maybe me meeting a friend, maybe a 'weird kid' and we start talking and after a while he shows me he is an alien. (how? some very advanced technology, some kind of magic, reading my mind or sending me messages through his mind)

Does not the process here apply to having a friend from another country? An alien, technically still. It's near enough the same thing.

I did once. He liked Reeses Pieces. We had a small adventure.

I only told one person. A fink and jerk by the name of Steven Spielberg!

Seriously?
Sure. Why the heck not!

Being able to use an advanced technology can not be used as proof of real intelligence.
Stupid, non intelligent people can us a TV set. If it malfunctions or gets broken, can they repair it?
Can they invent the next generation of TV sets?

I would kil it and sell its dead body to the highest bidder.

I don't need another friend in my life.

Yes, definitely. I´ve always thought that this approach is very simplicit and primitive to think (or believe these theories), that aliens are evil and aggressive monsters. People just need to find something "alien" from outside world to project their inner monsters to. There are so many speculations and also many very interesting cases, but we can´t be sure of anything in this matter.
I believe Universe is filled with life, unimaginably diverse and fascinating. If I´d met good person from another planet who would want to be friends with me I´d be very happy and very curious. I´ve been always genuinly interested in other cultures. And I would never expose a friend to anyone that might danger him/her/whatever

Obviously there would be good, bad, and neutrals of any race.

To the OP:
Would I befriend an alien?
It can't be any more risky than befriending humans now can it!?

Oh, and aliens wouldn't put me in jail either!

We are talking about advanced alien species from distant planets aren't we?

I dunno I kind of expect them to have sophisticated defenses like force fields and paralyzing beam weapons.
If they didn't have those types of things I would be incredibly disappointed and bewildered.

Sure, I would befriend him and start to indoctrinate him not to believe what our government and leaders say unless he can read their minds. I would have to educate the poor alien about how corrupt mankind is and that he should be careful who he talks to.
