What a laugh.
If they want to spy on trash, just set up a 24 hour webcam on the Houses of Parliament.

Well put, I used to respect the American spirit for not taking the abuse and setting off to the new world, and then even fighting the British for independence... but sadly it seems to be fading fast.

PS the point i made to parallel the Poll tax is that after that Maggie had to quit, the PTB realized that any future taxes would have to be stealthy, so you tell me which class of citizen is likely to produce more household waste.. the not so privileged dont eat out as much and have many people living under the one roof, do they not?

If they did it where i live i could finally get revenge on a number of people.

You have a neighbor the plays loud music at 3:00 in the morning.

All you will need is a hose to fill his can with water..

Or if they are like the trash bins where i live and all look alike just play musical trash bin at 3:00 in the morning and move each trash bin down one house.

That would play havoc with there RFID system.

You might end up with some single guy complaining about the high trash charges because he it getting billed for the family of 6 next door

Better start finding ways to recycle everything..

...then again ,they wouldn't need to go through trash to spy on people...

How about we read the article before we reply. Then we would know there was a lot more than weighing garbage being done with the data. Sounds good to me.

verging on off-topic but it must be said...

see we all do religiously in the UK because we are under the impression that it benefits the environment.. alas it turns out that it gets shipped to China for processing (cheap labor force) which probably doesn't make any sense from an energy conservation POV (see shipping there and back).

This is hilarious. Really. I cannot stop laughing

Come on, this is a trash story, and is not worthy of ATS, please guys, don't start flagging and starring this thread, let it die.
It is not a story about being spyed on, it is all about weighing your garbage. No big whoop.

edit to add: I noticed that there were 3 flags when I posted. 3 posts and 3 flags. I didn't flag. Now there are 5 flags. Are you people really buying into this bunk? Or just flagging to flag?

Yes let's just turn a blind eye to big brother. They can do no wrong.

Think about this. . . next it will be a chip in your toilet paper counting your squares flushed. Or in your tires counting your mileage and tracking you everywhere you are. Or how about in your TV monitering your watching habits. . . OH wait they already do that.

Yes let us not care about anything big brother does. We have already turned a blind eye to long and things are falling apart. You let big brother have an inch and big brother takes a mile.

Just ask the little girls who got HPV vaccines against their and their parents wishes.

Yes everone move along nothing to see here
. I wouldn't normaly even suspect it but, are you a disinfo agent? lol how could possibly think any more surveilance of anykind by the man could be good.

The article covers two aspects, one of weighing which is geared towards the chips, the other aspect is a dumpster diving exercise conducted on 100 bins in 2008. To be honest an acquaintance once told me that some bin collectors make it a habit of diving through trash, and that it was surprising what you could find.

From TFA

'Any use of microchips is a local authority decision - some councils use them to monitor levels of waste. This is not about spying on people or fining them.' However, in 2008 nearly 100 councils ran investigations into the contents of their residents' bins, in some cases to check on what rubbish they dump and in others to try to obtain information on their incomes and lifestyles.

No you are correct it should be worrying, just add the excerpt from the bottom of the article so that peoples attention is drawn to the fact that they were checking levels of income. At best people may be inclined to shred (if they were not beforehand) their receipts and bank statements.

knowing some US ATS members, they may have receipts for AMMO ;-)

Mmmm

First they Chipped the Beasts & Pets,
And I did not speak out Because I was not an Animal,

Then they came and probed the bins,
And I did not speak out Because I was not a bin.

Then they came for the Prisoners & Terrositst's,
And I did not speak out Because I was not an terrorist & lawabiding,

Then they came and injected them in the Children & Sick,
And I did not speak out Because I was well and not an child,

Then they came to give me my barcode,
And there was no one not with the "mark" left To speak out for me

Original "First They Came" Pastor Niemolli

I know one thing I bet they are very very confused by my stats lol.

But thats a whole other thread.

Kind Regards,

Elf

I don't get it,

residents each have usually one bin that is collected by the council once every week. Whether that bin is full or half empty, it's still only one bin.

So those who line their bin with lead are going to pay more than those who add only feathers. Doesn't make sence.

that option wont work as the tags seem to be programmed with the owners house address, so the likely hood is that your neighbor will think his partner/friend/significant other put trash in the bin and will just add to the weight registered under your address.

Also looking at the manufacturers site one notes that the reading is done by the lifting arm of the truck. One ponders why the chips are made read write though.

BinChips

ok enough trash talk thanks to the OP for pointing it out.

If he hollers, tax him more,
Tax him until he's good and sore.
Tax his coffin, tax his grave,
Tax the sod in which he lays.

Put these words upon his tomb,
"Taxes drove me to my doom!"
And when he's gone, we won't relax,
We'll still be after the inheritance tax.

Im going to be the fly in the ointment here

Councils who have already invested in the SGB type bins are the only ones able to put this into action

many more coucils including my own are still using bag collection - why? because its cheaper.

The SGB Sulo type bins require specialist vehicles - costs money I dont know know but in 1991 it was a huge amount

add to that the cost of the so called micro chip tech - more money

so most councils chose what we call gate collection - oh and for the record SGB systems meant an average of 33 kilos more waste per household so the councils her in the UK hated the idea.

yeah im a debunker - but hell I worked for the UKs largest waste contractor and was involved in the pilot thoughts on this back in 1991

This is little more than scaremongering - you know why ? because during the tests we ran most of our operatives could not be bothered to use the tech to make it work.

Do you know how many councils do or do not have SGB bins ? Which councils that have SGB bins use external companies to collect the refuse ?

If the use of SGB bins leads to more rubbish, these bins can be chiped, your a private comany collecting the revenue $$$$$$$ Another conn

I would be interested in those stats... ?

This is crazy and must end NOW!

Flytipping will increase, but worse than that....some people (especially those in appartments and shared properties) will try to put their rubbish in other peoples bins and others will be their victims.

THEN...councils will introduce bins that have locks on them which would be available at the cost of manufacture, supply, administatiton etc etc to the user.

££££££££££

The only REAL problem is the rubbish in the councils who are no more than do-gooders, jobsworths and pen pushers who get satisfaction from using rediculous regulations and powers they've been given to satisfy their own inadequate lives.

What a mess!

If you don't care about the whole deal of government invading privacy, which this is a minor invasion but an invasion onetheless. Then why don't you look at it from the waste of time and tax money involved?

Think about it, first you need the chips, but hey they're not expensive. Then you need the chip readers, again not a massive expense. However you now need a database to store all of this data, that means computer hardware, that needs an engineer, and custom software, that needs a programmer. Then you need people to monitor and maintain the hardware and software.

On top of this you need peopel to analyse the data and create reports, more than likely these will be broken down per town and county, averages taken etc etc. All of this adds up to man hours, each hour of which has to be funded out of our taxes.

Finally as someone else mentioned what about fly tipping? Fly tipping already costs councils hundreds of thousands a year! This will lead to more of it because the government plans to start charging those who throw out to much.

So there you go, clear, not paranoid reasons that this is a bad idea.
