To undermine the President, and his foreign policy with regards to Iran I suppose. Possibly on behalf of former President Obama to try and salvage the deal his administration put in place somehow.

To respond directly to your response, it would make sense if he was president. He is not!

He told them to wait out the Trump administration.

The reason he admitted to meeting with them was most likely to get publicly for his new book and he isn't worried about any potential consequences. He personally had a lot invested in the Iran deal and sees the Trump administration as a temporary inconvenience.

He's an arrogant wealthy elite liberal with nothing or no one to fear.

In my limited experience with men that have a lot of money and power, the one thing they always strive for is more money and power.

And as suggested, there pretty much has to be a "deep state" angle there as well.

Supposition on my part, but I'd put money down on that bet.
