I think the reality is that most people don't care about America or Americans one way or another as long as they stay in America. It's when America comes into contact with other people in other countries that the problems always start.

Hey, I like Americans, and I like America, in fact I'm vacationing there this summer. But you ain't us, and we ain't you, so lets keep it that way.

Erm, I didn't say 'we' were 'you'. I was merely opining something that's hardly unique and one you seem to in part agree with: America and Americans are OK where they are, but when it comes to their involvement outside their own country, from foreign policy, tourism, to the premise of this thread, then it's another matter. For many Americans, all 'foreign' countries are merely stats for some weird, messed-up, chest-beating, jingoistic game of 'Top Trumps' where America is always bigger, better, faster, louder, whatever.

I was actually addressing Night Star's plaintive "Everybody hates us", through your post...sorry about the confusion. Americans aren't the only ones accused of being ...shall we say, 'overly assertive?' when abroad.

You can always tell where the Germans and Brits are sitting in a resort...French Canadians as well, and I hear that ROC Canadians can be noted for their exuberance as well...especially when the beer starts a-flowin'.

But when they are needed...the Yanks are right there.

Thanks mate but I think we'll pass.

You guys are nice and all.

Hell I love some of yas to death but until you folks stop spending almost as much as the rest of the world combined on your military, realize that the rest of the world works on the metric system, the letter "u" belongs in words such as humour, colour and honour and that it really shouldn't cost a person thousands of dollars to have a baby, no thanks.

If you can get some of those issues sorted out, maybe then we can think about opening a dialogue to consider sitting down to discuss the possibility of the chances of us getting together to see what we think about the idea.

with all respect due...regarding your comment about "Quebec/Ottawa sucking the life out of treasury"....you might be right about ottawa since they are the one managing the treasury, but regarding Quebec i dont think it apply since we are the most taxed province and we bring way more money with hydro quebec/lotto quebec. My opinion is that you are not well informed regarding province incomes compared to population.

Your bureaucracy blows goats. Seriously.

The amount of latititude at the State level is retarded.

Election of Justice officials is just about the stupidiest idea ever.

That being said - the US could seriously use having Canadian bureaucracy. Yours is a MESS. Seriously. A tragic ridiculous shame.

As to MONEY. All the people complaining about the one currrency and the Amero....yeah, you guys been HAD.

We are all on the USD. My money is measured in USD.

That means you and I and the Mexicans, and a dozen other places, are all USING ONE CURRENCY. You all been fooled by the PICTURES on the paper. We HAVE one currency.

You forget that the value of the loonie floats against the US dollar...which means if ours is high, it negatively affects international trade and manufacturing...so the pictures on the paper (or coin) do matter.

No, they just are a visual representation of trade barriers. In reality, a CAD is just a USD with a decimal point.

BTW... We have a very strong Conservative Party (right wing) here in Canada that is actually in power at this time.
(Note: although it is a minority government they holds the largest part of the popular vote amongst the three leading parties)

We are not all left leaning socialists.

...except for the part where their relative value changes and that swing factor affects our economy.

Want to read a scary article. I'll warn you its really scary! Borders are for public perception and tariff collection. The new reality is that big business has no borders; the fences are for the sheep. Besides has anyone been to Alberta lately? It's more American than America?
It's really disturbing how $$$ will break up a family (IE equalization payments)

I always felt we should absorb canada. Canada is weak and powerless leaving it open to invasion from an enemy to establish a beach head before invading America.

Therefore I always felt we must protect Canada by taking it over and securing their lands and also getting the rights to their minerals. There are alot of minerals and resources in Canada that they dont care about. Also if Canadians cared about humanity they would do more to strengthen their military to insure the continuity of the greatest democracy ever, AMERICA.

Canada has had long enough to grow as a country but as failed to reach the level of success that we have as americans in art, technology, and military growth. Therefore in order to protect ourselves and for the good of these canadians its high time we claim thier land as our own to expand our borders and let freedom reign.

You talking about the Olympic Hockey Teams? (Men's and Women's)

I thought we settled that out?

Anything else, I think it would be fitting for you to c'mon up here and give it the old college try. We'll leave a light on, eh?

If I believed in the White Christ I'd be on my knees praying that this post is some kind of satire, making a clever point about something through humour.

As it stands, I really don't know what to believe.

Your post is beautifully written. It sums up extremely well why we don’t want to be you. Anyone still wonders why we are against the union after reading your post?

If I didn’t know any better, I would think you posted that as sarcasm, but I fear everything you said there are your real beliefs.

Yup, military growth, that’s a good one. That’s why I can travel safely all over the world, because our military sucks. That’s why we want our boys back from the godforsaken places because we care about them going off on a wild goose chase dying for obscure reasons.

We don’t have technology ( I won’t mention Blackberry or Bombardier now) or notable people (Gosling James, Abraham Gesner, Leonard Cohen ) and we don't know what to do with our resources.
How true you are on this last one. That’s why we export energy and oil to USA,because we don’t know what to do with such riches.

Let the freedom reign ? quick,I need a glass of water…or shoud I say a beer ?

I live in Alberta.

You would consider a conservative party member in Alberta to be a leftwing Democrat with extreme socialist leanings.

I'm not making that up. There was a great interview where the "right wing" from Canada and the US were invited. They had on Preston Manning, who at the time was the leader of the Reform Party (which became the Alliance then merged with the Progressive Conservatives and became the Conservatives).

This party came out of Alberta primarily. It was about the furthest right in Canada you could get and still be electable.

The Republicans in the interview were TOTALLY confused by Preston Manning being there. One of them even said outright something to the effective of "You are a conservative??!!??!!?"

On an international level, Canada isn't socialist. It is almost exactly centre. On both the civil and the economic scales. Canada isn't "socialist." And Alberta isn't "right wing."

Canada is literally a country that is the embodiment of "Moderation."

if thats not a joke, then by all means, come on over. you'll be in for quite the rude awakening. do not mistake our canadian demeanour for weakness...you will find that we're not weak at all, we just know how to pick our battles.

Yeah.

Too bad that the Russia wouldn't be too happy with your military being that close.

Why do you think we are still a country for all that the USA and the USSR have wanted to take for Canada for about a hundred years?

The Cold War isn't THAT over that in either of your countries.

Lol! Fun thread!

As a Canadian --- I’m afraid I’ll have to put my foot down on that one. Absolutely no. Lol, I love the American people --- in all their deep fried glory (j/k) and I know Canadian’s and American’s share many many similarities – but dear OP, on behalf of Canada --- I still have to say no. (Thank-you though for the invitation!)

On a serious note, I think that NWO or not, we need to have some illusion that there are checks and balances between different countries. And I mean no offense here but based on their track record I don’t really think I want a Bush or an Obama to be running our country. We have our hands full with Harper. And the Federal reserve is just plan scary. Then if we add on the US military complex on top of that...I mean come on!

Besides do you guys really want to live in Igloo’s in sub zero temperatures where your only heat is found in the bosom of Rita Macneil?
