THANK YOU Extralien! I couldn't be arsed to do what you did, but you saved the day. It seems people need to be constantly reminded to deny ignorance on this site which is quite worrying.

You're absolutely spot on. The rock is there the whole time and can be seen poking out above the rock in front of it.

Fair play to the OP for the effort etc but this is solved.

This is simply part of the rover, sun shield, solar panels etc, you can see it's shadow on the ground which is much less affected by the fish eye effect. If you put a line through the middle you'd find they are symmetrical.

No mystery unfortunately.

This can be explained. The Anomaly shows that the rover has shifted in position and the last angle it is very close actually being able to look downwards at the object that is now being seen. ANGLES plays tricks.

Hello mike... me again

Well, i thought I'd try to show what I meant rather than explain it..
Key things to look for.. the big rock with the crack on the right.. you can see its side in the first photo. By the last photo you cannot see the side, just its corner.

From my perception of the placing of these rocks i have attempted to recreate the layout.. Notice how the silver portined side of the dongl cap disapears to emphasise the side portion of the big rock with the crack..

And here is the entire layout from above so that you can see how i perceive the formation over the are in order to get these shots.

And the objects used for scale

Great example and was the first thought when I saw the images. Thanks for showing a specific example!

i can see that rock in all 3 pictures and i dont think it moves, i think its the angle of the camera. u can clearly see the third picture is way off to the right because you no longer can see the one left back side of the huge rock on right. so with that in mind, i cant perceive this to be a moving rock or a placed rock.

Hmmm...Looks like two buildings, the right hand one resembles a house with a inverted V roof - ^

I think it's nothing more than a part of the Spirit. But the question is, which part?

Cheers!

I believe this has been discussed earlier. Most of the part that "look" like an horizon is actually the "spirit" looking from the camera that sists underneath it. So you are looking "under" it kinda.

The real sky is the little part on the right.

It also has a fisheye distortion which makes it looks corny.

Here's what I mean.

[atsimg]http://files.abovetopsecret.com/images/member/f73e421be61b.jpg[/atsimg]

Also added a epileptic gif animation of the rock. I know we already have an explanation but did this anyway.
If you look to the right you see the stones on the ground move downward quite alot due to the change of angle.

So yes this is a clear angle issue. Like Extralien illustrated.

Cool pics!
That had me scratching my head for a few minutes!
But the others are right, It's taken from different angles.
I don't want to use the term "debunked", but I think we can agree this has been explained.
But how cool would it have been to see a real live Mars Turkey!

What is the mushroom / large bolt shaped object?

Is it just a bolt that's fallen off something or a weird shaped rock??

Hi Mike,
There is just one more thing,
It looks to me that the last pic shown should really have been the first
of the sequence, then the first shown second, and middle one last.
The numbers might confirm that, the pictures in that order are moving round from right to left.

mike,

I am no expert, but that is really interesting.

I can see exactly what you are talking about, something is absolutely moving or the rover has shifted positions and it seems like the objects are moving.

I am still unsure about this explanation. This would suggest that the object in question be set back considerably further than what it appears. IMO it appears quite close. Can we identify other rocks within the formation that have also appeared to move that far?

I liked the pumice idea, but pumice blowing around would quickly lose any sharp edges like this one has. Pumice is very fragile.

I think the rock (?) is too close to be an illusion caused by camera angles.

About J.P. Skipper's report on the subject...

He actually demonstrates how the object "moves" between two images taken at the exactly same angle. That's pretty odd I think. But I also think it may be a "tampering" issue, which Mr. Skipper's fans are well aware of... (other examples at Mars Anomaly Research, report 163).

This is the three pics in order as they should appear,
they change slowly to allow perspective.
Use full screen.

Just a gut feeling, but notice that in one picture it's cropped so even if the "thing" were there, it wouldn't be visble in the frame.

Also notice that one picture is in HTML format, the other two are in .jpg format; possibly indicating a change and re-save.

I'm ALL for finding cool things on Mars! And totally believe things are being hidden, just doing my part to be diligent!

Hmmm. What a conundrum! I just can't figure out which of those two suggestions is most likely.

Aren't there dust storms on Mars?
Is it possible that strong winds blew the rock over?
