A scared and confused mother wants to ban something she thinks is bad for... the children??!??!!

Im not surprised FEAR governs the actions of many. Her own lack of understanding wants to force that fear upon others. Fear is the ignorance we should deny. (See notes on covid)

Did the metal and prog stuff. Still listen to it occasionally. Seen opeth and mastodon live. Lol and and dethklok at the same show. Was into death metal for a bit, seen cannibal corpse, got scarred up during a necrophagist, dying fetus show. That stuffs too much for me now. Last time i was in a mosh pit was for ska fest a couple years ago. I can't keep up with the kids these days man. Body's too sore.

Opeth and Mastodon, good bands to see!, I hear ya on keeping up with the kids..been a few times at shows, me and my bud look around, and feel just a tad out of place, and no go on the mosh pit..just about got crushed at Lamb Of God

I never moshed until I was 23 or 24, then at a Gigantour show, during Lamb Of God’s last song (it wasn’t “Black Label” where they do the Wall Of Death, they had already stopped doing that) I decided to run out into the pits. Then it became my thing, I’d get pretty hammered through a show and run into the pit for the last song of the night.

I’ve seen LoG...man, 6 or 7 times now? One of my favorite bands! Over the last 9 months the guitarist, Mark, has been on an anti-Trump tear on Twitter. The amount of fans that came at him, “Stick to playing guitar, I don’t want politics in my music.”, which is HILARIOUS. New American Gospel and Ashes Of The Wake are 99.8% political and 100% anti-Bush/war.

Huge Mastodon fan as well. The more 70’s prog they get, the more I love them. The last 4 albums have been f*cking PERFECT. I grew up on Dream Theater and Vai, but I’m a bit shredded out these days. I still keep that stuff in my back pocket as a player, but my days of woodshedding with a metronome are long over.

I shared a couple tunes last night with GuiltyGuitarist that are going to be on the album I hope to have finished around the new year, if ya want to check them out, have at it-

First one definitely has some Mastodon/Pantera/LoG influence, no vocals on this one-
soundcloud.app.goo.gl...

This one is a bit more Tool-inspired, with vocals-
soundcloud.app.goo.gl...

This one is me ripping off Floyd as much as I can without actually playing one of their songs, still tweaking the vocals-
soundcloud.com.../s-PVD9YALlq69

This one is getting entirely re-recorded as I did it when I was first getting the hang of recording on my own and my gear has gone through a LOT of upgrades since, but there’s some flashy shred stuff in the solo where I borrow some Dimebag/Petrucci licks (and surprised myself by getting some Chris Cornell vibes in the last chorus)-
soundcloud.app.goo.gl...

I’ve quit playing in bands about 5 years ago because I was sick of being just the singer or just the guitar player. I play every instrument and write a LOT faster on my own than 5 guys sitting in a room working on one song for months at a time. Set up a studio in my house and taught myself how to engineer/produce. It’s so much more gratifying than any band situation I’ve ever been in.

Shameless promotion over!
—————————————————————————————————————————————————— ————————-

I’m also surprised 1984 isn’t involved in this, but I predict that and Fahrenheit 451 will be going down at some point as well.

If the DNC doesn’t want to get swallowed up in an authoritarian/pro-censorship blanket, they need to get a grasp on the progressives, who are doing all they can to show everyone they’re the opposite of progression. I suspect this BS is exactly what prevented any form of blue wave. Not even my lefty friends are down with this bullsh*t.

I'm just surprised the list doesn't include 1984, Brave New World, or Atlas Shrugged.

You might be surprised. They may be teaching those not as dystopian novels but as Utopian works about the perfect society. It's sort of like North Korea teaching the Diary of Anne Frank, but as a cautionary tale about the US.

Book banning is always bad but the real horror will come when they start rewriting problematic books like Orwell predicted. Give the story a totally new meaning, or even an opposite meaning.

Once we start erasing and rewriting or history systematically (it already happens on a small scale) we are doomed. Civilizational Alzheimer's.

However it's the Victorious that write the history books. How accurate can it be? History is always biased.

There are also history books written by a multitude of authors. You can find them if you look. Generally, you can get a pretty good picture that way.

The issue is that schools don't have the luxury of presenting that kind of survey, so school kids only get one text and it might be Zinn for example or another source that leans equally far in another direction.

I'm all for letting all kids read anything they want, But perhaps we should start with the Constitution and Bill of Rights, as required reading.

But as a halfassed futurist...

With the advent of cyber digital technology, the printing of literature and language will be changed forever. And not in a good way, but at least the classics are at everyone's disposal; but will they read it?

That doesn't matter anymore....any kid with a mobile phone can download the most pornographic app they want.

Also there are digital ritual alters to worship any "God" you choose digitally. It's a "Brave New World"

Need a Guru? Pick a flavor and download the app. Kurt Vonnegut was prophetic in his first novel, "Player Piano"

This is nothing new.

US school boards have been keeping the rest of the world entertained with their prescribed book lists for decades.

Here's a brief top ten from the American Library Association

Here's a briefer top fifty

In fact, we even have a Banned Books Week every year.

Sigh.

Another reference to Orwell that has nothing to do with Orwell.

Fancy telling us where he said that? While you're there, where did he ever predict anything?

Re the other posters surprised that Orwell and Fahrenheit 451 weren't banned. They have been. They are. Among other bannings, Orwell was banned by a Florida school board for being pro-communism and F451 was banned by a conservative Texas school board for being anti-Christian.

My Public Library is great. They have a list of these "Banned Books". And they tell you where they are, just in case you want to read them.

Ban things which may be controversial especially if it might be offensive to someone. Don't worry about growing thick skin because we'll just cancel whatever bothers you. Great lesson for the kids.

My goodness. That mindset sets them up for failure. Just wait until real life really does hit them in the face.

Sue to the relevance of the books I'm assuming you're talking about the little black kids don't need it at school because they get enough of it in real life. If that's the case, then stop being legit racist. Black kids aren't so inferior that they some old white lady's sympathy over a few books. They can deal with the world same as you or me.

Is there a demographic label for posters on this site? How can one tell? Is it the grammar used or lack of grammar? That in itself seems a tad racist. Can you guess my demographic?

Thanks, man!

I’m calling the album ‘When I Force This Will’ because the only way I’ve pulled any of this off was sheer force of will, doing things 200x before getting it right and not settling when I’d burn myself out. People often make the assumption that this comes from raw, natural talent and I wish that were the case. It’s been 27 years of not being satisfied!

Just got the new Killer Be Killed! It’s out today! Love the last two albums!

I saw Mastodon on that same tour in Boston! Dethklok opened that show, it was a blast! Caught them again on the Black Diamond Sky tour with Alice In Chains (my 2nd favorite band next to Floyd). Crack The Skye was the only album my wife and I listened to the year it came out. I had to take a break from it because I just wore that one out!

I’ve been wanting to try out a Dominion but I never see them in stores! That white/cream one with gold hardware....mmmmmm. His solo album was awesome and I hope he does more of it, especially the more 90’s sounding hard rock/acoustic stuff. Dude’s a great writer/player and only gets to showcase a portion of that in LoG.

Here’s another link to the Floyd-ish tune, I had it set to private because I’m still tweaking things, but screw it-
soundcloud.app.goo.gl...
————————————————————————————————————————————————

As for the topic, I do hope the parents of students in this school raise their voices. I think they’ll be the only line of defense when it comes to this stuff. The breaks need to be slammed on this erasing of history before too much of it is gone. The rest of the country will hopefully see that this crowd trying to erase or cancel everything will never be satisfied and I suspect there’s some law of diminishing returns involved with their shtick, they won’t be happy with a statue here and there and they’ll need bigger things to satisfy their thirst for “justice”.

I remember when the evangelical right came for the Harry Potter books. So I guess that this kind of thing isn't limited to one group or another.

Reminds me of the catcher and the rye being prohibited in schools.

I was excited to read it when i was a teen and was suprised to learn it was not controversial at all.

It's just another case of parents overreacting.

Far worse stuff online, yet i doubt they're banning their kids phones or ipads.

If you're going to ban anything, ban acces to online (besides school) until their older. They had a guy commit suicide live on tiktok and that video was passed around for awhile before being taken down. I bet thousands of kids saw that.

Books compare nothing to that..
