"I'm not concerned about the very poor," he said. "We have a safety net there. If it needs repair, I'll fix it. I'm not concerned about the very rich; they're doing just fine. I'm concerned about the very heart of America, the 90%, 95% of Americans right now who are struggling, and I'll continue to take that message across the nation."

he's after the middle class vote

not a bad strategy

Hey desolutecancer... we understand my friend...
Just less than 4 years ago my wife and I had great jobs, all the benefits including health insurance and made a mid six figure income banking the wife's salary... then the housing debacle destroyed my employment and my wife became ill and is now on SS disability and can do no work as she was dx'd with PPMS.. Multiple scelerosis...
I gave up after more than two and one half years of attempting to find a job... I sent out hundreds of resumes and filled out applications until I have critiqued virtually every application form in exiswtence... I applied for every job in my field and for the record, I applied for at least a hundred lesser jobs and finally I applied for any job... I even applied for jobs such as greeters at wal marts, floor person at home depots, stockers at kmarts and grocery stores, most places including the convenience stores they smile, hand you a resume and tell you there are waiting lists as long as your arm... etc.
The grocery stores there say they have waiting lists for bag boys and the bag boys and greaters tell you unless you know someone in management..., forget it...
Between medical bills, attorney's fees and living we exhausted our thousands we had saved for retirement and I finally gave up and applied for and nowI draw my SS... I took more than a $500 loss by applying early and now draw less than $1,600 per month... as I stated above my wife draws SS Disability and she gets a little more than $800 per month..
Suprise, out of the blue this past Monday we recieved a letter from AHCCCS Arizona that my health insurance was cancelled as of today, February 1, 2012, as we make too much money...
For the record, every where I checked out pricing for health insurance the fee was more than $1,100 per month just for me, which is almost half our total income...
Although the folks we spoke to when applying were not mean spirited we felt more or less laughed at when we applied for food stamps because of our $2,400 per month income...
If it weren't for living with family the past three and one half years... and now living in a house owned by my sister... we'd be in the street... btw... my sister had to loan us the money or B of A was going to repo our 2003 Ford and wouldn't refinance the $1,700 we owed to pay it off...
So we certainly understand your dilema... the people who really need help in this country cannot get it... my wife and I have learned the hard way and we will never again mention taxes or entitlements that help the poor or aged...
I have no effin idea how poor families pay their bills and feed their children... I have no idea how they live...
The purpose of my post is not to recieve pity... but to tell everyone... the poor are suffering in this country.. everyone should have to live under the welfare radar for a short time... especially our politicans...

I am disgusted...

So anyone here who knows me, knows I am conservative...but I cannot back this guy. For years I thought he was pretty good, when he was gov., but the more that comes out...geez. I know the statement was out of context and all, but he just says some wacky things.

Plus yesterday i heard an audio of him when he was gov. He always claims he is pro-life and always was...I believed him because of his religion and things he has said. But this audio of him was shocking. He said he is pro-choice and even though the legal age for abortion was 18, he would allow children to get approval from the court to go ahead without a parent. I don't want to get into an abortion debate. What galls me is him claiming to be conservative, but agreeing with taking away parents rights and wishes for their children...that is dangerous territory. He has no problem letting the gov take over for parents and in the case of the poor..that is not what this country needs. We need someone who believes in personal responsibility and will help get us back on that path.

Or it could be Obama telling the poor that he will pay their mortgage and put gas in their tanks just as soon as he can get it from the rich....

The real point on the economy is that the dollar is nothing more than an IOU, totally worthless. Everything you "own" be you rich or poor does not belong to you because you gave nothing of value in return. You were swindled out of your blood, sweat and tears, not by your boss but by TPTB One candidate out there seeks to put this to rights and I don't think his name needs to be said.

Romney is no conservative that is laughable Romney is another piaus pompous Obama.

You just said, " ANOTHER RIGHT WING BASHING THREAD"

We are bashing Romney, but you are here defending him, yet,

"Romney is no Conservative..."

Well Neo, what are you doing then buddy, are you confused?

Well, he is right. Romney is no more a real conservative than McCain and the left hates him because he is Republican. That is hilarious because all the so called Democratic Socialists in the Democrat Party are all very wealthy, especially little ms Red Riding Hood pelosi. The main difference between Romney and Obama is that at least Romney isn't bashing free enterprise or Capitalism.

I know this won't make you feel a lot better, but it is meant as more of a validation. I heard a news story today of a couple and the man is an engineer and cant get work. I forgot what the wife does but this economy is hurting everyone.

I can no longer stand by and prepare I must speak. To those who are middle class here do not try and relate the problems of the poor. I have lived in both class systems middle class then poor. You do not understand what it is like to be truly poor. I do not accept government aid and never will, most poor citizens live day to day. Many of us only eat one meal a day, and the can't keep a job argument is false. I was fired two hours ago after working at said job for 3 years, the reason I was fired was because I spread sauce counter clock wise instead of clock wise. We must all remember the great saying "Rome is the mob." There will be a time when the poor no longer can take what the rich and middle class perpetrate against them and violent revolution will occur. This is not a threat, it is merely examining historical trends, and anyone who thinks this is not possible is naive. This is how all long standing governments fall.

he's a forerunner because of people's greed and envy. he plays off people's lust for money, power, fame and wealth by convincing people that you're one of his and he'll make you rich.

once in office, he'll forget you faster than he can button up his presidential jacket.

this guy tops the list of scum. he has money, now he want's the ultimate power. he wants to be on the same list as lincoln and washington and be remembered for all of history. it's all ego with these guy. it's a mental illness.

how many people know who trebonianus gallus is. he was one of many roman emperors. point is, when the american empire falls, no will give a sh-t or remember who mitt romney or george bush were.

I'm not a Romney fan at all, but what you're doing is misquoting and taking things out of context, just like the MSM does. I listened to the original interview with Soledad and here's what I heard.... Romney said he's not worried about the poor or the rich , cause they both have safety nets in place...what he's worried about is the average American, the 99%, the middle class.Sensationalism and embellishment are the common tools of mass media, why not stick with the truth and deny ignorance.

not a bad strategy

Except it's the only class of America that's shrinking. The poor are surging, the rich are growing fast. The middle class is collapsing.

Yes, Romney would be correct in that our socialist welfare system has in place a govt mechanism the poor can go to as well as the charities, but there is nowhere for the middle class to go to because the middle class pays taxes and in this economy has as little hope of climbing out of the pit as the poor. Romney also knows that socialism is the mechanism whereby war is waged on the bourgeois which is the middle class. We are losing the middle class and Romney is totally right about that. But he did sign Romneycare into law, so that troubles me.

This is what the rest of the world see as your typical American businessman. Arrogant, uncaring and a sociopath.
He WILL be the next president, he fits the psychological profile perfectly.

I say let him keep talking and whie he's it maybe he should remind us that he's all for polygamy. Just add more fuel to the fire Romney after this presidential election I wouldn't doubt that this guy goes away permenently from the humiliation.

I think one of the best ways to help the poor (aside from Education as #1), is to somehow help them get out of the inner cities, (or to go to and fro from major urban areas, for employment) say, by building more communities and better community living, along high speed commutor rail corridors between all the major urban areas of the USA. Then again, the two trillion which went to war, and the other two TRILLION stolen by a deregulated Wall Street, and as a result of the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act under Bush'Cheney, makes that kind of prospect a little more dicey. Or perhaps, a PPP (public private partnership) Bank might help facilitate the process, the only problem being that China would then end up owning the USA's modern Civil Infrastructure, oh what to do...

Romney'll fix it ALL!

My thoughts exactly Heretic, either candidate whether it be Romeny or Gingrich will dig their own grave. They do it on a daily basis, although I did enjoy Newt's moon base talk in Florida although he's just playing to the hearts of the Nasa employees that are now jobless. Obama like you said will be able to just sit back enjoy his dinner while Romney craps himself, I can see it already, Speaker: "Alright that was a colorful choice of words from Mr. Romney, so President Obama what do you think about this situation?" Obama: "Can't you see I'm eating here? An did he just say be hates poor people?"

Romney "Not Concerned About the Very Poor

GOP front-runner Mitt Romney said this morning that he's not concerned about the plight of the country's very poor because there are social safety nets that take care of them.

"I'm not concerned about the very poor. We have a safety net there. If it needs repair, I'll fix it."

Wow, the nerve of this guy. I'm no fan of Romney, but i can hardly believe he has the softballs to say this--nationally.

Safetly nets that YOU want to GET RID OF!?! To even say such a thing--that he is not concerned about the VERY poor--shows his true despicable nature.

One could attribute the slippage (if it is indeed such) to being extremely tired (which then allows his true feelings to come out), but it shows his character. Screw the bottom of society, those who barely have NOTHING, including the HOMELESS. Hey, they're just outliers, right, just like the very rich.

He also said:

"I'm in this race because I care about Americans," Romney told CNN's Soledad O'Brien

The Poor aren't considered Americans to Romney? Or only those that make money, help his corporate buddies, and "contribute to society?"

By the way, let me bulldoze my mansion to build a bigger mansion, 'cause i am not worried about you people who can't eat. By the way, if you can't eat, and get food stamps, my opponent says Obama is the food stamp president, and we don't like government handouts, so that is one safety net we'll probably cut.

Hey, i'm Romney, i have the poor's best interest in mind in this Great country of The US.
Just stay out of our way, and we'll throw you the scraps. Vote for me!

What say you, ATS? Another slip of his true self...?
