I like Pawn Stars. Does that mean I'm officially 'old' now?

You like watching porn stars? I don't have cable or satellite TV. What is pawn stars.

Pawn Stars. A family in Las Vegas runs a pawn shop. Grandpa. Dad. Son. And sons' best friend. The show has people bringing in things they are selling, and the pawn shop owners talk about the things. Lots of historical things. Americana. Odds and ends.

I'm watching a marathon today.

What they had come in the shop today - A personal submarine; a gangsters ring (mob 'godfather' for the whole country); Steve McQueen poster (turned out to be fake), silver certificates, civil war rifle, a home made scooter (the pawn shop turned it down), a spittoon (worth 45$), a spoon made by Paul Revere, a Ringo Star doll, a tricycle from the 1800s, a garden canon (the guy thought it was real, but it wasn't) ... things like that. Lots of different kinds of things.

I'm glad you are enjoying the show but it's all bunk and hokum. scripted, rehearsed, edited and phony as a 3 dollar bill. My bet is that most of that stuff being pawned is from a prop house.
I'm currently working on a "Reality" show pilot and have worked on others as well as DP and AD. I hope mine are as successful as Duck Dynasty but that's asking for a lot.

My dear, old is when you watch Antiques Roadshow because it reminds you of the happy days of your life.

Now me, I feel old...first thing on tv in the am is the weather network, followed by cbc radio. Sad but true.

Look at the top of page two of this thread. I described it for someone who asked the same thing.

.first thing on tv in the am is the weather network,

I do the same thing ... but this morning I turned on the Weather Channel and it was GONE. It was replaced by some oldies repeat station - My Three Sons was showing. The Weather Channel took a turn for the worse when NBC took it over. It got political. But still ... I was surprised that it's gone from our cable network. I'll have to watch local weather now.

I know reality tv shows are heavily scripted. But I"m thinking the stuff coming into the pawn shop is real. I'm sure that a bunch of folks have things to bring in and they have to be interviewed for the show or something. But it's still interesting stuff ....

I tried to watch the Home Shopping Network a handful of times. I couldn't do it. It just wasn't 'me'.

Okay ... so 'old people tv' ... golf, fishing, bowling and antiques roadshow.
I think I"m safe. I don't watch any of those.

The wife and I went to Vegas before Christmas this year and actually visited Gold and Silver Pawn, got to meet Rick and Chumlee and watch a bit of the show being taped. It looked totally legit to me. People were coming in selling stuff the whole time we were there. If you're ever in Vegas give them a look...it was cool to see all the stuff in there....and if you look around you can find some decent deals on stuff. Worth the trip.

I am twenty-one years young and very much enjoy Pawn Stars. I've been around antique items all of my life though because my neighbors used to run an antique shop out of their house. My mother would also take me to a lot of estate sales and different auction houses so I've been around that stuff all my life. It's all very fascinating and awesome to me and has always been a big part of life. I'm sure you're just fine in watching Pawn Stars.

Yeah...but you didnt tell us if you watch the same episodes over and over again like they were new ones?

My late mother used to tell me she watched "that show again....they have the same guests on it every night! Every night! I dont know WHY they dont have on anyone else?"...

I told her..."Mom? Thats not a show...its called an INFO-MERCIAL!". She faithfully was watching that 1/2 hr "show" night after night after night!

So...Im hoping you are not..

PS Have you seen HARDCORE PAWN from Detroit? Thats a good one too....

I am 27 myself, and have occasionally watched the show. Maybe 10 episodes since they've been on the air, lol. Here is how I feel about ALL "reality" television: it is utter junk. However, there are some of these shows that are much more educational than others, with Pawn Stars being one of them. At least you learn things watching that show. The History Channel is a prime example of a network that is basically pandering to a certain demographic. What exactly that demo is I cannot say for sure, but all I know is that they have basically stripped the entire network of educational material.

I mean for goodness sake it IS the History Channel isn't it? That is probably the main thing I've gotten riled about regarding television in general, aside from the reality shows. There is just so much junk on these days. For the past couple of years I have found myself mainly watching documentaries online. I will sit in front of my computer and watch something more often than I will sit in front of my tv. Really the only time I watch tv anymore is before bed, while I'm laying down. And that is just because it is too awkward for me to try to watch something from my computer in bed, lol.

But like I said, Pawn Stars is definitely NOT the bottom of the barrel as far as reality television is concerned. But I would much rather watch truly educational material than anything. Or stuff that is actually about "history" if we're talking about the History Channel. Obviously what has occurred is that these networks are all about ratings. And they think people want to watch these types of shows, so they keep making them. And some of them are utterly ridiculous, and should never have been made into actual programs. But apparently this is what people want, since they keep coming up with more and more and more of this crap.

I love any show where they have antique items. Fascinating to see so many interesting and sometimes absolutely beautiful items from a time gone by. Just like when you go atique hunting, you never know what you may find. I have had this interest since I was young.
