OccupyAtlanta, Tea Party, Unions, Immigrants, Social Organizations Get Together To Defeat State Bill

Late last week, a groundbreaking coalition of unions, immigrant and social justice organizations, Occupy Atlanta, Tea Party Patriots, faith-based communities and others turned out against – and defeated – Georgia’s anti-free speech Senate Bill 469, sending a resounding message to state and federal legislators about the limits to challenging Americans’ first amendment rights.

The defeated bill, which would have outlawed picketing and reduced payrolls for organized labor, also contained provisions that would have made it an aggravated misdemeanor to protest or engage in civil disobedience on or near private property, punishable by multiple-year prison sentences and fines of $1,000 per day. The coordinated action by occupiers, Tea Party Patriots, AFL-CIO representatives, church, immigration and civil rights leaders and others opposed to the bill marked a new stage in the growing national call for civil and economic rights.

This renews my faith in Americans. Short of our government ceasing it's shredding of the Constitution and it's addiction to lobbyist dollars, this is the sort of thing I hope to see more than anything else. Okay so these groups will divide on economic and social lines but when it comes to our Rights we cannot let those differences keep us divided.

It's time for us to be on our toes, there's some very scary business going on in State and Federal levels, protection of the Constitution and our rights needs to come before all else, as important as those all else's are...we can't do a damn thing about them if we are even minimally suppressed.

but I respect their right and the tea parties
right to protest without being thrown in prison.
When almost every piece of land is private now
except the roads we drive on, and the drive to outlaw
all and any protesting is on, this is good news..
This is why we do not abuse our rights
they abuse them enough, and will look
for any reason to silence anyone they disagree
with be it occupy or the tea party..

This is something almost EVERYONE on ATS should be able to get behind!

Tea partiers and Occpiers on the same squad! A beautiful example of the "alternative" ideologies on both right and left coming together to smash the hegemonic center!

If nobody pooped in the street, even I would join such a protest.

I take it this was a peaceful protest directed where it should count-towards the lawmakers.
This is a good target. Target the lawmakers. They are the ones who allow Wall Street to be corrupt. Anti-corruption laws can be effective.

As a side note, does anyone think passage of the anti-insider trading by Congress would have been passed if they hadn't already found a way around it?

Honestly if every group that ever existed were judged by what a handful of said group did, there would never be any groups. A person did this a person did that...they're not actions condoned by the majority. What amazes me is that media covered this and people pounced on it and know about it as opposed to the fact that Occupy targets both the government and Wall St et al.

Sorry, but it was the protest for losing payroll money, not freedom of speech. If it was just freedom of speech issues, there wouldn't have been such a turnout. Most people in America don't give a damn about free speech, especially liberals.

True free speech allows people to express their opinions, even if an unfortunate or unpopular one, or even a correct one said in an unfortunate way, and don't try to control how a person speaks. Liberals are also control freaks, and always try to controls how a person expresses themselves, under the guise of using diplomacy to not offend anyone. Which is utter crap.

Liberal tolerance is a sham.

Well...are you sure you aren't confusing disagreement with shutting down? Because yes a liberal will argue with you 24/7 if you're putting people down or discriminating against them. Me as a liberal...say whatever you want just don't expect me to be quiet about it, I have the right to debate or disagree with you. I would fight for anyone's free speech.

That is very true. You only need to post something on this forum that goes against the 'liberal' agenda and it is clear that only 'free speech' that agrees with liberals is acceptable.

Modern day 'liberals' appear to have taken lessons in free speech from Pol Pot, Stalin and Chairman Mao.

I'm rubber, you're glue? I think you're as confused as the poster you quoted. I get jumped on all the time for my liberal views here on ATS and even more so for my support/participation of/in Occupy, with rare occasion have I taken it as someone telling me I don't have the right to say what I say, they just disagree.

An agreement doesn't insult people to shut them down either.

A disagreement is a civil discussion that is just an exchange of ideas without hostility for the sake of learning about people and other things, not scoring points for your crowd.
