When I try to remote feel it, it feels velvety. I also have the idea that there are tiny grooves in the metal. I don't think they were able to open it, sort like a metal clam.

Whether that thing was buried 10.000 years ago or more recent, this is very very interesting!

And as a further addition, if this this really WAS USED as a space-beacon
antenna for satellite communications/geo-locationing then any radio-waves
it emits would be in the 5 to 35 GHZ range which really ain't all that great

Metallurgically, I suspect that in the 70's & 80's the Soviets were more than
capable of creating composite Metallic Glass Matrix materials as these
were discovered in the 60's for space applications. Today that type
of material is fairly common in aerospace engineering for engine parts
and exhaust nozzles. We also use them in expensive diving gear at
crushing depths & pressures over 30,000 PSI where stainless/high carbon
nickel/cobalt alloy steels max out at 25,000 PSI tensile strength.

If someone WAS to dig it up, one first needs to do a radiation survey,
and RF/Microwave emmissions survey from 100 MHZ to 35 GHZ
and even a gamma/xray emmissions survey and then dig in very
carefully with a bunny-suited/SCBA-equipped gang of technical engineers
who'll put that thing in a lead lined box to take back to a certified lab
to do a MRI/CAT scan of the device and then see if they can open it up
with a 70,000 PSI water-cutter.

Despite this thread having kind of come to an end, I still feel this topic is completely unexamined. We dont even know if someone currently lives at the address or not and if so what they think of this. I dont want to incite anyone to be a nuisance in that neighbourhood but we could at least find out what became of the case...

When I last time inspected the field (~year ago), I made this photo www.foto24.ee... and detected, that geiger-meter didnˇt showed nothing weird, neither EMF detector. Also there has been no report about something strange. So it`s pretty quiet down there. There are new residents living in the house and want nothing to hear about ufo-s

If someione is willing to translate, this is the most "interesting" summary, that Igor has given www.foto24.ee... . He was in the support crew of the diggers. So he was pretty clouse, when the action happened.

Some small details, wich have not been written about much:
During the "golden age" of Merivälja, there were numerous polergaist incidents in nearby neiborhood.
There were tozens of cats gathering around the sight in digging period.
The local recidens got non-stop headage.
I have seen some print-pictures from the basement of the house showing some weird figures.
SETI conference was held in Tallinn in 1981
what else...... a. some say, that there is a "gray-base" nearby. Called Deefa-base.

i hope this matter doesn't just fade away now, it's been fascinating reading with some particularly brilliant contributions from estonians and others with relevant expertise. it just feels unfinished, and i think we'd all love some more definitive conclusions - so what can we, the combined might of ats boarders, do to get to the bottom of this? Reminds me a bit too much of The Tommyknockers, but other than that, this might actually be one of the first legitimate buried extraterrestrial artifacts found.

Which was nothing more than a rip off of "Quatermas and the Pit", only nowhere near as scary, or as good.

Nigel Kneale, didn't believe in paranormal phenomenon but damn, the guy virtually invented so many of the common themes that have appeared, since the 50s. including "Reality TV" in his play. "The Sex Olympics".

The originator of the photo himself! Thanks for stopping by here. So this story was probably buried already more than a decade ago, right? It seems long forgotten and both people who lived there in the 80s are long dead and the object removed long ago.

Are we 20 years too late in asking questions?

Sky I have tried to search the internets and found no photo evidence, but the claims and stories are numerous. I don't doubt many of the stories veracity about seeing lights dancing through the bog, as "lights" can be attributed to geological conditions or even left-over electrical charges after a rainstorm. BTW thank you Toomas for the pics. To answer your above post we may be 20 years too late.

OK, sorry for the delay, but I've just now gotten around to translating the awesome and unbelieveable article from the magazine I linked some time ago (last Friday I think.)

I've added some comments here and there to explain my translations and other situations that might not be self-explanatory to natively English-speaking readers.

The story of the Stone of Merivälja starts around the years 1964-1965, in the area named Merivälja, Hõbekuuse Street. The owners of the real estate were Virgo Mitt and his wife Viivika. They were young people, the head of the household worked as a car mechanic. The plan was to build a drilled well behind the house. Machinery was ordered, at the beginning the digging was done with a drill mounted on a Willis (trans. - a Soviet knock-off of the early US jeeps used in WWII), however the device stopped working at a depth of 4-5 meters and could not move deeper. Heavier machinery was ordered to try again.

After approximately ten attempts at drilling it became clear that there was no way to penetrate. The cause for this was believed to be granite rocks hindering the progress. The topsoil around Merivälja consists of glacial drift clay (trans. moreensavi - either glacial drift soil or boulder clay). This is a region of limestone, boulder clay is a sediment following the ice age. And boulder clay often contains glacial granite boulders. The head of the household was guessing that the granite boulders were situated around the perimeter of the estate and that he could not continue drilling. He came to an arrangement with a neighbor to dig the well on the border of the two pieces of land. They were able to dig down to a depth of 7 meters, then the soil became hard and dry. The man thought that all the places were filled with stones. He got a pneumatic hammer/riveter and after a few tries there was a loud cracking sound and something broke. And surprise-surprise, splinters started coming out of the ground. After digging for another half meters, the water was reached. The head of the household was satisified, he finished laying the support structure for the well and considered the job finished.

Now there was time to ponder about the splinters. The splinters themselves were the same color as knives and forks: jewel-like, metallic, with a silver-like glossiness, with a high relative density (trans. erikaal). The substance was very hard, there were no marks of corrosion. Virgo clamped a piece between a bench clamp - it was hard, but brittle. He gave the material for research to TPI (trans. most likely an institute of sorts) and to other places. The answer was that it was some kind of technological material. This was the end of 1960s. The geologists theorized that the Becker factories manufactured some kind of a special alloy and that maybe the Germans did something like that.

Heading - The years 1982-1983

Enn Parve, who lived in Pääsküla was one of the forefathers of Soviet Union's radio electronics. The commuted with Hint and Altmere, who were working on AU etc (trans. I have no idea what AU is). There, in the Desintegrator, they worked with various experiments. For example, they transferred bacteria onto stones and the bacteria affected the relative density of the stones. These experiments were partially controlled by the GRU (military espionage).

Parve used his connections to get some splinters of the stone to Moscow, Kiev and to a location near Moscow, to the Ministry of Defense. Soon there was a reply: immediately establish a coverup of the dig site, replace the findings with some bogus story of archeological findings of ancient Estonians whatnot. The president of our Academy of Sciences received a letter that gave the order to start the investigation into object M.

In 1984 I was called upon and offered a chance to take part in the dig. I was currently employed within the militarized fire fighting unit and I was permitted to use colleagues in the dig. I was supplied with two phone numbers: should the dig reach the object, I was supposed to send the men away and make the call. Obviously I was anxious to find out what was hidden within the soil. Various rumors were circling in Estonia at the time. The attitude of the Ministry of Defense was very clear: the material that reached them could not have been forged/falsified on Earth! The material was supposedly thawed outside any field of gravity, not even the most skilled counterfeiter (trans. the author names Ostap Bender, who is a known literary character, a thief, shyster and whatnot) could have achieved something like that. The substance could have been manufactured only inside an orbital station. The chemical analysis showed that the "stone" contained approximately 40 components, mainly iron crystals, but the alloy/amalgam contained copper, zinc, lead, cobalt, vanadium... The manufacturing process had to have taken place within an engineered container. Because by the time cobalt and molybdenum start melting, copper and lead would long have vaporized. The alloy had to be melted by and engineer and the thawing process had to have happened outside of gravity.

The Russians arrived. The entire operation was supervised by general Vladimir Varganov, who was head of the special institute in Leningrad (trans. Leningrad - St. Petersburg). This was a man of such importance as to have KGB bodyguards accompany him when moving around. I would like to point out that the KGB is not to be blamed for all deadly sins, because the KGB was not involved with investigating UFOs, but was instead the sensory control apparatus of the Union (trans. propaganda). But the organizations comprised of people who were interested in what was really happening. Military espionage officers arrived, as well as technical counter-intelligence air force officers from Riga. I was responsible for excavating the stone. People responsible for measuring the dig site arrived from Minsk and Tomsk, all kinds of calibrations were used in the measurements, the elite of the measuring instruments was brought over here.

Heading - Base below, module on top

The theoretical model was that the stone of Merivälja is about 7-9 meters below ground, 17x22 meters in size, an elliptical or saucer-shaped object, on top of which there is a separated pilotable module - autonomic bomb-shaped object (2x4 meters). It was believed that therein lay two dead pilots and a number of interesting items.

Since this was a case of the utmost interest, it hastened the dig on the one hand, but on the other caused quite a lot of fear. The degree of secrecy involved lead me to question what was to happen to me and my colleagues. I knew, how some people were processed... (trans. the KGB/NKVD simply secretly killed people who knew too much or posed a threat; there were no investigations when people disappeared). I came up with the idea to pump the well dry, clean the site, perform a double analysis and send the samples once more to the laboratories. This would give at least a few weeks worth of time to think. The supervisors agreed to this.

Heading - The Era of Perestroika

(trans. Perestroika means restructuring). This is when the trouble started. We were utilizing various equipment from the fire-fighting and emergency station in Tallinn, the heads of state were informed, they were shocked to learn what was happening and they could not comprehend what was going on. Important operations were underway. The "White House" called, ordering to supply us with everything that was required. We were to receive manpower and technology, whatever was necessary. And at the same time: we were supposed to keep our mouths shut. We visited the dig site in between surveillance shifts, the condition was that we could not use the military, men in uniform were not allowed on the site, but since we were the militarized firefighters, we all wore uniforms... And the local population started talking about how the Soviet army is looking for a UFO over there. The wife of the household had heard that she has a "saucer" below the surface.

She was paid to keep quiet, given 500 rubles a month. But she realized that the men had money and therefore whatever was happening was exceedingly interesting. Friends visited for coffee, and like Estonians always, horror stories started circulating. Things got even more curious when poltergeists started visiting the house.
Poltergeist is one of the instances of environmental anomalies, combining any number of complicated physical processes, the most common of which are sounds, lights, shifts in temperature... And thus the shelves were falling down, objects were moving - both light and heavy etc.

The story reached the stage where during autumn 1984. and at the beginning of 1985 we were performing pumping and digging. Equipment was malfunctioning, communications were malfunctioning. It felt like the object was protected and we could not access it. Both spring and summer had already been spent... And then Moscow started suspecting the Estonians of fraud! This was around perestroika, 1986.

Heading - Energizing fails

Gorbachev visited Estonia and after that six men arrived from the Ministry of Defense - they began digging themselves. But even before that a special team visited. I was the supervisor of the shift within a PAZ bus - this was bus from headquarters and it was driven to the corner of Hõbekuuse street and Tuule. We were ordered to set the bus on an incline. The men were here with some kind of equipment.

The operator was Aleksander Dejev, who started probing the soil with half a laser and said something like 'start the engine and disengage the clutch, and when this thing from the ground starts coming up, drive down the slope. He also ordered the wife and daughter to leave the house. The husband Virgo was bedridden and Viivika (wife) asked what would happen to him. She was told to shut up, and that they were trying to start the thing inside the soil and raise it. If it succeeds, such processes would start that the husband would run out of the house himself. The wife was desperate, left the grounds, but I believe she made some kind of a circle and reentered the house via a back door.

We were in the bus with the motor running, waiting for 20 minutes, lights were blinking, the laser was aimed... Real science fiction. Lieutenat general walked across the grounds, so did the man with the laser, doing something, talking among themselves. After some time had passed, Dejev took off the headphones, laid down the laser and told Varganov that "It is energized, but won't start!" Imagine me and our people who are all doubting whether there is some kind of a saucer inside the ground or not - and some mystical party is attempting to energize soemthing seven meters deep... And that it is already energized, but won't start.

One of my colleagues from the University of Tartu put two cigarettes at once to his lips. He was breaking down and said that he'd never seen madness like this.

Well, these three posts are the story translated. I did not translate the beginning of the article because that is mainly general UFO discussion and does not really add anything to the story itself.

The to be continued slip at the end of the article is in fact there because there is supposedly a second part to this story. It was most likely printed in a later issue of the magazine and I haven't yet tracked it down. I will however try to do so and when I have it, I will translate and upload the story like this one.
