Is there any way to get rid of rats without traps or poisons like if there are cats in the house that may be hurt by those?

Or is it simply time to call out a professional exterminator and is that a long term solution?

Put your cats to work.
Appoint one as Chairman Meow, and the rest will follow his lead.

My dad's wife told me put dryer sheets around the places
you would normally see the rat and the smell will get rid of them.
Worked for me, might just be a coincidence?

Cats are natural rat repellants.

Rat traps are also natural, no pesticides.

BINGO!

First thing you want to do is locate entry points and plug them up. Secondly, keep everything clean of food..the counter tops, the sink, the floor, etc. Same goes for water. Also, you will want to secure all dry goods (grains, cereal, dog/cat food, etc.) in an area that is inaccessible to rodents.

Other "natural" options include getting a cat to patrol your residence and, as a last resort, move and let the rats be the headache of someone else.

...get rid of your lazy cats or stop feeding them... if you cant do that, get a dachshund... territorial little buggers, originally bred to hunt badgers but they dont care - rabbit, squirrel, rat - dont matter... if its on their turf, it'll be dead soon (although, like cats, they often like to toy with their victims)...

Buy a Boa. Snakes eat rats and it`s natural.

Or I hear they eat those critters in China might be a good food source if the SHTF.

Real similar to how we used to get rid of them at an old house I once lived in.

We used like an old style wash bucket and sprinkled a little grated cheese in the water. I've heard some folks made little 'ramps' out of planks or something so the rats just run up the ramps, smell the water/cheese and dive in.

The next morning, we would just empty out the water---rats and all.

it's evil, but some sun flower seeds floating on top of the water works according to a crazy co worker.

Kill it with fire. Burn the house down that will get rid of them.

Easy to make bucket mouse trap, works for rats but use a large 4 or 5 gallon bucket. They can be released alive, but far away from your residence. I've used this many times and it works like a charm.

safe for lazy cats and there are plenty of how to videos on the making of the trap. It's easy takes less than 3 minutes if you have any functional motor skills.

1. Go to your local animal shelter

2. Pick out a mean looking cat, preferable with a few scars (means he knows how to get down to business)

3. Give him an intimidating name (will boost his confidence)

4. Take him home, hose him down (because he probably stinks, and it will make him mad, which will help with #5)

5. Unleash him on the rats

6. Tell him you're sorry for the whole hosing down thing ("It was just business, it wasn't personal! You know that, right? Right?")
