There have been 2 or 3 really sharp, violent aftershocks in the last 15mins.

10.15am to 10.30am here in Christchurch.

Its a beautiful, sunny day, calm, so at least the weather is not hampering any cleanup efforts.

An incredible link to a live radio broadcast for the region was provided by another ATS member from New Zealand over on the Quake Watch 2010 thread.

Listening to live reports of a lot of destruction, bridges unstable and damaged, instructions on boiling water, a lot of sewage issues throughout the region. Also mention of concern because this quake was not along the major fault line, rather an offshoot of the one that they are believe might cause their 'Big one' some time. Casualty reports starting to come in. Live aftershock reports are rattling nerves there.

Also liquification in the eastern suburbs, sand volcanos etc

Sounds like sewege system breakdown in New Brighton may cause evacuation there

WTF is going on in NZ?? That kind of quake is unheard of in NZ. They are volcanic islands, but EQ's?? Nuts!!

[edit on 3-9-2010 by TortoiseKweek]

Ummm... the two are directly linked in most ways

The North Island where I come from is the more geologically active Island, hell Aucklands got something like 50 volcanic cones, used to look out of our houses living room window and see the biggest one out off the shore (and its only dormant), while the South Island I believe is the much more stable island, its older as well.

But we get EQ's all the time here, at least one 3.1-4 a week gets reported on Teletext.

So its in no way odd.

Yay for the NZ civil defense system and building codes
seems to have made quite a difference, from a complete disaster to a more manageable one.
