The mountain[Mount McKinley ] will be renamed Denali, President Obama said Sunday, a day before traveling to the state.

Obama renames Mt McKinley.....Wait, what!??!?

I had no idea presidents could just go around renaming stuff...
Umm, does that mean Trump can rename everything? Cause he has a history of that....
I can see my beloved home state renamed Trumpsas or Texump....

Anyhow, President Obama should get back to his main mission of dismantling America and remolding it into a socialist paradise for everyone...literally everyone...especially people from Stone Age "societies."

Anyhow, I digress...

Side note: please spare me the "it's the original name" malarkey....last time I checked, "Everest" isn't a common word for Tibetans and Nepalese....

Did you read WHY the name change? Did you look into who wants and who DOESN'T want the name change? Obama isn't renaming jack. He's simply doing the administrative stuff.

He's not renaming it.

It's being reverted back to the original name given to it by the Alaskan people.

Obama Will Restore Mt. McKinley's Name To Denali On Alaska Trip The peak was named Mount McKinley in 1896, but Alaska natives had long before called the mountain Denali, meaning "the High One."

Reuters Posted: 08/30/2015 05:11 PM EDT | Edited: 7 minutes ago WASHINGTON, Aug 30 (Reuters) - President Barack Obama on Monday will officially restore Denali as the name of North America's tallest mountain, siding with the state of Alaska in ending a 40-year battle over what to call a peak that has been known as Mount McKinley. The historic change, coming at the beginning of a three-day presidential trip to Alaska, is a sign of how hard the White House will push during Obama's remaining 16 months as president to ensure his fight to address climate change is part of his legacy. Renaming the mountain, which has an elevation of more than 20,000 feet (6,100 meters), makes headlines for his climate quest while also creating goodwill in a state that has not been broadly supportive to the Democratic president. www.huffingtonpost.com...

You can continue to call it Mount McKinley, just like the locals kept referring to it as Denali.

Besides, it will continue to be known around the world as Mount McKinley, thanks to the various editions of Trivial Pursuit.

Do you think the Nepalese and Tibetans wanted to name their mountain Everest?

Denali is a cooler name anyway and McKinley was kind of a dick. He was also pretty much the first US President bought and paid for by the mega-corporations to make sure their interests were protected. Rockefeller, Carnegie, J.P. Morgan, and Vanderbilt owned McKinley.

Anyway this is been going on for forty years, Alaska wanted it to be called Denali, Obama is just rubber stamping that, rather than a bunch of politicos from Ohio telling Alaskans what to do!

It never should have been renamed to begin with. It was Denali first. This is fitting and right.

Well, considering the name wasn't changed to Mt. McKinley until 1917, your comparison is invalid.

Born here, raised here. My parents were both raised and lived their entire lives here. I guess you could call me 2nd generation Alaskan.

The only people who call it "Denali" around here were tourists. The mountain climbers, hunters, and people that I knew all called it "McKinley". Sure, there's "Denali National Park" and the "Denali Highway" -- but the mountain itself was always called McKinley by people I've known.

I've been up on its glaciers, and none of the climbers called it "Denali" ...

I will continue to call it that, since that's what it's always been to me. It's just a name anyway, and if it makes some people happy to have it renamed, I don't care.

McDonald's, however, might have to change the name of the McKinley Mac to "Denali Mac" (It's our version of the Big Mac made with quarter pounder patties and buns).

Isn't Obama such an arrogant commie prick?

I mean, he goes around the country just renaming stuff as he wishes because he think he's some sort of almighty dictator. Next thing you know his face will be on Mount Rushmore....which will be renamed to Mount Barrack!

Oh, what's that you say? He's not renaming Mount McKinley and is recognizing the will of the people in the state of Alaska? Disregard my previous statement.

This is great. Alaskans should be able to name their own damn mountains, especially since Mckinley never set foot in Alaska.

Mt. Denali, it is!

....last time I checked, "Everest" isn't a common word for Tibetans and Nepalese....

And they don't call it "Everest", they call it "Mt. Qomolangma". And that is THEIR business.

Correct.
This kind of thing happens a lot.
Cape Canaveral, Cape Kennedy... than Cape Canaveral again.
Hoover Field became Washington National Airport, only to be renamed Ronald Reagan National Airport later.

Alaska has been attempting to change the name to Denali for decades. However, its attempts to change it at a federal level have been blocked by Ohio, William McKinley's home state.

From the link in the OP. It looks like they finally got what they've been trying to get for decades, is all.

The two names have been used interchangeably -- but as I said no one I know from here (besides maybe the Alaska natives) called it Denali. It's pretty much just a name on a map that's being changed. It doesn't really matter to us up here, as we'll call it whichever one we want -- people will still know what we're talking about.

Oh, and the locals didn't stop calling their town Mauch Chunk when it officially became Jim Thorpe, PA. I would bet that it has always been Denali to the native Alaskans.

Well isn't it obvious why Obama is jumping on an opportunity with this?

McKinley was a Republican !!!

All part of the ongoing "deRepublicanation" program.

Well, considering the name wasn't changed to Mt. McKinley until 1917, your comparison is invalid.

What?
Please elaborate....
The naming convention scenario is identical....
Both of the "namers" are children of the west and both the Spanish and Americans were naming lands for which names already existed in indigenous tongues....
Those ascribing the names in both cases each did so in deference to their own sensibilities without thought or consideration of the occupying people who they meaned to govern and supplant.

When is the cutoff acceptable for you when naming geography: 1500, 1600, 1900???

Of course not. It's just easier to blame Obama and be outraged than to actually do independent research and get to the REAL bottom of what's going on.
