In reply to the XBOX Kinect i do work at Microsoft and i can say yes the Kinect has capabilities to see into your living room bedroom bathroom wherever you have it to play. I dont know if thats what there doing but just to keep an open mind yes Big Brother can see you and its not just the Kinect its all cameras and video cameras that can record it can if someone really wanted to they could turn it on and start recording you without your knowledge oh yes and webcams for computers too!! You can always unplug your x-box and cover it.

Yes it will do all the "bad" things it is accused of. Right now you can wire a kinect to a PC and extend its capabilities. But it is still a choice to put the all seeing eye in your living room or bedroom.

Just as the zombie parents buy this tech for the little ones, they grow up knowing it is OK to have the machines watch them, Measure them and engage them.

Games pretty much ruled the last decade of my life when they where just a hobby before and ironically enough it all went down hill when the first Xbox came out.

I loved computer hadware but was getting sick of having to spend so much cash to upgrade so often back in 2000, so the Xbox grabbed my interest with its impressive hardware for the relatively low price at the time.

I eventually got into modding it for XBMC and inbetween jobs in my early twenties I made ends meet by modding Xbox consoles. Funny enough, most of the software and hardware mods that weren't related to pirating ended up in the Xbox 360 when it came out. They were using us as a open source field research team on how to improve their product.

Becaus of that, when the 360 came out I decided since I was not going to give up gaming, and there was no point in modding the 360, I was going to get into the industry. I managed to get a job testing games here in my hometown of aurora colorado. There is no game industry in colorado, what were the odds?

In 2008 I got the chance to move to washington to do contract work on site at Microsoft on the Black Ops team testing games. I managed to get from my first door into the industry into the home of Xbox in just 3 years. Again what are the odds.

This is where things get a bit interesting...

I was there when the first overhaul of the dashboard was being finished. The "Next Xbox Experience" (NXE) was the one that indroduced the 360 avatars.

From a consumer standpoint there was nothing odd about this, "Next Xbox Experience" (NXE)
From an internal standpoint I thought it was a little odd that its code name was "Stockholm 08"
I made jokes about Stockholm Syndrome but my stupid co-workers didn't know what I was talking about

I was there when "Project Natal" (kinect) was being tested, revised, and finalized.
I was a living data set in one of the largest machine learning operations I have ever heard of.
Anyone with a kinect sensor on a dev kit connected to the network automatically sent voice data to an enormous server farm that learned how to understand english just by being fed thousands of data streams of people talking.
With a 4 microphone array it can pick up and understand 5 people in the room talking at the same time and know exactly where they are without needint the IR scatter for the depth camera to pick up.

Voice Data Collection is still active in all 360 retail Kinect sensors, you cannot opt out of it, you cannot disable it without unplugging the sensor.

Kinect only supports 2 active players in a game for input.
Kinect can actually track and calculate the full skeleton for 6 people withing view of the depth sensor.
This data is so small it can be uploaded to LIVE without interrupting the service or creating lag and you don't know.
I told my co-workers about this but the refused to believe me.
Even though we used a dev kit diagnostic tool called Xbox Studio which would display the skeletal tracking on your computer screen while you played the kinect game and all it required was a network connection.
You can even see it being cached and packed for transmission in Performance Investigator for Xbox File Event Monitor and then sent to the service when monitoring the network traffic with Network Monitor 3.0 using the XSPENC filters from the SDK.

They have since re-written all of the certification tests to use API monitor instead of Network Monitor so nobody gets to see it being uploaded unless they knew how to analyze Xbox LIVE traffic from certification tests conducted before 2011.

I got to witness "Project Natal" in the belly of the beast, the birth of big brothers best eye he's ever had inside your house, on you and your kids, and you pay for the hardware he uses and you pay for the data connection so he can keep watching.

As I witnessed and unfortunately helped ensure the "quality" of "games" that collects data about unsespecting families (even my own brother and his kids who don't believe me either) I realized that I was part of something far worse than the casual distraction that I had previously taken video games for.

After going through my own awakening that ATS played no small part in, realizing I was acting as a cog in a machine for such a backhanded tactic for invasion of privacy aimed at your kids really drove it home and made me want to move back to colorado more than the homesickness did when I first arrived.

It's a good thing that my boss at Microsoft didn't like critical thinkers because he literally fired me for "bad attitude" for suggesting fixes to operational problems with our team in 2011 that were there when I started in 2008.

When I got fired in 2011 I stayed to work on Quantum Conundrum from Airtight Games for a few months before I moved back home to Colorado in April

Can you tell me more about the audio. How sensitive is it, will it get most of the house and can it be accessed remotely or is it always on. Can it use internal memory to record for later transmission. What many do not understand is that if you wish to record voice only you can do so with very little memory.

Not to incredibly sensitive, but enough for most living areas. Properly calibrated with your audio equipment just below what you would generally consider "half volume" in a residence it should be able to track the 5 voices in about 25 square feet, given there is not too much acoustic distortion from objects in the room.

The voice data can be stored locally on any available storage device for diagnostics of game features only. It is against Microsofts certification requirements for published games to store any personally identifiable information on a storage device which includes voice data and RGB pictures from the kinect sensor.

However the voice data can and is encoded using the proprietary XSPENC packet format for transmission.
This is low quality but functional, same codec that is used for realtime headset communication (very low packet size, acceptable transmission delay)
Now here is the fun part, XSPENC is heavily encrypted,... for game data only
Voice Data can never be encrpyted inside of the VDP portion of the XSPENC packet per MS's own requirements.

While the average joe isn't going to capture your traffic and reassemble your conversation without the 360 SDK to even know what the packets look like and some serious chops to put them together without feeding them to an xbox for interpretation

It still means that the millions of Xbox LIVE users are chattering away in front of their Kinect sensors while everything is being sent unencrypted to Microsoft who is now specializing in security systems with NYC as their first big contract.

ETA: so basically no voice data unless you are in the living room and have an active connection to Xbox LIVE

ETA: Kinect is actually the perfect blend of 1984 and The Brave New World,.. people are too entertained and stupid to know that they are being directly observed.

Perhaps they feel justified since they are somewhat being transparent with the masses via movies and entertainment regarding

Thanks for the info. I think that as a tool to identify threats (to them) audio is the first thing to monitor. See my post above. If they find you interesting then they can monitor from all the sources in the home that you provide.

Silly really. Like many, I keep my laptop camera covered. I use a small circular stick on velcro tab. Very neat, wouldn't even realize it is there. It is the microphone that is the real initial danger!

Ya i saw those, not in my house, no way...
the son has xbox in his room, but no connect.
Just the xbox, he wanted connect and was mad
when i told him "no".

If in fact this ends up in other electronic's such as
tv's and other stuff.. i will simply take the electronic's
apart and clip the wires to the camera and mic and
be done with it.

This is total information awareness. This is the internet of "things" they will integrate everything to be wireless and you will think its so you can control it from your phone with an app. Even the most mundane things like coffee pots are going to be potential listening post.

Previous post about perfect blend between 1984 and Brave New World. Huxley was right they knew even in the 60s that they wont force you , but instead you will ask for it and learn to love it. Just like Bertrand Russell stated that the thought of us revolting will be as absurd as lambs revolting against the practice of eating mutton. I could not find the exact quote but the last few days I keep recalling a quote about how as the new world order emerges they wont be able to hide it any longer but by that point it will be too late. I have been linking these new Technologies to what the Government in England once said (a least I think it was i England) and that was:

'We want every house in the UK to have the Internet one day'

Now those words are slowly becoming reality and i'm thinking that they wanted everyone to have this Internet (either through PC, PS or XBOX so that they could be able to spy on you once the Tech is available to do so..... well now it looks like the Tech will be available very soon.

so basically you`re saying that people are so addicted to video games that they will buy and use gaming systems that spy on them?

no one in my family plays video games so i`m not too worried about it but seriously, anyone who is that addicted to video games, that they will give up their right to privacy just to play the games,might want to get some mental health help.

And another thing people need to realize is this audio/biometric video data is collected and cached in packages which await the next available opportunity to phone home. So if you have your Kinect on while you play games (probably for many hours) then think you are going to be safe by unplugging your Xbox you're wrong. The data will just be stored and sent the very next time you turn that puppy on.

Imagine one of these things installed as a permanent feature in new homes, new TVs, new cars etc, with permanent power and data connection and you get an idea of where we are headed.
