The coppers do not have the authority to pass judgment on laws and decide which are good or bad. There is a law that was being broken and that's why they were arrested. They knew that when they did it. Plainly the law needs to be changed and this is the way the group decided to do it.

We are wrong to say that cops are against feeding hungry people. Their only concern is LAW enforcement.

Are you serious? REALLY?

Of course people have the right to question authority, when people decide to blindly follow unjust laws then liberty dies. I guess some of you are ready to blindly follow the puppet masters to your death.

That law is utterly stupid, but the group feeding them is also utterly stupid. If their goal truly was to feed these people, they wouldn't do it for two lousy meals, and they wouldn't make it common knowledge which DAYS they are doing it. It's a media circus. Of course they are going to be arrested. And I think they knew this.

There are churches and other facilities that feed families a week of food at at time. If they are allowed to do this only twice a month, organize and get food baskets that last for TWO WEEKS, and hand THOSE out to the families there. Problem solved. Or find another way to legally accomplish what they say they really want to do. They are not accomplishing much with one breakfast and one dinner a week. They could be so much more effective.

There was a point where Food not Bombs had to make a choice between being productive and helpful, or becoming a martyr. They chose the latter. They could have regrouped, done it better, AND made an effort to show the injustice of trying to "hide" the problem of poverty, as Orlando is trying to do. A pity for them, and for those they were supposedly trying to help.

Uh huh.

Until you have a problem - call the cops - and no one shows up.

Then you'll be screaming the cops aren't doing their job.

Isn't this more to do with not having a permit for the park?

It's like a Fun Fair event or an Open Air Gig.... you need a permit to hold these events... i'm sure that if they opened their own backyard and had like a barbeque or something similar for the homeless and/or hungry they wouldn't get arrested over it as it's on their own property!!

How about Homeless shelters where people go to get food?

Still, i guess the cops could have just cautioned them on the spot and let them pack up and leave....

One other thing... those children didn't look homeless or hungry.

I have asked this before in similar threads, but have never received an answer.

I respect everyone's opinions, whether I agree with them or not. Everyone has the right to their point of view. So, I can at least say that I understand (or comprehend,) respect, and tolerate the opinions held by some that feeding the homeless creates dependency, encourages vagrancy, etc. even if I do not personally hold that view.

But my question is this: what would you propose be done in the case of those who are homeless, hungry, and without other recourse (i.e. insufficient public aid, shelters are full up, they can't get a job, they suffer from ineligibility, or what have you)? What would your solution, personally, be in those instances where the only alternative is for them to rely on charity? Let them sink or swim? Or lend a hand if able?

Hope you're joking because People like me don't call the cops....I'm the type that gets arrested by them and not because I'm a criminal. It's because unlike you and most others, I don't fear threats and am not intimidated by anyone or their actions. I deal with situations as they come as no 2 are alike.

You on the other hand are one of those who practices your freedoms but when someone confronts you regarding it, you are the frist to call the scum police.

Fact is if your gonna practice your freedoms, understand that there are those in the world who play by natures laws not manmade laws. So be cautious when you let your emotions supescede your intelligence because to the wrong people, come unwanted consequences in wghich you will regret the reality of you decisions.

Problem is that you and many like you think all men/women are created equal when it's the furthest thing from reality.

Oh that's mature. The vigilante syndrome.

People like me? You mean like someone who lives in Arizona and is a member of the NRA?

I am not intimidated. I am a part of a society.

I couldn't watch the video because I am at work, however...
Many cities have municipal rules about feeding homeless in parks or giving beggars money. I don't have a problem with feeding the hungry etc.. But there are programs set up for the homeless to get food and money, without panhandling etc.

We have meters in our town on our streets that ask for the spare change for the homeless. The money goes to the homeless shelter to set up 24 hr soup kitchens. These municipal rules were set up because families were afraid to go to parks, or walk in certain areas, because of the homeless panhandlers. The only way to alleviate the problem without hurting anyone is to discourage feeding, or giving money in these areas, by making it against the law.

It is a law the people asked for, because of their fear of these people. It's funny, you live in a country that when you complain and ask for laws you get them. But when they are enforced you scream the "fight the system".

I don't think you truly know WHAT you want.

Want to feed the homeless, donate to food banks, soup kitchens etc. There are programs set up in every city in North America for that sort of thing.

Who said anything about vigilante? I deal with my own problems is the point I was making. I don't call police. People can't even physically defend themselves anymore w/out being arrested, so I don't know where you come up with vigilante.

No. people "who are aren't intimidated"

As far as being a member of the NRA, what does that mean? Nothing. Do you walk around with a rifle everywhere you go? No you're talking fantasy. Just because you're not intimidated doesn't protect you from anything. As a matter of fact it may do just the opposite. It may put you in an unwanted situation you can't handle because you're "not intimidated".

I'm not trying to sound like a tough guy or belittle you. As a matter of fact it's just the opposite. Trying to point out the fact "from my experiences" that many people are ruthless, devious and evil and don't care about threats of someone calling cops. As a matter of fact the cops only come to put people's bodies in a bag and investigate the crime. Honestly, 99% of the times police don't stop crimes but practice solving them.

Reality is reality. People and situations are way different in NY than Arizona but there's evil people everywhere. Not telling you to be intimidated but since no 2 situations are the same, the reaction to every single one comes with different outcomes. I see women in guys faces mouthing off like they can handle a physical confrontation when it's the furthest thing from the truth. When they do get their teeth kicked in, they'll realize that they should watch who they mouth offf to in such a violant manner.

Again the point I'm trying to make is not that I support violence but reality is there's a pecking order and people don't know their places.

Everyone thinks their the ALPHA until smashed to the pavement and if fortunate enough to be alive want to cry victim to the police when it's they themseves who put themselves in their current prediciments.

The vigilante syndrome. Hah. He was saying some people can handle themselves and dont need the cops. I can handle myself and protect myself way better than half these out of shape unfit coppers. Its a shame how unfit most of them are its a by product of getting a tazer and not having the need for hands on altercations as much.

The only reason people have to call the cops is because they can not take the law into their own hands or be charged themselves. They have no choice but to call the cops. I dont understand how you conveniently ignore that point.

Of course from reading your posts if congress passed a law you could be shot for jay walking you would go right along with it and tell people to change the law by voting while jay walkers were being shot at.

You are part of the reason this country will never change. I cant personal attack so ill say this... Boot lickers, butt kissers, and people who dont care how other people are being treated as long as they have their American Idle and crappy reality TV shows are the reason this country will never change. People will not stand together when they see injustice. They are of the self serve mindset as long as it doesn't effect me I don't care if its wrong or right.

Really? Corrupt or not - - that is how our country is run. And when people unite together to change laws - - it is effective.

This law is probably because there are more people who want it then don't.

I know Santa Monica CA tried to accommodate and leave the homeless alone. But they became so aggressive - - laws had to be made to keep them out of the heavier foot traffic areas. Which sounds similar to this area.

One time when I was in Santa Monica a teen girl became very pushy begging me for money. I told her "I'm sorry - but I only have a $10 bill". She grabbed me by the arm and tried to drag me into a store so I could make change.

My friend carries McDonald "meal books" (I think they're cards now) to give to the homeless. That way he feels they have to use them to actually eat.

Since I lean socialist - - I definitely support there should be places the homeless can get relief and at least a bowl of soup.

But I'm also realistic - - I'm not going to knee-jerk an emotional reaction to a situation I don't have full knowledge of.

I think the meal cards or books are a good idea.
No getting in trouble with the cops for giving away food and it being Orlando, McDonald's is probably just about everywhere.
It's not exactly a healthy meal..but it'll take the edge off of a growling tummy.

I don't need to have the attitude.

To you its realistic read your posts on the subjects. If its law its the law and the law rules all whether wrong or right. If you feel the law is wrong go through proper procedures to get said law changed no matter what the law is..

Cant have it both ways dont doublespeak.

I don't mean to change the subject, but this is the 3rd thread on this very same subject in a little over a week. In THIS part of Arizona that's called beating a dead horse (sorry PETA
) I understand that in Scottsdale they have a job to do and they let this sort of thing happen for the sake of fresh content, and I understand and appreciate that, but it really does nothing to help get to the bottom of the issue.

After all this time, the only thing that has gotten accomplished is that we know who among us stands on what side of the fence, that neither side is budging no matter how much sense one side makes, and people on the same side high-five each other when they agree with each other. I'm hard pressed to see any real mature discussion about this subject anymore. I don't know, maybe people like running around confused, blind and stroking themselves like some twisted circle-jerk surrounded by fun-house mirrors.

Let me tidy all this up for you people:

The Food Not Bombs organization cares as much about homeless people as they care about your mother.

The only way any of this is related to "homeless people" is because that catch phrase is inserted into the text of the press release.

The cops in this case are glorified baby sitters taking the unruly children back to their mommies for a good spanking and a dunce-hat-wearing session in the corner of a dank, dark basement.

I know I'm an experienced contributor here and that I should be setting an example ( and I usually do, you guys know that), but my cockles are really in a snit right now about this because once upon a time I used to be homeless and hungry. I know what its like. I've seen and known the good and the bad people out there that are still in that same place in the richest country in the world. You've got the families that don't deserve that way of life. Kids look to their parents and ask them what went wrong, but the parents can't look them in eye because they just don't have the answers. You've got violent crack heads and heroin junkies that fully deserve where they're at. Then there are the one's who you don't really know if they're good, bad, or somewhere in-between. All you know is that they will ever fit in with this society again. If you don't know where they went wrong, how can you help 'em make it right, you know? These numbers are only growing people, and it's really sad f**ked up situation. This is the reality that you are not going to see in any news stories any time soon

But all I see here is that people are crying because some "good natured hippie types" are trying to feed the poor, starving homeless people and those big, bad, mean jack-booted thugs came straight out of "1984" and # on their birthday cake.

Shake your heads because your eyeballs are stuck people. WAKE UP !!!!!!

I live in the real world.

Is there anywhere in the real world - any country - that you'd be shot for jaywalking?

If you're going to present an analogy - - - try something within the parameters of realism.

Good well in my real world feeding anyone anywhere is not harming anybody. If you can provide ample evidence as to how feeding someone is harming someone or encroaching on someone else's rights ill be more than happy to listen. I would also like to know if I go to this park and im not homeless but someone gives me food or is handing out food to everyone not just the homeless are they arrested as well.

How many country's would you be arrested for feeding homeless.
