Why should Ukraine be forced to split its country in order to appease a Russian government bent on returning to the Soviet union and its republics?

Hard to tell from the video if it is legit, or just film of training exercises. With that said, the fact that the fibre optic lines into the Crimea region have been severed, and that the airport has been shut down until 17:00 local time Saturday suggests that something heavy is going down. Air superiority in the region and control of communications could mean that a front is being established forward of the Crimean area, say at the Kherson line. Fuel shipments to the port were cut off, and they should be looking at a blackout of power from supply issues any time now.

Definitely worth keeping an eye on. I personally am with Russia on this one, but with close friends in the Ukraine, it hurts to see war come to those beautiful people.

Do you believe in the right to self determination?

When done freely and fairly yes and when taking into account history. What I don't advocate is a stealth invasion by encouraging immigration to a sovereign country only to use those groups down the line in an effort to break up / control a country. If people are so fond of Russia who like in the CRimea, they have a choice. Stay in Ukraine or move back to Russia.

Tell that to the largest pro-Russian voting block. The people that were there before the Russians or the Ukrainians...the Tartars.

Citizens should adapt to the country they have moved to instead of demanding the country adapt to them.

Very easy to state when your country has never been invaded by either side.

Semi Autonomous that is sovereign territory of Ukraine. Again trying to split hairs wont justify the action from Russia.

Allowing a population to take control of their own territory as they see fit doesn't require justification.

The people of the Falkland Islands voted to remain a part of the UK.
If you want to use the Falklands as an example though lets. Argentina is Russia in that scenario, demanding territory they lost and think they are entitled to.

Actually, by your own definition, the 'Argentina' would currently be the Ukraine.

Did the people of Ukraine get an option when they were part of the USSR?

Did anybody in Crimea get an option after?

Lets for the sake of the world, hope the Russians only stay inside Crimea. But the response of the Ukrainian military will give us the idea what happens next.

This info makes sense, why the Russians have been moving in men and equipments all day.

That's the flaw in your argument.

The only way to appose Russia is to go to war? I haven't read one reply so far NOT ONE advocating war with Russia over the Ukraine. However, I HAVE seen plenty of people defending and justifying Russia's bullying and the stealing of land that belongs to another country.

What makes this strange is that in the Crimea, from the pictures on the BBC, the locals and the police have accepted this group of unmarked soldiers (dont know why they dont have russian markings?) and seemingly just carried on. The BBC speculate that russia may compare to NATO intervention for Albanians in Serbia and say they are protecting their own people. To date, no shots have been fired in anger.
As the beeb pointed out though- NATO went in to stop ethnic cleansing in Albania, so the comparison is wrong, We will have to see how this develops.
