The taser does not have to be taken away from the cops, the cops just need to be educated and screened on intelligence.

When they've been educated and screened they can have them back

An 11 year old girl wondering the highway, in the nude, is quite strange and the LEO probably suspected mental illness or drug intoxication. What is he to do to subdue her? Incapacitate her so he doesn't get bit or scratched. Although cruel, what other options are there, animal snare?

He can wrap his arms around her and lift her and deposit her into the safety of his police car, cover her with a blanket from his trunk until a female officer can come and escort her. Common sense.

No, he's supposed to get a blanket, and get bit and scratched. That's what police are paid to do, put themselves in harms way to protect the citizens, that's what they are for, period.

Subduing an unarmed 11 yr old is akin to getting a cat out of a tree as far as equivalent danger is concerned, the animal may scratch or bite you, but you do it anyway cause it is in the best interest of the cat.

You don't shoot it with a taser and watch it fall to the ground cause you were afraid of being bitten or scratched. If you're that afraid of injuring your pretty skin you have no business being there. Get out of the way and let an actual man who understands that sometimes self sacrifice is required to help someone.

The idea that he had no choice because he might get "hurt" is not only offensive to the idea of being a police officer but it is offensive to the entire state of civilization and is no part of a properly functioning society.

YES, you are a police officer you are expected to put your life on the line to save others, just as every other profession like it, you are provided tools to mitigate your own potential of being injured and no one expects you to jump in front of bullets, but to use violence to subdue a confused child who's only means of damaging you would likely break off in your skin after the first scratch is entirely unacceptable and personally I think you should be ashamed for even suggesting the idea.

The cops should use force as a last resort. What kind of possible threat could an 11 year old naked girl pose? These authoritarian a-holes though are too stupid to think of any other method to resolve a situation. Autism is a one illness where "get on the ground!" just isn't going to work. Cops are thugs, respect my authoritah!

You can't give specifics. But you don't call an 11 year old a "young woman" in the news. The most appropriate phrase to use to describe her age would be "juvenile".
Don't make excuses for them, because they don't hold water.

Qualifier: 18 years in news radio.

Safest option is to taze an 11 year old girl huh?
why take the risk of a possible altercation with a nude child? Safest option is to taze. In my opinion it's not that law enforcement is uneducated about taser use its sheer laziness and the 80% chance that they will get away with it. Police officers have each others back and will defend even when in the wrong.

Ever notice when there's a controversial case about police, the officers in question are usually given paid suspension and take a little time off then end up right back on the force with just a slap on the wrist?

They need to do better background checks on the cops they hire. This on has a screw lose for sure. I wonder how many people like this cop are wearing a badge these days?

It doesn't matter anymore...popular opinion is that folks who call or see cops coming don't say "I hope that good cop comes" They say " oh great here comes those arseholes..." So at this point and time the respect for law enforcement no longer exists and as we all know respect is hard to maintain but once lost its even harder or as in most cases its impossible to gain it back...So hiring good cops is not the answer, and is that even possible to do? I don't know what if anything can be done...well I do know exactly what needs to be done but I can't say that without it coming across as a terrorist threat...

Why does nobody believe me when I state that 90% of all American cops have sub nominal IQs to do their job. Maybe it's cause I'm stating the obvious.

Where is the moderation on this? This is from June 22, or somewhere thereabout. I read about this on this issue on this same forum about June 22.

For those being aware about this for the first time and happen to live in the USA. Enjoy your lives in the best place to live on Earth. Land of the free, home of the brave etc.

he probally tased her because he would get in less trouble tasing her than putting his hands on a naked 11 year old girl.

No doubt if people still called the police to get cats out of trees they'd just taser it anyway. Why take the chance when you have that nifty little toy do do all the work for you?

Yeah, if anyone would actually try to help I am sure there would have been a sexual misconduct trial and lawsuit.

This is the world we live in people.

At least the taxi driver was smart and just called the 'authorities'. If he would have tried to actually get her in the car you'd all be screaming PEDO.

No, hes a police officer, its what you would expect. It would only be people with a very twisted mindset, brainwashed by the media to be scared of all the paedophiles(govt has its fair share of those, but you dont hear about that).
That for any man EVEN a POLICE MAN to be helping a child that is very obviously in trouble to be thought of as a paedophile is testament to not only the power of mass media, but to how low society has come.

when he looked down and realized hes not wearing a coat due to it being summer, he probably freaked out and his arm naturally jerked out his taser and tased the air in front of him. Unfortunately she was standing there.

This is a natural reaction if cops ingest to many donuts and coffee.
