Palestinian Islamist militant group Hamas has announced plans to ban access to pornographic websites in Gaza, local media have reported.

The group, which controls Gaza, wants the 10 main internet providers to shut down sites with sexually explicit content from 1 September.

The move is aimed at protecting the social fabric of Gaza, officials said.

However, Gaza officials said the government was not blocking the sites, but asking internet providers to implement safe content standards used internationally, Palestinian news agency Maan reported.

www.bbc.co.uk...
I don't know what to make of this, I'm not a pornista personally, but I am against censorship of any kind.
And as for protecting the social fabric of Gaza, I would have thought that had been eroded years ago.

In the middle of seriously considering the issue, I re-read

However, Gaza officials said the government was not blocking the sites, but asking internet providers to implement safe content standards used internationally, Palestinian news agency Maan reported.
I had to smile. That sounds like it came from the White House. "We're not blocking the sites, we're asking you to block the sites." An offer they can't refuse?

I'm trying to think what sites I would ban as emperor of the internet. Maybe any site publishing legitimate government secrets? Maybe sites posting libel? (Nah, I think they should be sued rather than banned.) Bomb making sites? (Would I have wanted to ban The Terrorist Cookbook? Maybe not.)

I dislike porn, but outside of age restrictions, I wouldn't ban it.

I suppose, in my mind, I would want to bring as much of the current "real world" to Africa and Asia as possible. The mental isolation that some people face is not a good thing. I'm assuming that they will also block anything that threatens the stability or morals of society, images of the Prophet, anything from Israel, etc.

Really nice thread, well done

Now I'm not sure what's going on here...

So a world wide recognised terrorist organisation that holds the tenets of islam at it's most strict has said they will clamp down on pornography? Which is largely considered by strict islam as a western evil?

Why is this strange?

"Showing your hair?" lash her.
"Beard too short!" beat him.
"Likey a bit of naughty mousy?" -- ban the internet!

You're right, it's not strange at all. It does make perfect sense for them to do it, from their point of view. I just wish they wouldn't. I think it's bad for the people in the long run.

That's a very interesting idea. I mean:

The majority of Palestinians should define the boundaries
Will they have a vote? Without the morality police watching? Secret ballots? Will the government follow the wishes of the majority? Will all this be announced before hand? Will there be observers to insure there is no voter intimidation and that the votes will be properly counted?

I could go for that.

I DON'T GET IT! why is everyone down on porn? it's a wonderful glorious thing! as long as everything is nice and legal and everyones having a good time, then I don't see the harm.

besides viewing pornography can be a very healthy thing, in your relationship, in your sexual heath, and even just to satisfy curiosity.

it is proven that men who perve for an hour or more a day live longer, ... just sayin....

anyone ever had a problem with an un-faithful partner? did you consider perhaps talking in a deep way to each other, and perhaps watching a film or two for mutual benifit?

pornography has been around since the invention of the camera, and it's not going anywhere, SO GET USED TO IT!
