Anybody ever see that Stephen King movie called THE MIST? This sounds just like that... lol

Looks like any CERN Doom porn can be delayed for a few days or even weeks. A short circuit in one of the many electromagnets is going to delay proceedings for a few days to possibly weeks due to difficulty of repairs - see article linked to below:
BBC News - LHC Restart: Short Circuit

Sabotage?

It's been offline for some time for maintenance and all circuits have been tested during this time.

How do you detect something that wont even let light escape . Wow look at that , there's a nothing .

We are far too small to make any significant impact on the universe. Even the most minute, almost invisible, basically non-existant impact... We wouldn't manage. All we can do is kill ourselves. Hell, we couldn't even destroy the planet we live on. We could try, but again we would just kill ourselves, the planet would eventually heal and we would long be forgotten. The LHC is nothing but a fart in time and nothing but an exciting tool for scientists and those watching. Those who think we could destroy anything outside of a few square miles with the LHC have far too vivid an imagination.

Know this for certain? or just think that?

As someone who is working on a comparatively much simpler and smaller particle physics experiment, you will be surprised about how often something you tested and certified working and operational in one location, no longer works when you install it. This includes shorts such as this.

In the biggest 'scheme of things' we should not be playing around in our universe's backyard ( or someone else's universe) this way...WHY doesn't anyone of authority acknowledge this, and dispute it? So many things are done without people's consent or vote until after the facts...I just don't agree or get it?

Do I know what for certain?

That it was sabotage? No of course not.

That it has been offline for sometime and each circuit has been tested during this time? Yes, because it states it in a link someone posted earlier in the thread.

Just that it is not all that unusual for things to change... the accelerator is composed of super conducting magnets, it is not all that hard to imagine things being moved around a bit as the thing is cooled down. This can easily cause electrical issues.

Also can have other things going on, such as generating a slightly acidic environment underground in the tunnels and possibly having advanced corrosion on equipment for example.

On why no one has a say? Well in reality they do have a say, but the point is the following

1) The lay person doesn't attempt to understand the science being investigated, opinions thus do not carry much weight
2) The lay person who complains about blackholes alternative universes etc... see point number 1)
3) The funding is provided by many many many nations, Europe being the top investor. So external 'prostest' will be accepted with even less weight
4) The media keep publishing things that can only be described as... sensationalist, and yet the media people writing these stories fall into category number 1

What I am really saying is, you shouldn't be all that 'worried' because in reality you cannot give anything more than a loose oppinion based on 'believing' something bad will happen based upon something you read that you dont even know is true or not.

When you actually understand what they are doing, you will see that, there is nothing to fear. Seriously... if what people say here is true, the Earth would be getting smacked by microblackholes at a rate of about 1 per km^2 per hr or something along that lines. Why? Well because protons smack into the upper atmosphere at an extremely high rate... and not only that, but also at energies ranging from almost nothing, right up to 1000's of times greater than the LHC.

So come on people lets get a grip

This news is exciting.
If the scientists there know what they are doing, then we'll be fine and believe me, they do know. Our knowledge about Universe is really limited, so something might go wrong. It might or might not be an extinction level event, but at the end of the day, we will learn something new about our Universe and that is what matters most.

I personally prefer the event in which we stumble upon something, which will enable us to time travel or even find our alternate selves(Alternate Universe). I hope someone is as smart as Walter Bishop and continue the experiment instead of stopping in the name of god or moral choice.

What can go wrong..are "we" really that dumb ?! I can't believe people would actually try this beacause i don't think we are that technologically advanced to attempt this in the first place and even if we accidentally discover something we wouldn't know what to "do with it". I know most if not all of the greatest discoveries were made like that, poking the unknown, but one of these days this habbit of ours will be our demise.

Ok, I feel the need to ask, what precisely do you think the LHC does? I'm not asking to be rude or insulting. I am genuinely trying to get a good idea of your grasp of the science behind it.

Walter Bishop was the only character I can recall who could both bring me to tears of sadness and sympathy, and literally cringe in fear. That show would not have made it through the first season without Walter having been written so well, and then portrayed so amazingly by John Noble.

I apologize in advance for this statement, because I simply cannot think of a way to express it without sounding condescending. And please know, this isn't specifically directed to you, I just thought your post illustrated the point I wish to make rather well.

Just because you do not understand the technology or processes behind the LHC, it absolutely does not mean that nobody else does either. The same goes for any valid risks associated with the work they are doing there. The people that designed, built and operate the LHC have dedicated their entire educational and professional lives to the theory and application of what they are doing. Articles like the one in the OP are meant to gain reader attention by taking a small bit of truth, taking it completely out of context, and blowing it way out of proportion. In this case they have taken one tiny and relatively unlikely part of one theory and made it sound frightening to do exactly what they managed to accomplish. They got your attention, planted a seed of worry in your mind, and are now hoping you access their site for more grossly distorted scientific 'information' so they can increase their ad revenue.
Look, I'm not a physicist, and I don't claim to understand the specifics of the LHC nearly as well as the people that do this kind of thing for a living. But, I have taken the time to research it, among a great many other things, so that I can appreciate the value of what it does and the results it generates. And in doing so, I have a decent grasp of exactly what is happening in the machine. And what is theoretically possible. As a result, I understand that it is not some mysterious doom machine. It's basically just a series of strong electromagnets that throws little pieces of gold atoms at each other at incredibly high speeds to see what really really really tiny stuff is inside the really really tiny stuff.

So what your saying, is by smashing the smallest particles to ever exist together, a bunch of tiny magic happens and we end up making contact with a parallel universe? yeeeaaaaaa...

I bet they find smaller particles and then they have to build a bigger machine, and that machine will find even smaller particles, and then a bigger machine to find even smaller particles, and a even bigger one to find super small particles...

This is a waste of time and money. Figure out the worlds countless problems first.

Scientists know what they are doing that's why they need the worlds most powerful machines to fact check......

Or they are dabbling into unknown forces that may kill us all.

this is actually something they are in fact checking. no it's not just some idea some kook with glossalalia on a conspiracy site blurbled out. they are gonna check to see if there are extra dimensions in the universe and if so how big they are.

For the above post: the existence of certain particles require extra dimensions. so if they find these predicted particles they will then have good evidence the extra dimensions exist. and based on the particles measured mass and other things verses the theory that predicted them they will know the extent of the extra dimensions.

Also- this has nothing at all to do with any quantum level black holes they may create. Personally I am hoping for microscopic wormholes rather than black holes.
