AAAARGH - You, Your & You're. English 101

You - Yes you, and me. Example: "Can you help me?"

Your - Possesive. Example: "Is that your toothbrush?"

You're - Abbreviation of 'you are'. Example: "You're an idiot."

Now, how not to do it.

"Can I borrow you're toothbrush?" - or, in English, "Can I borrow you are toothbrush?"

"Your an idiot!" - or, again in English, "This is your 'an idiot''", or, "an idiot belonging to you."

My pet peeve is incorrect spelling in the subject line.
The body of the post doesn't bother me so much, because I know
sometimes fingers are flying...But, get the headline correct....

This rather bizarre affliction happens to awl of us sometimes. Eye first noticed it about too months after coming hear.

Aye remember thee most embarrasing case of it occurred when eye rote an email two Senator John McCain...that's when aye learned once ewe spend any thyme on ATS, it is most necessary too ALWAYS use you're grammar and spell checker.

Know worries, though. It comes and goes!

I can see you are point there. What the 'really saying' belonging to you is that there is no point in getting all hot and bothered about it as it will inevitably get right on you are nerves.

Ha, it's so true though, isn't it? You know what annoys me? When my fellow peers (i.e. teenagers) use stooooopid abreviations like 'da' and 'r u?'. For the majority they are NOT gangster rapper's, do not posess the same amount of cool as moi and your fingers are in correct working order. Text message, ok because it costs, online NO!!!! *and breathe* ok where were we...

i'm from germany and my english is not so good, but when i read some
posts here on ats, i'm shocked that many people can't spell right or
it seems they doesn't know grammar....

Its the incorrect use of apostrophe's that get's to me!

Maybe we should start our own spelling and grammar police for ATS. What with it seeming to get more & more 'high profile' as each day passes, surely there is good cause for a 'Deny Spelling Atrocities' division to patrol the fora keeping people in check.

The one problem with being a stickler of the English language, and also having a major problem with 'Emoticons' (or whatever they are called,) is that there is not an appropriate parenthesis for displaying that you are joking. Suffice to say that my 'Spelling Police' quip was merely that, a quip.

Quip or no quip, I was shutting the proverbial 'door' before it was opened. Kind of like the Pandora's Box 'thingy'....

My, oh, my, if you people that are english first language have problem with the language, imagine me...............sometimes I feel so frustrated when somebody wants to get at me for my mispellings.


I you think english is a hard language try learning spanish we do not have a verb to be, and all our vowels are long sound vowels. Plus we have female and male version of most words.

There is so much slang, its hard to make everyone happy.

I have no problems with the spelling.... I know that I am a terrible speller.

I have noticed lately however, the grammar used here and on other boards is bad at times.

Often when I see grammar mistakes, I wonder the age of the person who is writing. Probably someone young, which then makes me wonder, oh my, these are our future leaders.

I am quite sure that I too have used incorrect grammar on here, so when I see someone else do it, I just try to let it go and hope that they are seeing their own mistakes and will try to do better next time.

Oh, and another thing.

How hard is it to type 'you' rather than 'u'?

OK, commonly misspelled words, I can deal with. Typos, I can deal with. Even *some* grammatical errors, I can deal with.

But here's what I CANNOT DEAL WITH...EVER!

Wait! "box" is correct.

Ok, back on track-
