GG isn't all that useless a position. If for example an RCMP probe found out that the PM, who has a majority and can't be kicked out, violated the law in spending G-8 money the GG can kick him out.

If there is ever an unbreakable stalemate on something, the GG can step in. The GG is a real position that keeps parliament accountable and running. Even if you dump the commonwealth, I'd still want someone with the power to kill the government if they are proven corrupt.

Lieutenant Governors, they are useless figureheads.

Being part of the commonwealth is voluntary. Canada has independence already.

I don't understand what the problem is. It shows that Canada belonged to one of the greatest empires to have ever existed on earth. They should be grateful that they were part of it. It's all history now.

We will all soon be under the whips of China then you'll be begging for the good old days then.

Of course there wasn't. We weren't a country then. We were still a British Colony.

I don't mind being a member of the Commonwealth. We have a long tradition with many of the other countries in it. We have a lot of economical ties with them as well.

And , ftr, I think it is great that they decided to put the Royal back in the Forces. My family members past and present are smiling today. I talked with four vets today, three of whom served during the change over, and to a man, they all said it was a great day.

Go ahead, as soon as you leave the Commonwealth, you will be integrated into America

Take your pick

I would pick Latvia over the US intergration.

I imagine if Canada had joined the US in the American revolution against the British, the whole thing would be different and Canada would have been superpower like the US.

It's to force the military to swear allegance to the British royalty rather than the Canadian people. This is part of the takeover, the global government run by the royal and banking elites.

Well, here's one Canadian that agrees with you. I have seen sufficient evidence to the fact that there are no true elections in Canada. The election results go to the Holy Whore and she decides who gets to dictate policy in MY homeland. I remember on her last visit, our armed forces spent untold sums of cash to make the event "royal" in nature. This includes protective escort, facilities, pompous decorations, you name it. I personally think it was all a bloody waste. We need to start making our own decisions and it is clear to me that Harper cannot hack it in the internationalist landscape that we face today. He tries to bring us closer to the good ol' US of A just as they're on the brink of financial catastrophe when it will hurt us most. He is not to be trusted as well. Sorry for the rant but I felt it needed to be said.

EDIT: BTW for the record, guess who owns British Petroleum? Doesn't stray that far from "holiness" if you get my drift.

Well now you've heard from one Canadian Vet that really thinks that the Queen should not be followed in principle. Having seen the way things really work in wartime and in so called "peacetime" I have become sufficiently disillusioned regarding " the system " that I have no problem speaking out against it. As a Vet who was summarily given a "section 8" because I refused to step down when told to shut up about the nasty realities that became a daily occurrence during my 4 month deployment ("why so short?" you may ask. Let me just say it's a long story, of which I care not to describe.). BTW it's real easy to label someone crazy when everyone around them have been so thoroughly indoctrinated into the system that they actually believe the BS that they're told they're fighting for. They aren't told that our role in Afghanistan was a compromise with the US so they couldn't say we didn't do anything. It is all this and more which has made me incredibly jaded on the concept of what they describe as "dying so that others may live". Let me just say that I have lost far more than I have gained in service of "Her Majesty, the Queen". Let that be that I guess. (Mods feel free to move to the rant section, I just had to get it out.)

Well thats what happens when your given your independence as opposed to taking it.

kids going on multiple shooting sprees, thousands of serial killers on the loose, totalitarian police forces who are on the verge of losing control, complete moral decay of a society, fear, ghettos, racism and imperialism is what happens when you are descendents of traitors.

Your country is a joke. You have no history. A nation that couldn't develop itself is not one that is intelligent.

Don't troll. At any rate, whatever country you're from (probably the states since you don't have anything listed in under location) is probably no better than Canada. We failed to develop? Canada is a developed nation just like the U.S. and as far as intelligence goes, Canada has produced some of the most important minds in the realms of science, mathematics, architecture, art, film, music and just about anything else you can think of. So don't go spouting ridiculous one-liners about the country I know and love.

Oh, and for the record: I, like most Canadians, am neither proud nor resentful of my country's relationship with the Queen. Yes, she has the power to suspend parliament and do a bunch of other spooky stuff, but it's rarely necessary to do so and in the past has been done for good reason (see: 2008 prorogue on account of opposition revolt and general stupidity among politicians). The time will probably come where we will separate ourselves entirely but for now the deal works.

Sorry that ended up being long but It really annoys me when people hate on Canada for no real reason, which I've seen a lot of in this thread. Come on guys, we're just happy, normal people who want to relax and probably be your friend. Anyone who's ever been here would probably agree. Anyway, respect to the OP and keep on truckin'.

Whoa bit of an information basis there, who said I was talking about a specific country, India took their independence through non violent means by shaming Britain, the U.S. by a violent revolution, What of France and all that rebellion they did?

When independence is taken it comes with less baggage then when it is allowed to be "independent" at the leave of a monarch.

96% of Canad's land mass is owned by The Crown. That is why Canada is part of The Commonwealth.

What would have happened i wonder if Britain had not been fighting against Napoleon in 1812? If the US had still invaded Canada as she did, then Britain would have had greater resources to fight them. In fact we could have well have been talking right now about the US being intergrated into Canada

You can't deny it is part of our national character...look at the side of an OPP cruiser, or road sighs such as provided below:[atsimg]http://files.abovetopsecret.com/images/member/74e1fc3e9d57.gif[/atsimg]

We are who we are, and it is a sad world where we feel the need to commodify ourselves to see if we can afford our heritage. I am by no means a worshiper of the 'Royals', but I'm not going to get bent out of shape ousting them from the collective Canadian psyche. We have more important things to worry about. Not that Steve is going to enhance our military any by making them 'Royal' again. What's next? Fix our subs by painting them? extra DIV
