Sorry I haven't replied asala. I haven't been able to get hold of him.
I guess there are loads of public domain images etc however!

Off to bed now. It's early, but it beats sitting up and worrying when every car goes past!

Hi All -
Here's a link included in an email from my friend who lives in Christchurch.
She's hanging in there, sick of the rumbling of course but more disturbing (in her opinion) is the bare shelves at the market. Something she only thought she'd ever see in 'nightmares'.
It's the staples that are gone, like rice, pasta, beans - but she's all set with the rest - fresh stuff - thankfully!

link

Gotta love that woman! Which reminds me, time to send her some more chocolate!
I hope normal post is working!

Hope and strength and prayers to all of you in Christchurch!

peace

New Zealand seems to be in the toilet right now. Lets hope the North island doesnt get anyworse, then there would be even more casualties and fatalities. I've heard that theres now three new fault lines, the Darfield-Rolleston fault, lyttelton fault yet i havent heard of the location of the third, does anyone know?

This mornings double event was quite strange, reminded me alot of the 7.1 on saturday. Hope everyone is okay, any help needed just say.

Stay safe,

Semoro

aor,

That wasn't the cruise ship I was talking about.

There was another one this time it happened Sept. 8, 2010........ yesterday.

I wonder if there is a underwater volcano waking around your area. or if the quakes you are getting are causing these rouge waves.

Also I just read a member wasn't feeling well in the stomach that has meaning believe it or not I will see if I can find out what it might mean. How are the/your animals acting observe them and keep an eye on your skies for sundog type clouding.

I can only hope this ends for all of you but when I checked out that wonderful christchurch quake map that was posted it seems that they went down to the 2's and now are climbing back into the 4's.

My heart and soul is with you all my friends.

At least the risk of Bush Fires is low
(with all the rain)

Trying to be positive here.

My awe for Mother Nature has returned after 6 days of fearing her. I managed to "enjoy" the power of the boom that comes just before the house cracking noise/sway. We are both still on edge but feeling more feisty today than any other since the big one.

I am feeling better, too, which helps - slept a lot yesterday because of that. I think it was stress/shock.

Notice that Hanmer Springs had a wee one today 3.5...

No, it is the 2008 event, the cctv of which was released on September 8 2010. There is no report anywhere of this event you speak of in 2010.

Thanks for your thoughts

I put your 5+ aftershocks on my NZ EQ Tauhouanga blog. Might give a different perspective of where you are at in the scheme of things now compared to other major events we have had here If you want to look back on some other NZ earthquake events in the past and see whats ahead of you (maybe)
Not all major quakes have thousands of aftershocks, but most do

edit on 9-9-2010 by muzzy because: add word "major" (geez what is this the typing police? )

Lifting data off the geonet quakesearch page

so far after 6 days 8 hrs I have got ;
1 7.1Mw
10 between 5.005 and 5.575ML
71 between 4.029 and 4.879ML
254 between 3.003 and 3.998ML
69 between 2.353 to 2.996ML
Total 406

compare that with last years Dusky Sound quake which was a bit bigger at 7.6 Mw or 7.3ML depending who you believe, its been changed a dozen times since the event.

same time period 6 days 8hrs
1 7.6Mw
1 6.096ML
29 between 5.001 and 5.943ML
105 between 4.0 and 4.988ML
397 between 3.0 and 3.997ML
358 between 2.1 and 2.996ML
4 between 1.917 and 1.988ML
Total 895

30 days after
1 7.6Mw
1 6.096ML
34 between 5.001 and 5.943ML
148 between 4.0 and 4.988ML
397 between 3.0 and 3.997ML
634 between 3.0 and 3.997ML
681 between 2.007 and 2.988ML
5 between 1.917 and 1.988ML
Total 1901

The worst may be over, as you see the 4's and 5's tapered off to be replaced by more 3's and 2's. Of course these events at Dusky were more than 50% offshore and the ones that were onshore were in a really isolated area of the country.
My guess is that you are going to feel a lot of those 3's over the next month.

Thats the good news

The bad news is that 5's continued to hit after the first 6 days;
14 days later (2 of),
15th day,
18th day,
20th day, (2 of) one the 3rd biggest aftershock of the series at 5.852ML
32nd day,
40th day,
then there was a break of 5 months before the next 5 mag in that area.

Just playing with figures here, theres no guarantee this Darfield quake will have the same sequence at all, although both were strike-slip quakes, the geology of Canterbury is a bit different with postglacial alluvium, sand dune and gravel deposits where as the Dusky Sound area is solid Cambrian rock (mostly)

data.gns.cri.nz...

They have been saying this was a "complex" earthquake but from my amateur eyes it looks pretty well defined and "restrained" between the Rakaia and Waimak rivers (like moorfnz mentioned previously) and its not really a big area 61km x 73km

Nice work muzzy

It's been a lot quieter today and I've been feeling more calm, yet still I am unnerved by the rumble of traffic.

Hope everyone else is o.k. and beginning to reclaim their lives
