Yeah, it looks worse than day 4.
We've really made progress. Thank you BP.

I don't know but wouldn't you think that these ROV operators should know to keep a safe distance so that this sort of problem doesn't happen. I know it is hard to do that sometime but how long have they ben down there and have not had this happen before now. It may just be me but it sounds strange.

Are they finished? It looks just as furious coming out sideways from all around the cap. Success is when nothing else gets broken?

So what is the consensus here on why they removed the 'Tophat'?

Was it;

A) An ROV bumped into it, causing damage to a valve;

or

B) Strange fluids coming up the downpipe, prompting an investigation;

or

C) Major burp of gases venting from down below

I am as gleeful as possible considering the situation.
It is much better than 4 hours ago and much worse than 2 months ago so I will leave it at that.
Thanks to the boys and girls who were really there up top that got the Top Hat back on!
Regards,
Iwinder

Enterprise ROV seemed to get a good distance back for a good look after they put the Top Hat back on the BOP. I don't know if it was the angle of the ROVs camera but it looked like it is leaning pretty bad. Then the ROV goes right up next to the BOP and appears to attempt nudge it a couple of times. Maybe I was just seeing what I wanted to see but it appeared they were checking the stability of the thing. A submarine doesnt have enough force to determine that right?

Ya know I am a fraekin' noob here and I have the decency to read the WHOLE dang thread before I add to it. Wonder why so many others don't take the time to NOT be redundant.
Just saying this thread could prolly be condensed to half it's size if folks would have read it before they posted.
It is frustrating to have to read back over two pages of what was covered already and to have to sift through the repetitious posts to get to new info.
Off topic? yup
should it be deleted? maybe not
Peace ATS.

They simply fixed what they broker earlier...

Though, maybe that was a ploy to change something on the top hat....

B and C.

I dunno, but I think BP needs a new cap or better pumps.

Your survey is incomplete...

D) TPTB needed to release more oil to stay on schedule.

Well of course oil is blowing out all underneath. Just look at that huge chunk out of the side of the top lip from earlier pics today (which I keep saying was the result of this recent ROV accident). If I were a fly on the wall, I am guessing they are discussing whether to leave it there and leaking like holy hell or to try and smooth that top surface out somehow and then re-seat it. The problem though, is they would be down to the flange and they might then need to re-engineer the tophat accordingly.

that is the problem with a lot of the 'internet generation'

with the advent of 'tl;dr'

if it's more than a paragraph you can bet they won't read it. Hell look at your social sites just proves if it's more than a couple sentences noone reads it much. Just a small few.

the popularity of facebook updates/myspace/twitter proves that.

quite sad this new internet generation is become illiterate unless you only write 2 lines and toss a 'meme' and couple wtf's in for good measure

just shows the level of their intelligence, but you are right this thread most the posts have been answered over and over, and the same questions asked over and over.

it's gotten amusing really

You know there has been reports of the BOP and the whole thing leaning not just the tophat. I am glad to see it on there,but I do have one question was this removing and putting it back on just to see what is really going on and now hey are just trying to buy time before the inevitable happens? I wonder if they found something from the oil that is being caught that made them remove the tophat to get a better look as to what is coming up from that well. I don't know, but it is possible they found what they were looking for and decided to replace the tophat.

Could they of done it on purpose? This is the info they list.

"For the first 12 hours on June 23 (midnight to noon), approximately 5,500 barrels of oil were collected and approximately 4,625 barrels of oil and 19.7 million cubic feet of natural gas were flared.

• On June 22, total oil recovered was approx. 27,090 barrels:

approx. 16,665 barrels of oil were collected,
approx. 10,425 barrels of oil were flared,
and approx. 54.4 million cubic feet of natural gas were flared.

The next update will be provided at 9:00am CDT on June 24, 2010.

Does "Flared" mean burning of? Why is it being burned and not collected?
