Ukraine signs EU deal that sparked months of upheaval

Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova have signed partnership agreements with the European Union, in a move strongly opposed by Russia.

~BBC

Brussels, Belgium (CNN) -- Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko signed a cooperation agreement with the European Union on Friday, the same deal whose reversal set off a crisis in the nation.
His predecessor's decision to shun the deal last year and work with Russia instead unleashed deadly strife that led to the ouster of the nation's President, the loss of Crimea and a pro-Russia separatist rebellion.
The EU-Ukraine Association Agreement calls for a free trade zone and for Ukraine to adhere to European values such as democracy and human rights. It will allow for the country to participate in common border protection and security processes.
In remarks before the signing, the president of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, also remembered those who died in Ukraine.
"In Kiev and elsewhere, people gave their lives for this closer link to the European Union," he said. "We will not forget this."

Van Rompuy said that closer political and economic ties would bring greater security, stability and prosperity to Ukraine and the two other former Soviet states also signing EU Association Agreements on Friday, Georgia and Moldova.

What do you think?

Russia has warned these "measures" could include $500 billion in lost trade and possible bans on Ukrainian imports.
In order to fully implement the free trade zone, it could cost Ukraine’s already fragile economy $104 billion, according to a previous estimate by Yanukovich. This will include adopting hundreds of new trade laws and thousands of new laws to comply with EU standards.

BOOM. Ukraine fires shot over the bow.

Russia needs to learn the USSR is gone, and the stick isn't working any more.

Well Duh, didn't we (west) manufacture the revolution, armed resistance and subsequent crisis? Putin flinched at the border and staved off WWIII or Armageddon.....however you'd like to read it.

With Ukraine firmly in the pocket of western influence, Putin repealing war powers vis-a-vis Ukraine, leaves all eyes on Syria. Although Russia should be highly concerned with NATO now firmly butted against the bear, its focus is likely on something far more important.......Syria. If Syria falls to the west, so will Iran. If Russia's S-300 S2A missiles can be bested there, than they can in motherland Russia.

The west will have unbridled and unchecked power as eyes turn to Asia.

There are nations that welcomed EU deals and inclusivity only to find it was more snake oil dressed as gift horse and they ended up worse off for it.

I could caption those guys:

Ukraine: ''mmmmm gift horse''

EU guy: ''mmmmm Russian oil pipelines''

EU guy 2: ''hahaha they fell for the gift horse thing''

It could cost Ukraine so much, they are indebted to Russia, there are vast Russian oil pipelines running through Ukraine and agreements that this EU deal could affect.

Sometimes the grass isn't greener.

Well good luck to them with that. Poland after all said that they feel like they had to give the USA oral sex since joining the UE. can't wait to see how Ukraine feels in a couple of years.

Looks like the international corporations are finally going to get what they want; millions of Walmart and Mcdonalds customers, a nation in debt for the loans (to the elite) and western military bases to look down Russia and China's throat.

How Austere.

I feel bad for Ukraine. They feel so special and so important right now. They have the leaders of the Free World calling them on the phone to ask how they are doing and if there is anything they can be helped further with. It's a powerful drug to become drunk from, I'm sure.

It always starts this way....

Just wait until the haircuts come later, and explanations about 'giving for the whole' or 'taking one for the EU team' and 'We're in it together!'....which is NEVER said when it's actually a POSITIVE observation being made.

I hope they enjoy every day of their celebration.....because the long term EU reality seems less than jovial for those who don't form the direct core of it.

This is just a setup from the west to trick Ukraine to go to war with russia under the pretext that west with NATO will give Ukraine support/help. And this will in the end lead to some kind of greater conflict so that profit can be made.

This is just like the years before world war 2 where Germany time and time again tried to solve the Danzig corridor issue thru diplomatic solutions with Poland. After several generous offers from Germany was ignored they started to show their teeth. However, Brittain spread disinformation to the Polish leaders, saying Germanys army was a joke and wouldnt stand a chance against the Polish army, and of course they would have full support from Brittain would it come a armed conflict between the two countries.

So Poland ignored Germany, based on the Brittish intelligence they got. Intelligence that was fabricated to start the second world war.

The Unknown history of the German-Polish conflict in 1939

This is a basic setup for war, constructed by west with promisses to Ukraine of "no harm will be done to you" when in fact its very likely Russia will stand by its word.

Profit man, its all about profits.

True that! Banks always win... they will eventually fund both sides as always, so no matter who wins, banks win either way.

Well, I bet that all those people who said that Putin is a brilliant strongman feel pretty stupid right now.
I think I read that Russia just entered a recession because of Putin and his posturing. I need to check it out.

This is a marathon. Not a sprint. If people beyond the Ukrainians are celebrating today? Putin will be quietly laughing.

This game is far far from a clear outcome as it plays out across more than one nation and world region right now.

As they say...It's not over until the fat lady sings, and the big babushka is a ways off carrying a fair tune yet.

We live in 'post 1984' era, in which we can't say there exists a credible source anymore.

Orwellian state(s) support(s) Newspeak and Doublethink, where information, meanings and even words are crooked, muddly and vague.
This is an actual despair really. You have to choose what you want to believe, but you can't ask for sources any more... you would accept CNN as a source for these affairs? I wouldn't.

Everything may be fabricated, ...or may not be.
*sigh*
