If I gave you the impression that only the English enslaved the Irish, that was not my intent. The fact is I was dealing with white slavery in America and the English focused on Irish Catholics at one point to get them out of Ireland and stop the attacks against the English. It makes me wonder if the IRA was not partly brought about because of this history. I have never been to Ireland. I have known many Irish, but I have not asked them about the animosity that seemed to be prevalent years back between the Protestant Irish and the Catholic Irish. I don't even know if it remains today. It probably does as we love to lick our wounds.

Yes, but mainly untaught history. I truly wish we could understand the suffering of all people worldwide even today, and stop this constant race baiting. At what point to do we simply just stop it?

This is the history also of The British Isles.
It's taught in British Schools. I knew about the Irish Catholics being sent to The New World back in the 1960's. It appears that American history taught in your schools doesn't teach this.

I am happy that you have learn something that you did not previously know. However I acknowledge that that was a brutal time. However black racism was significantly different because it was iniated due to the doctrine of white supremacy. White supremacy continued long after the the end of slavery. Given the racial profile of class in America only idiots would equate White supremacy with Black supremacy IMO.

This is not equality, it is reverse racism. Or maybe the racially mixed are still getting a raw deal, as we have a racially mixed person in Zimmerman having white and Hispanic, but wait our POTUS is mixed too, and he's siding with a not mixed family on this.

I am aware of the plight of the Irish and their oppression, the potato famine and many other cultures, there are a lot of myths still out there about the african slave trade and the generally circulated and accepted myth that Africans were selling selling other Africans to the Europeans as the root cause and they were not being cohersed but there is documentation that this was not even fully accurate, to put it bluntly, there is no suffering of any other race than the african slaves and their bondage, so lets not minimize or compare any other ethnicity that either willfully immigrated to North America, it is a black eye, to even begin to put others in the same sentence or compare them.

But to really get a grasp and compare these two tragedies, the African Slave trade is unequaled in it's reach and brutality and nothing in at least the last 500 or so years even compares to it.

The middle passage is what you need to read about, no one can even count the numbers which by all estimates, were in the millions either murdered, died of disease, neglect or famine en route to America from Africa, so you have hell in chains on the ships to America and other countries, and if they made it, hell in America and other destinations because they would not be considered even human, but property.

Most other non indigenous people of America were willful immigrants, the greater proportion of Americans that can trace their ancestry to slavery were not immigrants.


I feel for you and fully respect your past or if you had someone affected by what you described OP but you can do your research nothing compares to the systematic mass mind control, genocide of the African Slave Trade, there is nothing in the records of history and slavery that can compare when it comes to the numbers and when it comes to the method of delivery of the human cargo via slaveship to America and other destinations.

I will agree with you that Slavery was not just an African or Black phenomenon, this makes for a good read just to really detail the history of Slavery all the way from the time of the Code of Hammurabi and the last country, Mauritania to abolish it legally.

I'm sure if I traced my own lineage far enough, I could find some sort of slavery or servitude somewhere, but that in no way gives me the right to start speaking for all people that have been slaves. I was born in America and our history is laced with white supremacy. I accept that.

You have no concept of white supremacy. Actually it is a unifying factor across al major political parties because it a person conviction. it is the endemic expectation in a significant number of white individuals in any group. It is in fact the assumed asssumption that is so endemic that is is a norm that you are completely unaware of given the quality of your response.

Just throwing my personal experience into the mix here, but I went to public school and yes, we did cover Irish slavery in my high school history classes (About four years ago now, if you're curious).

It was mentioned when discussing the Union-Pacific railroad's construction and again the next year while discussing discrimination throughout the US' history. Albeit, it was covered much, much less thoroughly than African slavery or discrimination towards women, I just felt like I should point out it IS indeed taught today, but I do feel it should be covered more than it is, and only part of me feels that way because of my 75% Irish heritage.
