A lunatic breaks into your home and ties you to a chair in the TV room. He brings your young children out and sits them on the floor. Now he demands that you make one of two choices: You can either have your kids watch a film of two naked people making tender love, or have them watch...this

Which do you choose?

Something real or something based on fantasy.

I would choose the real world over fantasy.

Isn't this really a question of sex vs. violence? Ideally, I would prefer to expose my young children to neither because I think both have the potential of having adverse effects on their development. If the children were perhaps in their teens then I would choose the sex over the violence because I think it is easier for a teen to properly process sexuality and make discerning decisions on that subject than it is for violent acts. Just my opinion.

Considering pornography - and yes, tender love-making can be classified as pornography, considering the "love" aspect of it is subjective to the viewer - is not exactly child-suitable material...

Then again, making your children watch a movie about a man who has been whipped and crucified, with all of the gore visible, when they don't even understand the premise...

This is a rock and a hard place. You are creating a deliberate catch-22...a precarious situation, utilizing that which we've come to label as "adults only" and that which we've come to label as a symbol of loving sacrifice.

In the immortal words of Peter Griffin... IT'S A TRAP!

Definitely the two people making love, I wouldn't want my future children exposed to such brainwashing. One can only hope, that by the time I have children, the world will have done away with such religions.

there is none. that's why the world's leaders love institutionalized religion so much; you can never prove it right, you can never prove it wrong. It's just stories in books at the end of the day, and yet so many humans are so easily whipped into a frothy fanatical frenzy over who's right and who's wrong. Religion vs. Religion. Faith Vs. Atheism. Know-it-alls vs. Agnostics. Will we ever stop fighting over the definition of "god" and the universe and life in general? Will we ever admit that we just don't know? Once we admit that we're alone in the dark, we'll realize that all we have is each other. As long as one group is viewed as the "chosen of god" and another group viewed as "infidels" we will never know peace on earth.

Absolutely, they would watch the people having sex. No question. That other stuff is highly disturbing! It would give ME nightmares!

My husband used to work in a video store. One mother wouldn't let her kids get "The Blue Lagoon" because of the innocent love between two people who grew up on a deserted island... What did they leave with? "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre"...

People are nuts! :shk:

The OP offered proof of religion warping minds, but it does no such thing and instead offers a choice of exposing violence or sex to our children. The OP does not take into account of differing cultures around the world, by which most have no problems exposing sex to children but do have problems exposing violence.

The choice the OP offers is not based on religious beliefs/brainwashing but on cultural/societal differences.

"Sex and violence"... Interesting phrase. It is said SO many times in this context that people think they're actually related or similar. As if one has something to do with the other. Or one is as bad as the other... That's crazy!

Sex is something we all do. It's wonderful and beautiful.

Violence is NOT something beautiful or something we do or should do.

Comparing the two is sick. And to do so proves (to me, at least) that religion has warped the mind of those who believe that they're equally "bad" for our kids.

Thats funny, I think my post clearly says "violence OR sex", instead of "violence AND sex".

According to my earlier childhood education- "OR" presents an alternative idea/item, while "AND" presents non-contrasting ideas/items. Or maybe I just don't know how to read.

My comment holds regardless of which conjunction is used to string the two together.

Sex or violence seems to be a choice where both sides are pretty evenly weighted. I used the conjunction AND because that's the way it's said most of the time. "Our children are exposed to too much sex and violence", as if both are bad.

You can make it all about a conjunction or you can read the message of my post. I see you have chosen a grammar distraction. That's cool. Makes no difference to me.

My son was watching a show on tv one time and was happy and he said this should be good show, I asked him what kind of show it was and he said happy tree friends. So yeah that sounds like a good show and so he started watching until he started seeing this brutal cartoon of animals getting killed. To this day he will not watch it and was scarred by it, this world has gone from good family shows I used to watch with my family to horror in a matter of years. It seems people like to blame things on God when the world is filled with men and woman that kill and we idolize them like billy the kid and so on. It's humans that are brainwashing humans into robots so they cannot feel and it seems to work and will blame God and Jesus for it. Any good parent will not allow a child to watch sex and brutal murders and I even heard on the news awhile back a couple letting their nine year old daughter watch them have sex.

The christian religion has a foundation in brutal, savage violence. If violence is unacceptable, then how can this religion be acceptable? (Good choice, by the way).

Yes, both are unacceptable, but only one is unnatural. The other promotes the acceptance of violence and is downright insane.

It would only be a distraction if we were debating on a same specific subject...but we weren't now were we? My post you quoted addressed the misleading title and confounding variable of the OP's "proof". You took it out of context, waaay out, and gave a retort addressing the beauty of one and the repulsiveness of the other.

It wasn't a grammatical distraction, it was defending the contextual integrity of my post.

The proof is in your choice. If you would prefer young minds to watch a heinous act of violence over watching what anyone could observe while passing a farm with horses mating in the field, then your mind is warped.

I have stated many times on ATS that I don't know if some form of a god exists, but I am absolutely positive that no twisted god of the bible exists.

Yup! I once drove by a porn shop where religious people (and concerned parents) were protesting this establishment. Having arrived at my destination, which was a huge flea market, I noticed sooo many weapons for sale: Crossbows, those karate star things, nunchucks, huge knives, switchblades...
And, not one protester.
