Speculation on Twitter ranges from technical problems to speculation of hacking (by everyone from people connected with Libya to Anonymous acting in solidarity with ukuncut, the unions and black bloc)...

I have to agree

or it could be an anomynmous DOS attack because of the bbc's biased reporting of the recent protests

Yeah...but the real question here is did the BBC announce the website was down, 30 minutes prior to it actually going down?

I don't believe all these rumours about the BBC website being down. There's nothing about it on the BBC website.

If its a hack then why not post something for all to see? That way they can get their point of view across. This way it could just be a server glitch.

I don't think so, which rules out widespread server maintenance

I'm hedging my bets on it being a anonymous denial of service attack

Hence why it is most likely a DOS attack, simply overload the websites with too much information and they automatically stop working, it's the simplest and easiest of internet hacks.

Wow there must be a very serious technical issue, otherwise it's really weird. I don't believe there can be such brilliant hackers able to silence the whole BBC...I am very curious. BBC not accessible also from NL

Just came back!
