White House locked down because of 'smoking objects'

www.politico.com

The White House was locked down Tuesday night because of “smoking objects” found near the North Portico as hundreds of protesters rallied outside the executive mansion, Secret Service officials said.

“We had approximately 1,000 to 1,500 protesters from Occupy DC on the fenceline. There were no arrests but what we believe … was a smoke bomb was thrown over the fence,” said Secret Service spokesman George Ogilvie.

well if Pres Obama needed a wake up call here it could be, the president seems to be of the opinion that these protests are the result of a fringr group...... wake up Barack, america is calling out for a change.

This is a frightening development, was it really Occupy protesters, or was it more sinister, maybe a test of White House proceedures?

Lets hope this gets the proper coverage by the press.

Smoke bomb was thrown over the gate it seems and apparently the OWS protesters are at fault, according to Fox

A group of over 1,000 far left #occupy protesters chucked smoke bombs over the fence tonight forcing the White House to go on lockdown. Reporters were escorted to the basement due to the attack.

Probably nothing more than some dipstick tossing a smoke bomb over the fence. But, with law enforcement like it is nowadays, sounds like a great way to get shot multiple times.

Instead of smoke bombs, maybe the Occupy guys would get their point across better by throwing genetically modified seeds into the Obama family's GMO free, organic garden.

That would be a nice response to all of the lobbying that gives Monsanto the power to control our food supply. Let's see how they like it when they are forced to choke down poison.

I bet someone got caught by his wife smoking out back again.
He probably flicked a lit butt into a trash can.

america is calling out for a change.

1,500 people is hardly "America"...........

I am tired of these "protesters" speaking for me

Also the smoke bomb thing is a good way to get bad publicity................

But obviously the "protesters" are not that bright.

My Friend is down there. He is on his way home now. He said that someone threw a smoke bomb and everyone thought it was tear gas so they ran.

No idea why they did that.... they are going to be stalked by the SS now...

thanks, its not being mentioned on the news, but Sky News has it running along the bottom of the screen as breaking news from Reuters.

Its not a totally unexpected development, this many people protesting in so many places surely cant be ignored forever?

I will admit that my first thought was a set up, giving the administration an excuse to crack down on the occupy movement.

Out of fear of permanent detention without a trial, I will refrain from saying ANYTHING in response to this

OK, so as an American, are you happy with the direction of the country? Do you think the current President has done anything to make your life and the overall state of the country any better?

Well I am glad that somebody else is doing the job of protesting while I keep my fat butt in my home doing anything but complain in front of a computer in web sites where all we do is complain and do nothing else.

I applaud the braves people that dare to do what I don't.
they are the true heros in this nation, me I am just a armchair warrior.

I'm awfully glad to finally hear Occupy is visiting the White House in numbers and force. Now onto the Capital and Super-Court. Just make it a 3-way rotation with a day dedicated to each on a constantly rotating basis. That should have them ALL about ready to cry uncle or just shoot people inside a month!

In all seriousness though... I LOVE seeing this happen and it's what I've been calling for. At the same time...the grown ups with child intellect and the anarchists looking to start violence need REMOVED. Not talked to..not warned..but OUTRIGHT REMOVED from Occupy if Washington is now the focus.

In the cities, the cops would play with you guys. They'd raid again and again and if Occupy fought? They'd be good sports and fight back. Washington is a whole new ballgame. If Occupy jumps the White House fence to make it to the building, it wouldn't even raise my eyebrows to hear the Secret Service simply opened fire and killed every last protester inside the fence line. They aren't paid to play with people and they don't draw their guns to "cover" someone. If the Secret Service pulls a gun, they fully intend to kill someone in the next few seconds...

I just pray for the Occupy people..however I feel about some of the elements. We're all Americans at the end of the day, after all.
Just don't let the idiots get good people shot when nothing of the sort ever had to happen to anyone. One STUPID move at the White House or Capital is all it may take for tragedy.

The story just does not make sense to me.
I don't believe the protesters would throw smoke bombs now after all this time.
