After reading all the post in this thread, I believe there's a misunderstanding, for all I know, it was ISRAEL having an agreement with CYPRUS to start drilling for oil in CYPRUS (southern). So why is it wrong for TURKEY to have an agreement with NOTHERN CYPRUS (yes i know they're not internationally recognized, but, is NOTHERN CYPRUS going to gain any profit from the oil drilled from the ISRAELI-CYPRUS agreement? I dont think so.) to drill for oil? So there is just nothing wrong. As for who started the conflict, I'm going to point my finger to Israel, they have no right at all to have anything to do with the oil in Cyprus, even the oil company is American, not Israeli.

lets being with saying that Norther Cyprus is an occupied area just like Berlin was back in the cold era. Once you understand that simple fact its simple to see how much of a laughing stock Turkey has become behind closed doors. If you look back at the ranting and waving of arms that Turkey has been doing towards Greece, Cyprus, Germany, France, (E.U.) and Israel, then you begin to realize that what and how Turkey was perceived by its allies has dramatically changed in the past decade. Sadly and for internal political use of the current issue the current regime in Turkey is announcing military threat against Cyprus and Israel knowing full well that Greece would be drawn into a war. Is turkey playing with the big boys, sure she is, i simply hope that she has studied history as history has shown that there are two particular nations you do not go head to head with and she has simply done so or its getting to the point that the irritating fly on the wall needs to be squashed once and for all. The flotilla incident was just a warning as to what extent one of those two nations are ready and capable of doing while dealing with international diplomatic reprisals.

From yesterday but I don't know the credibility of the website... Edit : after looking around the website in question it seems it's legit.

Flash: Russian submarine sail, this time to protect Cyprus!

And while the situation is worsening in the Mediterranean, the Great Island to pass perhaps the most critical hours after 1974 and Turkey continued to step up its threats and download more and more warships within walking distance of Paphos, Russia rushed to the aid of !

This time, fly in a Russian submarine with missiles from Moscow, and has not been elucidated yet, although it is conventional or nuclear (!) At the same time scenes have given all appropriate assurances from Russia to provide security in Cyprus ...

was bound to happen with Turkey supporting Muslim Brotherhood in Syria.Threatening Syria is tantamount to threatening Russia

Well it's more complicated than that. Russia gave money to Cyprus... in exchange for them to do oil exploration around Cyprus later.

Russia doesn't want to lose their investment. And they never liked Turkey much. Also this :
Russian spy ring suspect Christopher Metsos believed to have fled Cyprus

A man believed to be one of Russia's most capable agents, arrested in Cyprus this week as a suspect in the spy ring, has almost certainly fled the island, the justice minister, Loucas Louca, said..

Less than 72 hours after he was last seen on Cyprus, speculation is mounting that Christopher Metsos, the alleged paymaster of a Russian network operating under deep cover in the US, was allowed to "disappear" by a government which caved in to pressure from Russia.

Russia owes Cyprus a favor.

Russia does not need oil .Russia has the largest oil reserves in the world. They hide their true reserves which are there in siberia. This is what a former Tatneft executive told me in 2005. and more than 700 tcm of natural gas ,that to conventional.

The reason is Syrian destabilization my friend. Turkey is supporting muslim brotherhood in syria and thus threatening the russian naval base in syria. In the past Turkey and Russia had been cosying up too much. But with this support of muslim brotherhood ,russians regard the turk NATO israel split as a red herring.

Which is why they have sent a nuclear submarine into Cyprus waters and certain reports suggests that it carries some heavy nuclear firepower.

Yeah that too...

More news :
Turkey, Northern Cyprus sign exploration agreement

Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, making good on earlier threats, has signed an agreement with Dervis Eroglu, president of the breakaway Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), to explore for oil and natural gas offshore in the eastern Mediterranean.

Big escalation there.

Turkey ready to begin hydrocarbon exploration in Northern Cyprus

Turkish research vessel Piri Reis has arrived to its destination on the shelf of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus to begin the work on the exploration of hydrocarbons, Trend reports referring to the agency "Anadolu ".

"Attack on Noble Energy equals attack on US"

US Jewish leader Richard Stone sees dire consequences of an attack by Turkey on the Noble Energy rig drilling in Cypriot waters.

Not that this guy has any power.

Lol? Two nations you don't go against? Israel and Greece? You mean just 1 nation you dont go against...Israel. Greece hasnt seen military power since the Persian War and the Peloponesian War. It's been 2300+ years since greece has had anything that could be called military might and that was the Spartans who were basically the ancient world's version of special forces. No, don't lump Greece with Israel. This little alliance Israel made with Greece, they know damn well the greeks have no power now. The reason Israel allied with Greece is to give them a reason to attack Turkey.

I'm pretty sure he meant Israel and USA (American Company involved).
Greece may not be a powerhouse, but they fight ferociously when need to.
See here and here
Which also led to praise about the Greek resistance.

Yes it was WWII but no other balkan nation played as big a role in delaying Axis plans and screwing up their timetable for operation Barbarossa that led to the Nazi defeat in Russia.

Back on topic though, I'm not surprised to see Russia get involved, wherever there's natural gas potential, there's Russian interest, like the Arctic, and now Cyprus.

Highly unlikely. It does annoy me when posters will say something like the above, add the prefix "some reports" and then not even link to one of these "some", which makes me think that you're really just making it up for dramatic affect.

Russia would not deploy nukes in a minor border spat between Cyrprus and Turkey. A nuclear attack on Turkey (NATO member) would end up with the nuking of Russia itself, then the Western world and we'd all be dead. Not to mention it's overkill.

The sub deployed, if such a thing has happened at all, is most likely an attack submarine which would be more use against the surface ships of the Turkish Navy than an SSBN.

K-295 Samara from the Northern fleet is believed to be one of the two nuclear vessels deployed and has 12 RK-55 long range cruise missiles which are believed to contain tactical nukes. Check Komsomolskaya Pravda.

Yes, you will be fine....

This is just a diplomatic issue that will eventually blow over. I highly doubt this will come to any more than dodgems at Sea, like the "Cod Wars" between Iceland the UK.

She could be armed with a billion nukes and it wouldn't change what I have said..

Far too much fear-mongering around these parts. Lets try and remain level headed.

Again though, there is still no source for this..

K-295 is an Akula class, so its an SSN, not an SSBN like I said.

Null and void!

You can not sign deals with made up countries

SSN: Nuclear attack submarine - Same as the Traflagar, Astute or Los Angeles class. Used for hunting other submarines or surface vessels.

SSBN: Nucelar ballistic missile submarine - Same as the Vanguard or Typhoon class. Used for turning millions into radioactive dust and eating up huge amounts of defence budgets.

Also, the K-295 is part of the Russian Pacific Fleet basied in Kamchatka.

It would be very odd for it to be deployed to the Med and Cyprus, which is why I was after links or some other proof of such.
