Hmmm i never got that out of that song.. wow! 10 pages is enough for me, lots and lots of input, some agree some disagree... all i know this will be my final post on this thread... Mods feel free to delete if you want... I know everyone has their opinions and so do i... one post summed it up..... This is a society that is on its way down to its knees.... sure war/ politicians/money/sex/scandals have alot to do with a dwindling society, but so does music... And thug rap music is just one of many iron nails in the coffin.... Have a great day everyone. thanks for everyone's input.

What is sad is that the US government force feeds this rap negativity straight to specific demographics and age groups. It is meant to brainwash and it is not "started by the blacks". Race is not even an issue here. The negative rappers dont even write their own lyrics OR music. Come on. It is garbage.

First off this is not gonna be a rant, but rather a look of how i view the above mentioned Title.

It does not matter what race someone is when they make rap music, and try to be a thug, glorifying drugs, sex, violence, stealing, money, fancy cars, and many other wrong things that is being put in to the American society.

We have now all hear about this whole deal with Trayvon Martin, and George Zimmerman dilemma, and speaking of that, one of the best threads with lots of links and info are on this thread www.abovetopsecret.com...

I believe today's society and especially today's youth in the united states are being brainwashed by music (mostly Rap).
There is nothing to glorify when all the rappers do is talk about negative things, well things that should be considered negative... Selling drugs and riding with the homies in a stolen escalade should not be glorified and played on TV and the radio to today's youth!
I seriously think when the Constitution was made and the First Amendment was introduced they should have set limits or boundaries.. look at what has happened to this country since rap music debuted and gave birth to the thug! The American culture today is all about looking like you are cool and having gold teeth and baggie pants.. This is not cool and its only leading to the destruction of this once great nation.

I want to know your general input on this subject... Do you personally believe music, thug life and the American culture has polluted the minds of the American people?

Well i sure do.....

I agree 100%, you can't count the number of times I have thought this. You should have the same limits on Rap as alchohol and porn and cigs.

Rap is not what's wrong with this country. It's just music. The fact that you just stereo typed all of it as just some guys singing about money, cars, and thuggish ways shows that you don't really pay attention to what it's really about. Its artful expression of music. Just because you haven't tried to understand It doesn't mean you should criticize it. Jay Z said it best: do you fools listen to music or do ya just skim though it. Come on bro, pay attention to the message before you just bash. If people are stupid enough to let something like music influence them negatively then maybe they have other problems they need to address.

LOL. This line of thinking is as old as the Middle Ages and their thoughts on dissonant notes. Even back then people thought music caused evil. And it didnt.

What is your opinion on Jazz music? Even Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington talked about smoking reefer with his buddies in a car under city lights. Coupled with tasty licks and a nice rhythmic beat you can dance too, you got yourself baby making music.

Since the dawn of the human ear people have been making music, and you know how it pretty much started? It started with people playing flute and banging drums which eventually lead to dancing, intoxication, mass consumption of food, and sex orgies.

So, nothing has really changed. It is not the music. It is person interpreting the music. Just about the only form of music that could be possibly described by a stretch of the imagination as "wholesome" is classical music.

As an adult, I have to admit that there is a lot of Rap songs I like. However, I feel it is extrememly adult oriented and should be viewed as such. Like movies you should not be allowed to access the content until you are of an age that will be less impressionable. To be honest, most rappers are the exact opposite of what they are portraying in their acts. It is like pro wrestling, it is all show for the impressionables.

The subject title is very true, no matter who you are.
TBH, black men don't want their sons growing up to be gansta niggas. They will do all they can to see that it don't happen, even write songs to make themselves rich so their familiy don't have to live out the songs that they may have had to live.

Not so much as these idiotic Zimmerman avatars are disgracefull to ATS.

Get over it. You might aswell make an avatar looking like the sign Bruce Willis was wearing in Die Hard with a Vengeance.

I agree with the title. Since when did it become cool to dress and act like a broke ass loser thug? What happened to values and respecting others for who they are as a person and not for what they can give?

Take accountability for actions out of the schools and this is what children turn into. The schools do not give our children figures to look up to anymore because they are so assembly lined. Kids in and kids out as fast as possible.

Ironic how ATS is about denying ignorance, yet the OP & many others associate rap with only what they see on the mainstream. As for worshiping materialism, the entirety of Hollywood exhibits all those things...

I'm 40 years old, and some of you sound like a bunch old folks heading for the nursing home. "Get off my lawn!!"

There's no doubt that our culture has changed drastically, and in some ways for the worse, but if you truly want to start learning how and why that is happening instead of blaming Rap music, there are plenty of books on the subject. I know it's much easier to blame a sub-subset of music than to face the larger realities of what is happening, but it's simply not accurate. Violent 'Gangsta Rap' is a symptom of the changing world, not the sole cause.

I hate to sound optimistic in such company, because I know everyone here pines for the end of the world and all, but what I see today is that the pendulum is already swinging back the other way in a lot of places. Check out all the people who are hell-bent on making life better for the whole world. Start watching TED talks over at TED.com. Go learn about urban farming and other initiatives. Better yet, join the discussion and/or get involved.

I know this sounds rather cliche, but it's still true. Change starts at home. From there it ripples out through your sphere of influence. Don't sign worthless internet petitions, declare your position to you friends and family, and live it. I've come to understand that sitting around and hoping for 'the end' to come is just an excuse for people to not take responsibility for the world they live in, or the future of it. Pretending the end of the world is perpetually happening next week takes a lot of burden away, doesn't it?

You nailed it. Empires rise and fall but the PEOPLE are never without power so long as they dont allow themselves to surrender to hopelessness. If you dont like something, work on changing it. Once thoughts and ideas are put to purpose they can be made real and anything is truly possible. All of these atrocities that have rained down upon humanity began with ideas. And if people were willing to flood the world with actions and ideas from the other end of the spectrum then they could truly turn the tide.

people who dont like the lyrical content of songs should write one themselves. Put in the lyrics YOU think the world should hear...and try and get it out there...in whatever way you can. Nevermind selling records or getting famous..just use music to heal some of the hurt you think its causing.

It's clearly the leading cause in youthful violence. Rock, country and whatever else may have occasional songs about violence, but rap is far off the spectrum. At least worshiping the devil doesn't promote extreme violence . This is not intended to be racist, but look at the stats, blacks commit 95% of murders, rapes, burglaries etc.

So what is the cause of that, in your mind? Do you think "blacks" are just born to be thugs? Do you think it is genetic? Is it possible there are some socioeconomic effects and education program deficiencies at work here or are you just thinking these people are born evil? You may not intend to sound racist, but I also get the impression that you are taking the easy road in your judgment process, as are many others around here.

So great you think you have solved the problem. So, seeing that you have put so much thought into that the problem is a certain race being responsible for most of the crime, I am sure you have put just as much thought into a solution to the problem. I would love to hear what you suggest be done to correct this. Don't be shy.

Does one race commit more crime because of their social economic status or do more of that group get accused, convicted, and jailed of crimes? This nations problems are much more complex and instead of looking for places to point the finger lets hear all those so quick to slap a colored label on it pose some solutions instead.

While I am waiting to hear your answer I will be busy beating my head into the wall praying for this thread to go away.

Actually,

Whats wrong with this nation, and ANY OTHER is the allowance of the NANNY STATE to raise and discipline kids that you were too excited to lay down and produce. Spoiling kids is not teachin kids, and Friending kids is not raising kids.

Rap isn't the problem. I listened to Rap as a young black male, but with active parents who cared for their progeny, and with one phrase from my father/Cop of : "if I catch you tryin to act like a thug, you and me will see how thuggish you are, in the backyard..."

I respected my parents. I recognized they are the reason i'm alive and as their investment in the future I did what I could to give them a positive return on their investment.

I totally respect this post!!

I have mentioned i listen to dance music and some artist such as usher, lil wayne, to name a cpl, dont get me wrong, both those artists have questionable lyrics in some of their songs... but i am an adult, i do know better, and i teach my kids the same thing that your father has... my kids enjoy popular music, including some rap.. but i try to teach him that its not ok to do what they talk about in those songs.... i cant make him not listen to it, because frankly its every fu**** where! movies, kids movies, radio,tv, video games, everywhere!!!!! I truly home my children will use their brain as you have.. thank you for your input... that's the whole reason i posted this thread... for input...

There you go! Bravo!!! See I knew you were just being ignorant. You let your kids, listen to rap, as do you. Just like in my first post, it is not the music, its the parents. Nothing else. You already knew though, and continued to post ignorance just for replies. I see you have managed some 20 flags. So we can assume outta of all the members on ATS. 20 have about as much ignorance as you do. So... not bad ATS. Not bad at all.

Clearly its the leading cause, I mean clearly. How blind I must be.

Long before I started listening to rap, or hip hop, or techno, or oldies, or country, I listened to rock. And followed death metal, and I can assure you that you can buy whole albums, (just like rap) that not one song has a "good" message. Like the Korn self titled album.

So by your first sentence I can tell you have no interest in denying ignorance. Good day.

I mean really? This must be blame the world's problems on someone else day. Lets not blame the people who really deserve it like corrupt governments, politicians, military and all around douches.

No, lets single out an entire genre of music. It's not as if there is good and bad to it, just like every other genre. No. Rap is the absolute worst thing going on right now. Lil Wayne ( while he is a TERRIBLE artist) is NOT the cause of people being stupid. PEOPLE are the cause of people being stupid.

With so many GOOD rappers with meaningful lyrics out there you choose to focus on mainstream crap, and on top of that not the mainstream crap of today, but the mainstream crap of the early 90s- mid 2000s. In case you haven't noticed, rap hasn't been " gangsta" for quite some time. I do notice you use the word ghetto regularly in your post. Interesting. I wonder if it has less to do with where and more with who. Lets go through some examples of good rap.

www.youtube.com...
This is Lupe fiasco. He actually has some songs with deep meanings if you can get over your apparently squeamish fear of rap music.

www.youtube.com...
I really recommend this song right here.

Now lets show some examples of " gangsta" rap Circa 1990s
www.youtube.com...
This is pretty old.

www.youtube.com...
This is also pretty old.

Now, lets look at something current.
www.youtube.com...
Wow, isn't that just the most EviL thing you have ever heard? This just makes me want to grab a huge 40, bust some caps in some people's butts, and totally lose respect for myself as a woman. THIS just happens to be the most current hiphop out right now. Oh yes, this is so terrible and ghetto.

So please, spare me with your huge generalization of an entire genre of music. ALSO another thing that annoyed me is that USHER and RKELLY are NOT RAPPERS. They are singers. R&B to be exact. Please, lets get that straight. Thank you. To avoid further confusion I will show you examples.

www.youtube.com...
This is Jay-Z he is a rapper. He has shocking lyrics about women sometimes in his songs.

www.youtube.com...
This is Usher. He is an R&B artist. Sometimes he has shocking lyrics about women, but he also sings AMAZING love songs.

Another thing that really grinds my gears. Hip pop is NOT RAP!

www.youtube.com...
This is Nicki Minaj. She calls herself a rapper. She isn't.

www.youtube.com...
This is Foxy Brown. She was an actual rapper.

www.youtube.com...
This is Lil Wayne. He is terrible.

www.youtube.com...
This is Eminem. He is an amazing lyricist.

Alright I will stop my rant with one last thing to point out. I see you graciously decided not to comment on Death Metal. You also declined to comment on emo screamo music. Both promote drug use, suicide, homocide, genocide and,,, necrophilia

Your problem OP is not with rap in itself You don't like the " ghetto" Well I have news for you, the ghetto probably doesn't like you either. People write music based on their own life experiences. You don't like? Then by all means change the radio station. Delete it out of your ipod.. Don't blame an entire genre of music on the problems of the youth. There is much more that is wrong with this generation than hearing about bling and hoes.

Statements like this make me very afraid of people.

There are quite a few threads on ATS that speak of sacrifice of large numbers of people in strategic locations for specific reasons to appease some dark overlords. Im not even religious and I see the dangerous path this line of thinking takes. I guess if you can demonize a group it makes it that much easier for the real demons to come in and get comfy while your back is turned. I hope these thoughts of evil blacks comfort people while those smiling...mainly white faces take everything from their homes to their 401k....People are under serious illusions if they think that their whiteness will somehow make them immune to the desperation of disenfranchisement. Your time is coming middle america. The ghetto is coming to a town near you. Lets see how safe those cul de sacs are when the gathering economic darkness turns a chunk of the middle class to hard drugs. You think its blacks you need to be afraid of?? Tsk tsk... I dont see "Jamal" and his crew holdin it down at Goldman Sachs. It wasn't rap music that crashed the economy. Wall Streezy in the heezy...beezy! The real Thugs wear Brooks Brothers. And you can't just cross to the other side of the street on them.
