I would never have thought before today that ATS was full of Thatcherites. They are quite proud of it too.Sickening.

Dear OtherSideOfTheCoin,

I certainly understand where you are coming from. While I was not a Thatcher supporter, she certainly did what she believed in and I support that. I read the Mail Online today and it talked about college students cheering her death, I found it tasteless. By the way, I am an American and have never been to England.

ATS has a lot of great people and some real jerks, it is the nature of the site and of open discussion. I personally cannot celebrate another's pain. F&S, maybe you reminded some people that their words matter, I hope so.

The same thing happened when Hugo Chavez died, except no one came out complaining about it. People seem to only to defend dead rich white conservatives.

I agree, your hate of a person should die with them. But that does not mean you should fake a remorseful response to their death. That would just be insulting. Simply say nothing.

With that said, I don't see the problem with people slandering her even after her death. Her policies caused the suffering of hundreds of thousands, not just in Britain but around the world, and she essentially extended British power into de-colonised states with malice intent, to profit over the exploitation of others. It is what it is. I am not going to insult her, because that's not what I do, but I am not going to bury my head in the sand and suddenly idiolise someone because the have died.

I too find that odd
...Many of the most vociferous 'celebrators' are young or students

who would not have been around when she was in office

Forget Thatcher... who the heck is that Lynda Murder Monster??!!!

You really don't want to know. Despite the cartoonish appearance, it really was a horrific case.

Now back on topic.

I'm surprised at the surprise that some have over the high passion being shown on the board over her passing.

This was always on the cards and it has been brewing for many years. What does surprise me is that only a few hundred turned up in Glasgows George Square to 'celebrate'...maybe they are saving it up for the day of her funeral.

I've no doubt that the rolling news coverage will grate with a lot of people who may be inclined to go to one of the 'death parties'.

It's terrible Maggie Thatcher died as I liked he a lot. However, I know she was not a perfect human and politics will cause different users to see her in a bad light. It's understandable where many are coming from in their words. However, I do wish more were respectful.

Really it should not be a sad thing to pass quietly at nearly 90. They said she had a peaceful death so she is very lucky in that.
People should have compassion for the living left behind and not jump all over someone as soon as they leave very true!

Many people get the testicular fortitude to say things when they don't have to say it face to face. Sitting by a keyboard typing rude comments is easy. I try not to get offended by idiotic comments. I usually laugh and think that those folks are probably in mommy's basement or 12 years old.

Dear eletheia,

Please go to the Mail Online and see what they posted, it should still be up. As for why students celebrated, I have no idea. I refused to read what they had to say. I don't celebrate the pain of anyone. I am Irish American and have no love of the "royal" family; but, I will ask people to be respectful when the queen dies because she is still just a person and her family will be in mourning. I have been in charge of dozens of funerals (always end up arranging them and speaking at them). I have buried people who had done some bad things and still they also did good. Funerals are for the living, they are also for the loved ones. We have all the time in the world to discuss what the person's actions after giving the family their time. My opinion.

I just avoided any posts about her to be honest. As a fellow human being I hope she rests in peace and is happy where ever she is now. I don't know enough about her politics to be able to make an informed opinion, but really it seems a bit pointless to bitch and moan about who she was.

Common decency says to have some respect when a person dies, I will not bad mouth her.

I haven't followed the reactions to the passing of Margaret Thatcher, but I can well imagine them. I can understand political opposition to someone but I think the energy of vehemence and bitterness might be better employed in working for one's own political program or party.

Read in Margaret Thatcher's voice:

"I hear the voices of dissent from the opposite side of the house, . . . and, . . . (voice rising) and I say to them, neither the mob in the street, . . . (MPs are shouting) nor those members who choose to act like a mob, in this house will (straining to be heard above the catcalls) alter the course this government has chosen to pursue in fulfilling the agenda (opposition members begin howling like jackals) . . . the agenda read in the throne speech by Her Majesty, (respectful silence for a moment) following the mandate (MPs scream insults from the opposite side) the mandate given to us by (Shouts of Satan! Lucifer!) given to us by the people of Great Britain." (Shouts continue.)

(From the government side, "Hear, hear!")

Baroness Thatcher could take the heat. She sets a great example. RIP to the Baroness, Margaret Thatcher.

Typical uneducated socialists kids, that is the reason for the hate. The vitriol stems from ignorance. Just lazy socialists kids feigning outrage. Get a job, the woman did more in a day than any of you will accomplish in your entire lives.

I see,so due to others view of Thatcher not complying with your own they are labelled in less than complimentary terms?.You must realise that she was neither respected nor admired by those caught in the firing line of her policies, but you stick to your jingoistic idolatry if you like, just don't condemn those who hold an alternative view.

Will you also mourn Cheney as a sweet father and weep for his so sweet smile? Will you ignore the abherration these characters were/are? How about Kissinger? Will you sing his trivial praises while poo-pooing those that rejoice on having one less major evil in the world? Thatcher was a despicable elite that caused much harm and misery to millions, yet you admonish those that are happy, rightly so, about her demise. Do you pout for the million plus Iraqi dead? For the Lebanese, Palestinians and Syrians children burst into globs of flesh and mangled intestines by US and Israeli cluster bombs? How devoting your lamentations to the people that starve to death daily around the world? What of channeling that sadness into anger, not against posters on ATS ringing the bell for a dead witch, but towards the politicians on both parties that are selling out the country to corporations day by day?

Nah, let's hold up Thatcher as a beacon of elitism and all that is to strive for. Hell, all of us here are "momentarily embarrassed millionaires", arent we? Putting down the riff raff will keep us busy until our betters decide to let us in the country club, right OP?

I find it incredible that the Maggie haters seem to forget the socialist idiots we had before her. I remember having power for only 3 days per week, general strikes etc.

She picked the country up and gave it a shake. We wouldn't be where we are now without her. And we should all be grateful for that.

In general I find the Maggie haters tend to be intellectually challenged, like the majority of ATS members.

PS I grew up in a council house in the North, right next to where the miners strike started, so don't give me your hard luck stories...

PPS Maggie also invented soft scoop ice cream. Not a lot of people know that!

I totally agree with the OP.

It's threads like that that make me wonder just what kind of world we would live in if it all did collapse. It seems that some people are not looking for justice, they are looking for revenge. Some people aren't looking for equality, they are looking to take all from one side and give to their side. Disagree with her polcies all you want, but have some respect.

I will never agree with what Thatcher done with regards to privitising, but it did boost the economy not just here but around the world, it just in the long term meant that we would be at the mercy of share holders with reagrds to almost every aspect of our lives.

However, she brought inflation down, unemployment which was high when she entered office, was very low by the mid 80's. Immigration was reduced significantly and actually come the early 90's this country was in great shape.

People will go on about the Unions, but they were holding the country to ransom. People will say about the Miners, but the mining industry was losing billions a year in the 70's! Does anyone ever tell you that? No! She wanted to contract it out, but it was just no profitable, it was bankrupting the country! She had no choice with the mines, but nobody could see that. People go on about Pinochet, but without him helping us with the Falklands, believe it or not, we would've lost. Believe it or not this country has been slowly in decline since the war, Thatcher actually gave it one final lease of life. It was hard for us common folk, but when you look at it the country was far better to live in then than it is now.

It's amazing how we don't get a thread about 13 years of Labour terror and about how Labour brought the country to its knees in the 70's leading to Thatcher actually keeping it above water, yet everyone will jump on the Thatcher bashing bandwagon.

All I need to know is that this country was better to live in and actually resembled Britain more so than it does today. Times were tough, but people were proud to be British and community cohesion was still very much in place, those times are dead.

My perception of ATS is that many ATS members seem to lack life experience, whether that is because they are young students who have yet to fully experience the real world or have lead a sheltered comfortable life and so can afford to be as liberal and socialist as they are, I can't tell. Just by reading many of the comments across many threads, I can see how detached many are from the real world.

Fortunately or unfortunately my job exposes me to the very raw and very real London and at times nation and even continent. However, I don't believe you need my poxy job to know how it is and how it was, but what it does do is give a clear perspective and how it really is. I think quite a few get caught up in their own little world and can't see beyond that subjective mindset. It's not that they aren't intelligent, it's just that they have only experienced one side life and find it difficult to see beyond that. We all can be guilty of that.
