Oh now you are just being pathetic, being a vegetarian is your choice, it is absolutely nothing like being abused because of your race, colour, creed gender. Yeah, I've seen a lot of those 'sprout eaters go home' signs smeared on doors.

Okay, point taken (but your animosity rejected). How about "short", "fat", "spotty", "big-eared", "hairy"? These are adjectives used on a daily basis worldwide, casually, and whilst one has to wonder about the compassion of the person using them (much like the compassion of a person using racist speech), are they words which should land the 'offender' in prison?

People are entitled to freedom of speech. KKK rallies are legal. Black Panther rallies are legal. You can not take away from a person their right to express them self whether you agree with them or not.

Britain has started down that road and prosecuted over 12,000 people last year for various "hate crimes" and "hurtful speech".
Glad I live in the US, for once I think we're doing something better than them.
(by the time they finish locking up everyone for racist speech there won't be anyone left to guard the prisoners)

Friend, I have no issue with you disliking racism, I just disagreed with the "solution" you proposed for the reasons I expressed.

And to be completely honest, my opinion has been changed a bit thanks to some of the people posting in this thread.. for which I am thankful. I think I did go a bit far there but hey, it really is a very touchy subject for some and I really do just have such a strong dislike for racism, or any other kind of discrimination. It's just something that I wish we wouldn't have to keep debating over again and again and and an.. you get the picture.

But yeah, again, those who are debating that jail time is not the answer, I think I've come to agree with that viewpoint now. Before I was wrong, something no one likes to admit but yeah, it's the way it is. It has to be said, ATS as a whole really are a powerful, Intelligent bunch. Genuinely.

People in the UK used to say "It's a free country".

People don't say that anymore.

Hi, not sure where I used animosity, I used the term pathetic as I don't feel being a vegetarian really comes into the same league (don't be so easily offended). As for the other points, if it amounts to gross intimidation then I don't know. Depending on where you are in England you may be aware of a case where the mother of a severely handicapped child took her own life and her daughters because she could no longer take the verbal abuse aimed at them by the scum on her estate because of her childs disability - free speech or abusive behaviour? You choose which one you would be most comfortable sleeping at night with on your thoughts.

Hey, I didn't write the law around this, but for abuse that is or could be viewed as intimidation then I have absolutely no issue with it being dealt with without the 'victim' having to take recourse through violence. If you have a different view then as I say, we should agree to disagree.

Yeah, from what I understand in the US neighbourhood watch people are allowed to just shoot people and claim self defense, aren't they? Well, gets away from any complaints I guess. Like I say, the First Amendment stopped prosecuting slave owners from calling their slaves what they liked, maybe sometimes times should move on.

ETA for Americans, see that for irony or not, your choice.

Show me any country where you are truly free..
Freedom only happens when you go into the voting booth.

just like signs in the uk for rooms in the 60s in the uk used to say
"no blacks,no irish,no dogs etc etc"
they dont say that anymore either

luckily societys evolve and mature and hopefully become more tolerant of cultures and diversity
obviously there are small groups who cling on to the "i will stick to my own kind" views
but for the most society evolves and so does tolerance

What is your personal opinion? If through music they send a message out that may incite such violence even though the artist claims poetic license, what are your thoughts on that? If someone was killed and the defendent claimed they were motivated to kill based on the song, well, I don't know, what do you think?

his suffering? ..the dude who racially abused a dying man on a twitter ...

im not getting off... just pointing out i think we were right to lock him up ...

we live in a multicultural society, everyone in the uk knows the score when it comes to racism..its a no no

the courts sent a message .. racial tensions in Britain comes from all sides ..takes one idiot to start the ball rolling ....56 days in prison ..he will serve 2 weeks max ....social media sites are not places where you want to start racial rants ...

anyone with half a brain should know this...

exactly this point

the uk is a racial tinderbox that just needs the 1 slightest spark for all kinds of riots and backlashes to fire up
the goverment and police are fully aware of this
if they did nothing about this kid and his racial outburst they risked more racial hatred exploding
and at the end of the day regardless of ones stance on racism/free speech
the kid broke a law
its not up for debate as law is the law regardless if myself or anybody else agrees with it
we do not make the laws but we have to abide by them regardless of if we agree with them or not

The sun newspaper hacked into a murdered little girls phone. Should they be locked up ?

What was this so called message the courts sent ? "do not be racist towards a ill black footballer"

Its not about whether you think he was right or wrong, its about been jailed for having said something.

What next ? I think racist thoughts and they will lock me up
