Seriously here's what I see:

-The skull appears fractured/crushed (note broken upper teeth) this may have distorted and shrunken the porportions of the upper part of the skull.
-The body looks possibly dehydrated from being out in the sun after the "wash up"
-The torso appears twisted (reminds me of old fashion twist of chewing tobacco). This would also distort the natural shape, narrowing and elongating) of whatever this was before death.
- The arms look pretty darn long with paws like a sloth.
-The teeth are "bovine like" grinders, meaning it was a plant eater and no incisors detected. Monkeys have incisors

I'm going to say it's a Sloth.

Looks like Gollum to me! Hey vvv, whereabouts in S.A. did this happen?

It happened at Plettenberg Bay, The Crags.

Cool post, got to love local journalists!

Owing to the amount of seal colonies in South Africa, i would go with seal. But god knows whats happened to it to end up in that state.

Thanks! I must agreee with the poster above you that it does sort of remind of a Sloth, head shape etc! Seal, I'm not so sure, would a dehydrated seal have "arms" that long?

A Sloth does look as though it has fingers and if the nails/claws had fallen out/off due to being in the water and then the body had dehydrated and the pelt had contracted around what was left it could quite resemble "fingers"

I know what you mean but i have seen some very strange seal carcasses over the years! Strange mutations happen naturally sometimes, never mind with all the crap currently floating about in the oceans.

For a long shot, how about one of those weird aliens that Edward Snowden claims live under the seas?

Too true!

I can't wait for the papers tomorrow! Could be a hoax I supppose, a branch with fabric wrapped around it and a pair of old broken false teeth?!

From the picture at first glance it appears to be the hybrid offspring of a monkey and Gumby! However, upon a second glance I must concede that it's possibly the product of cross breeding a monkey with a "Stretch Armstrong" toy.

It reminds me of one of those fake mermaids that are'constructed from various body parts of different animals.
It looks fake to me.

Do they have sloths in South Africa? Thought they were in South America. That's a long way to float.

I'm gonna go with Alien, that lives under the ocean. Older one that was buried at sea.

I'm thinking Seal. But the chest does seem off in this pic. It also looks like it has been mummified to an extent.

I look forward to the results.

OK my 2 cents

If you look at the hands they are ape

as are the eyes

and ears

Also you can in this shot see what could easily be a snapped off incisor

Like I said just my 2 cents

It's Jimmy Hoffa after being Buried under giants stadium for ten years
Then being cemented under a strip mall down in Florida . The fellas
Finally gave him the size 11 cement shoes and sent him swimming
Down in the keys .. Guess the current dragged him down to the cape..
The reason so sure is the teeth .. Look at those big teeth ..

Compare : South African Vervet Monkey to the anatomy of this carcass.

Hmm but the teeth aren't matching up so well.
I wonder if they broke off or maybe this is a diff monkey breed.
I'll keep looking through local variants.

Baby lama

Do you have a link to that local paper where I am assuming you got the picture? Or is this picture from somewhere else?

These red colobus seem very similar as well.
With close ups of the hands it would be easier.

Here is a link with a list of monkey species Types of Monkeys
Roloway Monkey

It looks a lot like Gibbons but those are from SE Asia if I am not mistaken and I don't see how that would work out.
