Moscow to demand $20 bn from Ukraine, if it brings back ‘zero option’
“Ukraine took obligations to transfer, and the Russian Federation to accept the obligation for payment of Ukraine’s share of external public debt of the USSR as of December 1, 1994. At that time this share amounted to $6.8 billion. Now the sum is close to $20 billion,” says Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).
RT
Thats funny now Russia is trying to use blackmail. However i dont think it would hold up in court so its irrelevant. Because if they go back to zero option they would also have to return all assets they took out of Ukraine as well and pay interest on them including a large portion of their military bases and the black sea fleet. But im sure that would all come out in the court case but what is enlightening is there trying to get Ukraine to agree that Crimea is now part of Russia.
If I agree to buy an item, then I have a disagreemnt with the company, then decide to stop paying for it and the company comes asking for the money, am I right or wrong? Are they right or wrong?
Clue: I am wrong, they are right.

Weird analogy in this case Russia had debt upon the breakup of the Soviet Union there argument is essentially we took on this debt and didnt charge the satellite countries when they left. The problem is they agreed to take on this debt in exchange for their stuff they took back to Russia so im not sure if your analogy is close to applying here at all.
The State Duma has passed a motion suggesting the US President and the EU imposed sanctions on all who voted for it, defying western pressure just hours before Russia and Crimea signed a federation treaty.
Various reports on Twitter coming through now of Russian military snipers shooting at a Ukrainian military base in Simferopol. Snipers are believed to be in a nearby building shooting from windows. I can't believe how patient the Ukrainian military have been but maybe that will change now.

Russia's annexation of Crimea can't be accepted by the international community including Poland. In one moment this changes the country's (Ukraine) borders and the geopolitical situation in this region of the world," Tusk said at a joint news conference with U.S. Vice President Joe Biden.
I am just checking the Ukraine Defence Ministry website now for anything official as multiple tweets have said CNN are reporting this and have confirmed it when they haven't.
@grasswire - Armed, masked men fired guns at Ukraine navigational base in Semfiropol,Crimea. At least 1 Ukrainian officer wounded - Ukr. Defense Ministry.
"I heard voices of disappointment in the region. I was in Singapore and heard disappointment about China getting stronger and the US getting weaker," Yaalon said.
"Look what's happening in Ukraine, where the United States is demonstrating weakness, unfortunately," he continued.
